- hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28If you want to get paid by Netscape it is.
- honds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20First off, it barely sounds as a networking site. Where is the "social" aspect other than you can rate illustrations. Second it is just a Coppermine PHP photo gallery with the Coppermine copyright notice removed and a new skin, nothing creative what-so-ever. Any webmaster with a PHP server and reasonable ark skills could make this site in a day, they just had a psudo origional idea (aka makeshift Deviant-art ripoff) and ran with it. No Digg.
See http://coppermine-gallery.net/index.php and http://godaddy.com and you too can have a site like this in under two hours and be featured on Digg.com! - Blazeix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It seems that there have been a lot of links to this blog lately.
Here's the actual link: http://www.amateurillustrator.com - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I once considered submitting this story. But I thought it was too presumptuous. Here's why...
http://www.gfxartist.com/
http://www.deviantart.com/
http://digitalart.org/
http://elfwood.lysator.liu.se/elfwood.pike - tazamore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The problem with this submission is it links directly to TechCrunch which then links to the site described in the post. The proper method of posting to digg is to link to a lame blog post that links to TechCrunch that then links to the site described in the post. It also helps if the lame blog can't handle the traffic and goes dead minutes after submitting.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It looks like a reasonably well put together site, but it seems to lack something. I like how they state at the end that Deviant Art is suddenly a legacy site, they state it's missing features that this new one has, and then don't say what they are. DeviantArt is still far superior in my opinion. To match this new sites features I think all they'd have to add is a "rating" button, which they already have after a fashion with the "fav" system.
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13is linking to every techcrunch article really necessary?
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6I dunno wtf tech crunch is talking about, it's neither put together well, nor a good looking site and that goes for tech crunch too.
I don't see much potential in this when there's already two major communities with pretty much ALL the industry pros and complete novices who get input from the pros themselves.
cgsociety.com
conceptart.org - barryyams, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That name is going to limit growth.
What artist wants to be be called amateur after a few commissions? - MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4B3ta is for satirical 5 minute Photoshop crap using copyrighted Google-Images pictures and has nothing to do with serious illustration work.
AmateurIllustrator is for people starting off with the intention to work professionally in this field. - heyitsmedusty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actual link to site:
http://www.AmateurIllustrator.com - thescimitar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3At the risk of being modded down, I think it's great that there are community websites taking on deviantART in the artist-cum-myspace niche. DeviantART is bloated with a lot of nonsense and each year became more and more petty, and less and less about art. It makes a lot of sense to create a place that fosters the creation of art and associate a community around that goal; along with assisting in truly improving your individual work, rather than competing for popularity (though I'm sure that will occur as it does anywhere). If you're familiar with deviantART then you must surely also be familiar with the unbelievable volume of garbage fan-fiction, "anime" drawings by five year olds (or at least people with the skill level of five year olds), and a culture of popularity rather than quality.
AmatuerIllustrator seems, at first glance, to be a step in the right direction. - ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In what ways do you think that AmateurIllustrator is going to be any different?
Im not exactly sure how it fosters the creation of art any more than Deviantart? And if you think about it, devianart actually promotes the creation of art (within its userbase) to a great degree. The problem of course is that its generally not about education and self improvement as it should be.
I think most of the problems has to do that deviantart and now amateurillu are not BUILT for discussion. They are not built specifically to retrieve critique. Its purpose is "HEY LOOK AT MY ARTS". - itanshi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5thats not a very good reason to hate DA. Wouldn't it be more prudent to discuss the layout, the structure, the ability to grow as an artist there compared to alternatives or preconcived alternate/better concepts?
- inactive, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Why not take on Devianart? The site looks like an artist has never been near it (no offence) :). We are launching a new social network platform for artists this year (we have a beta up and running at the moment - the current layout and functionality is much too constricted as it is a white label technology site provided by ning). Once we go live in August I would appreciate all feedback on usability, functionality and design. I think the market is ready for something cool and well thought out in this space. All feedback (especially negative) welcome. But please don't just complain this is an advert for the site, this story is more like a forum than a news item so I am trying to use it as such. Some good competiors to look at when giving feedback on ours are:
redbubble.com
myartspace.com
any others you guys & gals know of?
Best wishes
Pete
www.tailcast.com - ptoast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did someone just say weeaboo?
http://www.pbfcomics.com/?cid=0PBF61009BC-Weeaboo.jpg#62 - MrNolan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Had to digg this one just for all the quality links in the comments.
- sedgemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's a zillion niche art sites out there with social stuff -- don't forget http://www.pixeljoint.com
Why exactly does this rate as news? - Metal_Guru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, my eyes!!! Does anyone else find this site unbearable to look at? (the name sucks too)
I don't even have the time to find out what it does, because the way it looks is instantly repelling. 'Amateur' is well chosen.
And I agree, stop linking to Techcrunch! Direct URL please. Techcrunch is like any other blog, and if I wanted to read it there, I would subscribe to it (which I actually do). But I don't need to see it AGAIN on Digg. - sabet, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0AmateurIllustrator is a great site. I really like the personal approach taken. I have been doing the same with my artist social network and I'm happy to say that users really appreciate it. Check out my new art social network at http://www.sabet.tv - In no way am i trying take on deviant art - but with my other site, www.mojizu.com and now with sabet.tv I have been able to give people really unique places to share their work in a very niche environment.
- slashdotislame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is this besides a normal gallery script?
- tonymasons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The galleries section is broken. I clicked on a thumbnail for a pic, but the wrong pic opens in full view instead. Very amateur indeed.
- dbchristopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... they have a decent start. As far as website features and design, it isn't anywhere near the site that deviantart is. From a usability standpoint, I think it sucks. I joined and it took me a while to figure out how to upload my images, and when I did, they weren't put in "my gallery." Also, in the past 30 minutes i just spent playing with the site, I honestly could not see where the "social network" aspects come into play.
As far as art education goes, still can't beat the community that they have built up at conceptart.org - AlbinoRaven, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Ummmm,
This is spam in the disguise of a "lead". Bury it please. - warmcat, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2http://b3ta.com is a bit less structured but is a lot of fun
- Shinta, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4DeviantfArt sucks, I fully support this new website if it continues to be furry/weaboo/anime fan free.
- webtech, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Well, I don't see it that way.
I think that there is a lot of services that you will not know how to approach them right before you see a review on them.
But when I look at the numbers of diggs, next to hansamurai comment, all I can think is, how lame people are, cause it's not about what I submitted here, for them it's all about how much stories I have on digg.
For me it's not. Just doing it for fun. - webtech, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Guys, I will and always will submit stuff from where I want and think, it's bringing this community of Digg, a good source of reading.
hansamurai, what do you say.. I shouldn't submit news because you are a dupe?

What is Digg?
Check out the new & improved
