- celerityfm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30What we're doing here isn't about Steve Fossett but about improving search and rescue techniques. By assisting in this project you are helping to develop technology that could one day save YOUR life too.

- roastedbagel, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28This is one of those times where I really feel like I CAN help when someone is missing and it's posted on Digg, this rocks big time!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28Hey everyone digg this up more so we can get this on the front page and get this data sifted through as quick as possible by people.
- ire1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17They just updated it for this.
- rtz549, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Take a look at this plane in google earth:
38°28'55.67"N
119°24'18.15"W
(must have the new KML file to see it) - lastminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Google Earth KML with high res images from the search area:
http://s3.amazonaws.com/fossett/geoeye-color.kml - akatherder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11So if we have satellite images from over two weeks ago and the recently updated images, why not give access to large chunks of them so we can compare the pictures programatically?
That said, Mechanical Turk reminds me of turkey. - GizmoFreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Think about the advances in technology this guy has helped achieve. If there weren't fearless people like Steve in this world, flight, engine, and aerodynamic technologies would not be advanced as they are now. He has done a lot for the world, through his own personal life risking adventures. He is worth putting as lot of effort into finding.. I think anyway.
- lastminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Yes those images in the KML file are recently updated.
From SteveFossett.com:
"New satellite images are also enabling internet-based anaysis by individuals hoping to help. The project is an 'Amazon Mechanical Turk' based effort with recent images from GeoEye, supplier of many images to Google Earth." - orca94, on 10/10/2007, -16/+25You guys might consider me an ***** for this. But...
Why should the government and others be using so many resources to save a guy who has repeatedly put himself into dangerous situations for thrill seeking? I'm sure those resources could be better put to use helping/saving people that don't purposefully seek out engaging in activities they know will have a huge risk of putting them in danger. By the same token if someone attempts suicide, how much money should society spend on trying to save that guy every time.
That said I hope the guy is alright. - mbmatt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Another plane near this point: 38.481674,-119.405594
- Arbassin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8There is a small white plane if you look at these coordinates on the kml file in google earth: 38.48219,-119.40493
Maybe it's just a search plane but as I'm in France I can't sign up on the amazon thing to signal it. What do you guys think? - Ozzy73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8To make things easier, check out this script for greasemonkey
"TurkHelper for Steve Fossett"
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/12100 - BridgeBurner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Just finished looking through 100 images, flagged one. I'll do another 100 in a bit.
Those that are saying resources shouldn't be spent to find a man that takes a lot of risks in his life are heartless bastards, you should be ashamed. - js530, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6A VFR flight plan would do nothing in this case. A VFR flight plan does NOT mean radar coverage, its very unlikely he could even get radar services at the low altitude he was flying at in the middle of nowhere. The only thing a VFR flight plan guarantees is that search and rescue will be notified if you don't arrive within about an hour, if he could even get it opened in the air (his plane probably doesn't have an electrical system (ie. no radio), and Lockheed's privatization of FSS means ~30 min wait on the phone). He told people at the airport when he should be back, which is just as effective as a VFR flight plan.
- vhtrading, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It would have been nice if something like this would have been done for James Kim when he got lost a year ago.
- Warptaco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is probably nothing but.. On Google Earth, when you download the high res picture,
I was just lazily scanning around and I came by this dark patch on a mountain in coordinates
38.31.01.84N and 119.23.21.44W at elevation 2299m on the side of a mountain. It looks kind a
out of place. Like there had been a small fire. - lastminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Problem with the greasemonkey script. A captcha I got had several Ns in it. Each time I hit N it submitted... Now my account has been halted for 5 mins...
- cdnbambam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6When a plane disappears they search to they find it no matter who it is. You may not hear about it as much but they the search still happens.
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5no, that would be stupid.
- JamesTorrence, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I've been looking for him for hours. As far as I'm concerned, we can use as many Steve Fossetts in the world as possible. The guy is a perfect emblem of an un-wasted life.
On top of that, searching for a lost millionaire in the desert seems to have better odds for payout than those lotto tickets I was going to buy today. - HenvY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Oh right, so who fed you this 'classified informatin'? I can see why they trusted you.
- parasight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Because he might be dying and needs to be found? What does his money have to do with it? Just let him die or what point are you trying to make?
On a side note, this is a good example of using technology for the benefit of mankind. I hope this works out, and I hope to see more of these collaborative efforts. - lastminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5@ozzy73 that greasemonkey script makes it SO much faster! nice!
- lastminute, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5these captchas are getting annoying
- djAnakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Hence the reason why you have to download the new images that were taken within the last 5 days. Reading is good.
- Nothlit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Um, he's not in the tech industry. Nor was he on vacation. He is a world-record holding aviator who was scouting desert locations for an attempted land-speed record.
- conman16x, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Well it doesn't actually matter because each image is reviewed multiple times by different people, but making stupid comments at least makes you a jackass.
- hulahulahooper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+438°33'44.25"N
119°19'37.26"W
is it a bird.
no.
is it too big and in flight?
probably... - Track, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Here's the math:
Mechanical Turk thumbnail = 85 m x 85 m = 7225 m²
1 km² = 1,000 m x 1,000 m = 1,000,000 m²
1,000,000 m² / 7,225 m² = 138.4 thumbnails per km²
Avg HIT completion time = 5 seconds
138.4 thumbnails x 5 seconds = 11 minutes 30 seconds (or so)
Not a lot of time spent per person to put a serious dent in the search grid.
Let's assume the photos are current enough to be relevant... - cobrabyte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, this definitely does suck. You would think the Submit HIT button would be right next to the options but no such luck. Also, the CAPTCHA is a slight annoyance, as well.
- Alex2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Looks like a plane to me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes, usually the "word on the grapevine" and posts from "hackthegov" are extremely reliable sources of classified intelligence.
- shreela, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3mTurk is kind of like a 'job' site; mTurkers do small bits of work for small amounts of money that goes towards Amazon purchases. The 'employers' have to have their money available to pay for the jobs they post to the mTurkers. Just don't tell them your bank account number; I have an mTurk account and have Amazon 'money/credit' in it so I can buy stuff from them with my earnings, but as long as I don't choose to transfer my money to my bank account, or become an employER, then I don't have to put in my bank info.
PS: The Steve Fossett HITS ('jobs') pay $0 because they're voluntary. - dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Tell the rest of the lone gunmen to back away from the gasoline soaked bag.
- elipabst, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I could care less that he's a billionaire. I would do it if it was some random person's lost child or if this had been available when James Kim and his family went missing. I think the problem is that it's only useful for something like this, where you have a large object in relatively sparse terrain. Looking at a satellite/aerial photo isn't going to be much help if you're trying to find kidnapped children because you're only going to see the tops of everyone's head.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4What he's saying is that it probably won't save his life because he's not a thrill seeker. He's probably better off dedicating his time to, say, preventative health research. But since he's on Digg, he'll probably be giving free feedback to Apple.
- phredwolf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This interface is pretty good (already gone through 40 photos), but there's a lot of nothing in each photo, so I could just as easily do a square of 3x3 and go 9 at a time. Cool application. I figure I've searched over 400,000 square feet in the last 10 minutes.
- norsurfit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Greasemonkey script is great.
- patmakh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4crazy is right.
- avaloncourt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The information gives thanks to individuals and organizations for the satellite imagery. It's new imagery.
- Warptaco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3On the old google earth picture, this black smudge does not seem to be there.
It exist only on the new picture. - conman16x, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There is a link to download recently updated images of the search area. Another example of why people should actually CLICK on links before they comment on them.
- philz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Did he have a hoodie on?
- bitsyboffin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I signed up and participated just fine with my real details. I'm in New Zealand. That's not part of the US last time I looked.
- Ozzy73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can. Just make up your registration info. The being in the US part is needed only if you are working on Turk for money
- mrmulyani, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Given the terrain, my guess is that's a plane in flight.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Some people.
- oolatin79, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Fly to coordinates: 38 31'01.84"N, 119 23'21.44"W
They look pretty similar, it might just be the lighting -
