- mycatsboots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why do we care if anyone wire taps anymore, apparently it isn't against the law.
- MyNameIsFred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There are many misconceptions regarding the Amish. They do use phones, with special restrictions. My understanding is that modern technology is limited, but allowed. See http://www.amishnews.com/amisharticles/amishtelephones.htm

Amish teenagers can use "modern" things during a brief period of their life. - Wamzlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My amish neighbors just come and knock on the door if they want to use the phone.
- mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Technology & the Amish
The Amish are averse to any technology which they feel weakens the family structure. The conveniences that the rest of us take for granted such as electricity, television, automobiles, telephones and tractors are considered to be a temptation that could cause vanity, create inequality, or lead the Amish away from their close-knit community and, as such, are not encouraged or accepted in most orders. Most Amish cultivate their fields with horse-drawn machinery, live in houses without electricity, and get around in horse-drawn buggies. It is common for Amish communities to allow the use of telephones, but they do not allow them in the home. Instead, several Amish families will share a telephone housed in a wooden shanty in a nearby location. Electricity is sometimes used in certain situations, such as electric fences for cattle, flashing electric lights on buggies, and heating homes. Windmills are often used as a source of naturally generated electric power in such instances. It is also not unusual to see Amish using such 20th-century technologies as inline skates, disposable diapers, cell phones and gas barbecue grills, because they are not specifically prohibited by the Ordnung.
Technology is one of the areas where you will see the greatest differences between Amish orders. The Swartzentruber and Andy Weaver Amish are ultraconservative in their use of technology - the Swartzentruber, for example, do not even allow the use of battery lights. Old Order Amish have little use for modern technology, but are allowed to ride in motorized vehicles including planes and automobiles, though they are not allowed to own them. The New Order Amish permit the use of electricity, ownership of automobiles, modern farming machines, and telephones in the home. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dixie cup + extra long string= amish wiretapper.

loleth. - VaderHader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Why do they give the poor kid's street address?"
More importantly, how can they give his NAME and address if he's a minor?? hmmm...something smells fishy here.... - sndchsr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amish hackers
what the ***** - luckyschop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1way back in the day when i rode the bus, the amish kiddies used to swap nintendo 64 games whilst playing their gameboys on the way home from school.
and don't let their barns fool you... i know of at least two near my house that actually house full length basketball courts.
what about those buggy things? there are several where i live that are trimmed in blacklights sportin' 2 10s in the back, no joke. they just go out and get trashed, get back in the buggy and whip the horse, and the horse runs straight home.
but their cooking is great - BotchaMcCoola, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I think the Lancaster Amish are more into money than the old ways. We were out there last summer. My sister-in-law got an Amish lady to pose with her in a picture even. She shops at the lady's store about every summer though. Still I like them very much.
- MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find it funny that this Amish kid in Wisconsin wiretapped his neighbor to talk to his Amish relatives in Indiana. Were they wiretapping someone on the Indiana end too?
- Arcotik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hey, Bush did it! So can he.
- Poolshark19, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i know what he did, he crossed the dixie cup lines between the houses...hes sneaky
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ok, the kid knew how to splice into a phone line, yet did NOT know about long distance charges? Please. And he knew enough to just stay quiet when the neighour picked up and wait for their extension to be hung up before continuing the conversation.
He knew full well what he was doing. Amish or not, he's a bad seed. He'll be performing buggy drive-by's and holding up the local co-op by next week. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The Amish tend to frown upon everything. They're Amish.
- supnah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I highly recommend that you all go rent "Devil's Playground." Netflix has it if you'renot being throttled too heavily. It will answer many questions about how there can be, say, Amish crystal meth addicts. Seriously.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next he will be buying a plane ticket to visit them... What are the Amish coming to?
- myster9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That isn't "wiretapping", but more along the lines of beige boxing.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if they're amish, why do they have a phone? I thought that was verbotten.
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His defense is that the Amish laws give him the inherent authority to wiretap others' phone calls.
- Barnstormer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My irony computer just overheated. I mean... if it was just any Amish it would be ironic,
but throw in the fact that it's a teenager and suddenly it's not. I can't imagine that the
Amish have found a cure for adolescence. - thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL:
>>> After admitting to the wiretapping, Vande Kolk drove the Bontragers at their request to the Langs' residence to apologize to them, according to the documents. - Zipko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Amish tend to frown upon this."
Actually, in this case they wouldn't. I think someone already mentioned it above, but when Amish kids become teenagers they're given the opportunity to leave the religion and experience the outside world. Then the idea is that when they get sick of it they revert back to being Amish. I live in southern Pennsylvania in the heart of Amish country, and one of the biggest drug problems we have in the area actually comes from Amish teens. For some reason a lot of them get into dealing hard drugs when given their freedom. - BotchaMcCoola, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Usually but not always. There are both liberal and conservative segments of both the Amish and Mennonits groups - according a booklet I read from a friend whose father was Amish..
- killerwombat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is the sign of the end of the world, when the Amish are screwing people over using technology, now there are truly no one we can trust
- dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Aye, English...'tis I, Jebediah who hath tapped your phone. 'Tis also I who hath been tapping thine wife's ass in thine absence. We are a very liberal ordinum.
- Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Amish tend to frown upon this."
+digg for humor :) - Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
i just shot mountain dew on my keyboard :( - n4cr2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of that Simpson's episode where marge hires some Amish people to rebuild Bart's tree house. And Homer says something like "who know's more about electricity than the Amish."
- cyberscape2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Amish don't outlaw phones. It all depends on the sect. Usually, they keep them outside in a separate building or booth.
I live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and I have Amish neighbors who own cell phones and automatic weapons. It's not so strange as it sounds. - riddlebox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The amish can have phones out in their barns. Just not in the house. I am from Indiana, and my grand ma "drives" the amish where they want to go. So I have been around them enough to know things about them. When they turn a certain age they are allowed to go out and live a modern life...to decide if they want to keep their faith like the amish. Where they are allowed to drink, party, and everying. There is also another branch of Amish called miniknight (not sure of spelling)
- 4tygames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg for the awesome last sentence in the description.
- oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so how/where did an amish guy learn to beigebox anyway???
they should check him for a tone generator too, he might be making free payphone calls too.
this dude should be commended to come from a bunch luddites to being a phreak - intricate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh the irony...
- MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if the RIAA will send a lawsuit to one of those Amish households.
- ericmoritz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, it's not hard to tap a phone. I figured out how cut up the wires in a phone and attach a speaker and make a wire tap in elementry school. All it takes is a little tinkering to discover that you just have to connect two wires to a speaker and you hear a dial tone. My friend in elemetry school paid me $5 to make him one to listen in on his sister.
- sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's really nothing more anyone can add to make this any funnier. Wow.
- thomashallock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why do they give the poor kid's street address?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"For some reason a lot of them get into dealing hard drugs when given their freedom."
well that's what happens when your totally repressed your entire life, you're exposed to so much of the world you can't handle it, it's like sensory overload. allowing them that one short burst of life on the outside is a sly tactic which guantees they will blow out and come back to the amish for good, spouting about the horrors of the outside world. - sstidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An Amish phreaker? Who would have thought. I doubt this guy will return to the Amish lifestyle after his Rumspringa.
- Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The amish are not all technologically ignorant. He probably got info from a non-amish friend on tapping and put it to use.
"James, come here! I recieved a letter today from an organization who calls themselves the RIAA. They say that you have stolen music from a Mr... Sean Puffy Colmes. Be truthful, did ye take Mr. Colmes music? Then we shall drive to his residence and apologize this instant!" - DealCracker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I grew up in an area with a large Amish population. They have modernized quite alot since I was a kid. Their buggies used to be open with only a lantern for lighting. I nearly ran over more than one at night. Now they have windshields and electric lights. It's not uncommon to see them with cell phones. Some even have computers in their businesses. I doubt too many are into beige-boxing (he was not "wiretapping") though.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I thought that was verbotten." Nope... you can have an amish-made payphone in the outhouse.
Question: How did this kid _learn_ to wiretap?
Japan overtook us with technology, Korea did too. China is about to overtake us... next... the amish?
*shudders* that might be a reason for me to become amish.
... and thier relatives had a phone? what happened to shunning? - osuadh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some amish people have phones, not just the crazy wild amish teens. I lived across the street from amish people who had a phone in their front yard in a little outhouse like building. Like five families all used the same phone. I'm actually quite surprised, though, that an amish kid could figure out how to "wiretap" his neighbor, considering how technologically illiterate all the amish people I ever met were.
- kylebrothert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not diggworthy at all..
- spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now it would have been a good story if, when they went to the shed to seize the phone they found a laptop using another neighbors wireless... that would be news worthy...
- sygyzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The family asked the cop for a ride (in his car presumably) to the neighbors so they could apologize. Isn't using a motor vehicle totally against their beliefs?
- gdrewpowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What's next? Wet bonnet contests? Churning butter naked? A buttermilk kegger? "Man, this milk is kicking my ass!"
P.S. Why isn't kegger in the spell check? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How can he wiretap with no phones allowed. oh shiat he broke TWO amish rules "no father not the whip!"
