Measuring how popular your site is with people who are too dumb to distinguish real software from malware since 1996. - purrp, on 11/28/2008, -1/+65171 diggs, and no one seems to have any clue what they're actually digging.
Amazon is NOT SHUTTING DOWN ALEXA. All the comments about spyware are true, but irrelevant.
Amazon is NOT SHUTTING DOWN ALEXA WEB SEARCH. Even if they did, I don't know if anyone would really care or notice.
Amazon is shutting down WEB SERVICE ACCESS for developers to Alexa Web Search. This is even less significant than shutting down Alexa Web Search. - Chairboy, on 11/28/2008, -2/+28For the folks who think this is a bad thing, consider for a moment where the Alexa results come from: Spyware.
Alexa is one of those companies that has used various techniques over the years to install their spyware program that monitors where you go and uploads the data back to the mothership. This is how they figure website popularity, even though most people now know that it only measures the popularity of websites visited by people who have spyware installed.
I, for one, am fine with this. Don't reward a business model predicated on predatory practices against the perennial prey that their install base represent. - DirtyDiggDog, on 11/27/2008, -4/+27Yawn...
- drlha, on 11/28/2008, -2/+13Lack of Comments here shows how little anyone gives a ***** about this news.
- gnews, on 11/27/2008, -6/+15I'm loving the new Firefox plugin for Alexa's Traffic Rank (displaying a traffic rank bar in google search results).
- seldon452, on 11/28/2008, -0/+8wait, we are supposed to read the articles?
- rsHoratio, on 11/28/2008, -0/+7and to think, after reading the other comments, I thought I was the only one who read the article.
- SummerNight, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Biased, yes. But as a web developer, it was biased in my direction :(
- imbob, on 11/28/2008, -1/+7DELETE COOKIES! its ALEXA!!!
- jasdf, on 11/28/2008, -0/+6Yeah, the data is totally biased.
- Draakan, on 11/28/2008, -0/+5That was alot of p's at the end there. Almost thought it was Dr. Seuss.
- NathanCH, on 11/28/2008, -1/+6Shut down Alexa period. It's horribly inaccurate. Worst part is that people rely on it for website popularity. It only tracks your site if someone visits it with their malware toolbar installed
- nitesoIja, on 11/28/2008, -2/+6because you touch yourself at night
- cufford, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3The whole idea of measuring traffic to a site by how many of a particular kind of idiot, who actually installs the monitoring software in their browser, as having any relative meaning to a site's actual traffic is beyond lame.
And beyond that, hit counting a website is of no interest to anyone but the person running a site, and it's purely narcissistic. Any site that publishes something like "we got X visits last month" seriously needs to get a life.
I don't know if the online advertising world uses this ridiculously inaccurate data, like TV and Radio ratings, but to anyone else, it's pointless trivia that only serves the web administrator's ego.
Otherwise, who gives a ***** how many hits, or other trivial stat, a site gets. - Rikkochet, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3So apparently you are the only person (the author of the article included) that actually knows what DEPRECATED means.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Can I kiss your head?
- Chairboy, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2Preposterous!

- Jeffler, on 11/29/2008, -0/+2This is such a Whoos that the h at the end flew away to China
- SifuMoKung, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2What's an Alexa? I thought it was a boat from a Billy Joel song.
- douglasr007, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Good.
- RizzoFrank, on 11/28/2008, -2/+3Damn I just got in the top 100,000 rankings too.

- T1M4NT, on 11/28/2008, -3/+4Alexa was junk... thank god its going away.
- harris2004, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1How much did Amazon pay for Alexa? thats almost $250 Million in Amazon stocks going in the drain.
- frieddonuts, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I find your pervasive practice of prodigiously proclaiming p-words to predicate your pretentious personality.
- jakereilly, on 11/28/2008, -2/+2Yep, everything. And then Amazon is closing its entire story next February due to overseas competition.
- LordStandley, on 11/28/2008, -4/+4NO, NOT ALEXA!!!!!

- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Does this mean they shut down the web rankings?
- otrube, on 12/01/2008, -0/+0Is this due to the current economic conditions in the nation? To bad that Google is knocking competitors out of the search engine market.
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -7/+6You like, their vice chairman or something?
- searcade, on 11/28/2008, -2/+1Wait is alexa statistics shutting or the search only
- nesstheking1, on 11/28/2008, -2/+1womp womp
- MrAsparagus, on 11/28/2008, -8/+4Good. One less thing for them to fund. More profits.
