- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -4/+71The british do, its historical. and who the hell measures in feet and inches... no one, except us.
- pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5510 pounds or 66, this thing isn't safe for regular driving.
I'm starting a new rule: If you can lift your car with little effort and no help, it's probably not a safe car to drive. - Pluckie, on 10/12/2007, -16/+60"The car, which is 10ft 2in long, two feet wide..." 2 feet wide?!? Won't be suitable for most Americans and their fat asses...
Plus, notice speed/performance isn't listed. I wonder if it reaches 5mph. - turnlikeawheel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33It said 4 stones, 10lbs, which is 66lbs.
- BooostedAWD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2366 lbs? + 18mph? = Pow pow power-wheels!
- DMC12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Actually, I think people are misunderstanding this...
It says the car weighs 4 stones 10 pounds...converted...
4 stones is equal to 55.999998412671715 pounds...
So in other words, the car weights 66 pounds, not 10.
Just a little FYI... - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -21/+39What I want to know is 'Who the hell measures in stones?!"
Pounds and Tons is stupid enough, but STONES?! You've got to be kidding me. - mvdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Here we go folks, a picture of the vehicle:
http://staff.bath.ac.uk/ensajg/ - toomuchgreentea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I wonder if there were any pictures around. For all you know this "car" could have sails and also paddles like a bicycle.
- expertninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Gizmodo has a story on it, it is a car (kind of), but only goes 18mph.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It's clearly not a highway-travelling automobile, but an experimental go-cart.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16god people... move to metric, the french invented it, but so what? let them have this one... ok? it really is a better system...
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Why report on it with no facts to back these claims up? No pics, no schematics, no specs, nothing. And where did the poster of this article come up with "just fill the tank once every 5 years" how the hell do you know how long it would take for any one person to travel 8,000 miles? Besides I drive 8,000 miles in my sleep. ***** I wish I only had 16,000 miles on my car after 10 years. Maybe then it would still be worth something. 2000 Chevy Cavalier 148,000
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I really cant believe that the energy in one gallon of gasoline is anywhere near enough to move the 66lbs of car and 130+ lbs of driver more than two or three hundred miles on even the flattest freeway. If it had peddles as well, then yeah, but then my bicycle gets infinite gas mileage.
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Well I'll be, I take it all back (barring discreditation of this site), take a look at this
http://staff.bath.ac.uk/ensajg/tg/news14.htm
Of course they only put in enough gas to get them around the track a couple of times, and who knows if they count getting up to speed but it looks like its real enough. The driver has a spot in the 'car' and it takes place on a track rather than a treadmill. I don't think i'll ever want to drive around like that but I would put up with really quite miserable acceleration to get even 1/10 of that fuel efficiency. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Because it only goes fast enough that it takes you exactly five years to go 8000 miles.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Because, I'll wager, they can't get 8,000mpg from this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks like the car from the Ambiguously Gay Duo!
- s.lucero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10of course it will reach 5mph... downhill with a tailwind.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The Flintstones had cars without the need for gas. Much more energy-independent
- clueless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7actually the real thing is this:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/articles/international/teamgreen120506.html
update: or it could be this:http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/images/teamgreen1-home.jpg - Ibox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My american fat ass might fit in it, but I'm damn sure it wouldn't carry me down the road.
- djbelieve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I think it's a good idea to keep people thinking about this sort of thing. Or perhaps we could all direct our attention to more important matters...like Nintendo's Wii or the new PS3 controller. Lord knows we can't know too much about the earth-shattering developments in the all important home gaming console department.
(Sorry...just had to vent.) - chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7looks kinda like a coffin with wheels.
- copyright1968, on 10/12/2007, -1/+71 US gallon = 3 785.4118 ml. That's 1 mile per 2.11ml. I also say BS.
- turnlikeawheel, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I know that, personally, scotsman.com is my prime source of technology-related information.
Yeah... - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"....was today due to show off the car he believes could be the world's most fuel-efficient vehicle."
It's not news until it's news. - pwrstick, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15"...believes the three-wheel vehicle is capable of doing some 8000 miles to the gallon."
I, personally, believe it can do 10,000 miles to the gallon. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4More details: http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30100-13523559,00.html
I'm amazed at the idiocy of some (most?) of the comments on this thread. It's an experiment, a chance to push the limits of MPG, just like a jet-powered car might push the limits of MPH. You're not going to drive the Blue Flame in traffic, and you're not going to drive this one either.
Research, fools, it's research. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4$12.50 a gallon? Why the last time I filled this thing up gas couldn't have been more than $4...
- mandidp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mexico uses the metric system...
- compwizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The size of the car isn't really what's important here. I don't really think that he's trying to get it mass produced. What is amazing is that it gets 8000 mpg, and that is what he is focusing on. That's an awesome mechanical feat.
- mvdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And lots, lots more specs here:
http://staff.bath.ac.uk/ensajg/tg/thecar.htm - g30ph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Anything smaller than a mazda miata ain't a car.It's a Go-Kart at best.
- TridenTBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4 I am guessing that by the time I empty the tank in this car i'd be dead because it is so flippin' slow...
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I could get this thing to go as far as I'd like by pushing it. It weighs less than my little brother for crying out loud!
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Also, this weights 66 pounds. Normal cars weigh about a ton.
66... 2000...
There's quite a difference. Also, most cars need to have.. a battery? Windows? More than one seat? Maybe THAT"S why people aren't buying these? - JustEvk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Sounds like a car ad. EIGHT THOUSAND MILES PER GALLON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
*8000 miles per gallon while coasting downhill on Olympus Mons on Mars. Performance on Earth may vary. - jcounterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3um.....that 12666mpg on hydrogen..not gasoline. I couldn't find out what this supposed 8k car runs on, but my guess would be gasoline, from the fuel injectors and spark plugs.
- solarpowered, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, a car powered by "belief". Only 8000 mpg, though? You gotta *believe*, man.... more...
(It is a nice-looking "car, though. Nice work). - Phil246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2another thing to keep in mind is that cars like these do not have the engine running all the time. They employ a 'coast and burn' strategy in order to achieve the mpg ratings they do
- jcounterman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Gas companies would love more fuel efficient cars. That would limit the price of gas some, if demand decreases. And if the price drops, people won't start flocking to alternative energies such as electric cars and solar power. The companies are very concerned with maintaining their business model for the future
- binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28000 MPG... maybe it's a 10 gallon tank 80,000 miles.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"and who the hell measures in feet and inches... no one, except us."
...and the scottish, it would seem. - nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@elnerdo
I measure my weight in stones cause it sounds alot less. - middleman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Never! :)
- MrBound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeesh, this article is absurdly sparse on details. What's the science behind it? What kinds of restrictions are in place that prevent this from ever being widely adopted? Why so cheap?
This is why I'm sick of the media lately. Too much sensationalism, not enough meat for the mind. - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Re: stones. Now you Americans know how the rest of the world feels when we see your temperatures in Fahrenheits.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My 6 year old goped has a 35cc 2-stroke engine, has a pipe and it gets up to 30~35~ mph depending on the rider weight.
Gas. < Diesel. < Electric. - pmcall221, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I bet it gets 8000 mpg if it ran empty. Add 150 lbs for an average passenger and efficiency will go way, way down.
