- LordBoozington, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Coolest table ever! I would love to have a few of these in my own house.
- jesusisapervert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@dbr_onix: It doesn't matter if people walked all over your table. It doesn't even have to be a table. If you watch the videos closely, you'll notice that the video is top-projected. Meaning there's a projector in the ceiling and that the "table" could be anything. It could even be projected onto your floor, which I hope people could walk over without breaking. ;)
I suspect that the way they detect motion is by an IR camera in the ceiling aswell. So there's no way people could damage it. Unless... maybe. If the party is so good that your guests are "tearing the roof down"? ;) - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yay. More things to manipulate by moving my appendages.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The Sony Metreon's (san francisco) had a similar installation for at least a year now. Fun toy for about 5 minutes.
- WorldGroove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Table? That technology should be applied to the whole dance floor.... and in different colors.... Now, that would be top tier.
- fullcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4freak out drunks? pubs are for drunks.. you mean freak out pill heads
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A few years ago I saw something similar on a webpage: A table with different shapes of light acted as a turn table, or an advanced mixer. A guy used his fingers to shape the, uhm, shapes, and by doing that he was changing -- among other things -- the pitch of the music playing. I've tried to find the page again, but no go. Anyone seen it and maybe have the link?
- insidesource, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Similar to Nintendo's "Floor Screen" showed at E3 2004
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6185946983584477029&q=nintendo+floor - zaren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He might be referring to AudioPad - http://www.jamespatten.com/audiopad/ - an MIT thing, no surprise :)
Several interesting tabletop audio interfaces can also be found here - http://www.iua.upf.es/mtg/reacTable/?related - Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No one commented on the fact this article used the word "Amazing".
- blindpyro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That would make for a great breakfast table.
"... Am I awake?" - dhuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2not to mention this is some pretty slick design/programming/algorithms/whatever. it looks AWESOME.
this is las vegas people, they do it right out there.
pretty cool if you ask me :D - iczman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Imagine this kind of interaction for our operating systems. I want to control my desktop minority report style!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well not everyone has seen it...but then we're not all as cool as you! right
- h4ppydotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the technology providers' website (linked from the Digg to http://www.freeset.ca/freeset/ ) there's an interesting titbit (once you find it):
---
How much will a project using this technology cost?
The global cost of a project using the Human Locator includes licensing, development, and hardware. Due to the range of possible uses, it can be anywhere from $5,000 to $500,000. Contact us for a free quote.
---
$5000 for one of those tables, or to turn my projector into a wall based interactive thingy, sounds like a steal. If they can really deliver at this price... of course, there's a BIG assumption I'm making that they could bring the cost right down if the install is fairly 'standard' and non-customised.
All I need to do now is find/steal $5000... - Tomos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uh... motion detection camera, wiring, professional to install it correctly.
Projector and software for $350, you're dreaming. - kdehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and stoned hippies as well.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.freeset.ca/hldemo_nightclub/club_fire_web.mov ... are you sure you want everyone randomly walking around on your new expensive table?
- Ben - combatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One did. Right above my first comment.
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's pong?
- mikal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zaran, yes, thank you, that is the one. Very very cool.
- CowboyMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It appears to be an image projected from above onto the table. So basically it's not that much different than the eye toy contraption Sony released a few years ago, which did quite similar things.
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this same technology used in my local mall as well. Little kids love to play on them all the time.
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so what would the cost be?
software= $50
Projector= $200-$300
Table=depends
overall its not that expensive.
well then we consider where the projector feed is coming from, it could be connected to your computer in the backround and you could probably do something interactive with your desktop (IE MOUSE) - wiz0rian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1woah, O want one so bad.
- Truegod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, these things have been around for a while now. I saw one in a Chicago movie theater about a year ago. Fun, but old.
- sparty1969, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love how everyone wants to be the first to say, "Yeah I saw this like 10,000 years ago".
Yeah yeah yeah......We know your Grandfather pioneered interactive table top bar displays back in the depression era using only a pinhole camera and a 100 watt light bulb.
In the words of the prophet Archie Bunker, “Stifle” - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"New technology"? I remember stuff like this being done on an Amiga 20 years ago. The graphic capability may have gotten more powerful, but it's not a new invention.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow this is similar to this thing:
http://www.digg.com/links/Multi-Input_Touch_Screen_Bar_
Check it out :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm shocked to see how many people haven't seen this technology.
I've seen displays like this in numerous amounts of public facilities, especially malls and movie theatres.
It's pretty cool to see projections that aren't strictly promotional though. - HydraulicToast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm curious to know what video they were playing.
- technozem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mikal : do you mean JazzMutant's Lemur ? http://www.jazzmutant.com/
- Waredgo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Very Cool.
This is something coming up pretty quickly. Look at Wii....the public is looking for ways to manipulate digital images physically. - moeq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great. Yet another place to plaster beer comercials.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This things are awesome...
- dabug911, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The tables in this case are actually huge blocks of marble or grannet (sp?), I forget which one, and you can dance on them all you want. The projectors shoot from the cieling and have a box attached to them that looks to shoot out a laser grid on the table that tells the computer where your hand is so it knows how to manipulate the visuals. Its really neat to play with. They also have projections on the top of the bar, so when you sit with your drink its sitting on top of projections. Of course they are top projected so if your hand goes over it does block the image.
Still really neat if you ever have a chance to visit Tabu. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This will make audio visualizations hundreds of times more interesting.
- LtDyson52, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Saw this at the Siggraph Convention, http://www.siggraph.org/ , like two or three years ago in LA.
- TiaraCJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess it's not enough.
- gandre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I wonder what kind of motion it will detect when I puke on it
- MasterBeowulf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0yeah those are pretty kool. just put the fire display up on all the walls, and give everybody free acid. Could you images the panic! Oh I'd be hilarious!
- doughtree, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1booga booga woof woof
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Mah pants! Theyz are on fire!! *splosh*
....
Dah hooch!
Arhg! Glasf in teesf!!! - gandubhalla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I want one too. All these new interfaces have to add up to something soon!!!!!112
- bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2*begs parents for one in the living room
- rannon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Now if only they can have a live video feed be manipulated and provide controls to do the manipulation. For example, something like KPT goo could be nice on a video feed. That might be a bit tricky to program since it would have to do some sort of object recognition.
- abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Plus a Web cam to watch the table. But I think the software would be thousands of $$$ since it isn't mass market and would have been time consuming to produce.
