- mork571, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As to how it works, it is utilizing what is called an 'actigraph' - which is really a word made-up by the sleep-science industry (I just made that up).
Essentially an actigraph is nothing more than an accelerometer on one of your limbs. The assumption, which is largely correct, is that your limbs experience paralysis when in deep sleep.
This device, nor any actigraph on the market, will be capable of accurately monitoring your sleep cycles. It i really just determining if your wrist is moving or not. If your not moving your wrist around, then you are likely sleeping. This is an incorrect assumption. However, it is fairly accepted that if you are moving your wrist then you are not in a deep sleep stage.
Actigraphs are usually sent home with patients for longer-term at-home study as they are cheap and it just isn't feasible to provide a patient in-home ECG monitoring.
Most clinics, however, don't bother with them as they are generally considered to provide useless data and are highly inaccurate.
The sleeptracker is also an actigraph. Don't think there's some magical sensor there or that there is some magical means to determining sleep stage via your wrist, there simply isn't. This measures movement, nothing more.
The idea of applying sleep-sciences to end consumers for in home use of waking up at the most opportune time IS a good idea.. and I for one would by such a system if it was based on more than just an actigraph. Accuracy can be increased by monitoring heart-rate and respiration - but then it would become cumbersome to use. - sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who cares about dupes. I hit whats on the main page, not who was first.
- chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was another version of this that was cheaper and was only a wristwatch.. here's a few links:

€199 is a hefty price. The fact that there were no real photos on their website is a BIG minus. - Darklighter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think for what this thing would cost, I could hire someone to train my dog to make me coffee each morning and I can just wake to the aroma.
- Deviant_Tech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For 244 bucks, it better give me a blowjob when I wake up!
- qwertme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does this really work? has anyone tried it?
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll buy it when it hits the $100 price range :p
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$244? I bought my clock at traget. :P I just find the most annoying station, turn it full blast, and set it. Who has time to be refreshed?
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, a Digg post on a $250 item, accompanied with a single render. This is not what I come here for! I feel like I'm flipping through informercials at 2AM every time I check digg now...
- kneeare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or you could master lucid dreaming and practice waking up during the right cycles.
- yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds very interesting! And if it was cheaper, I would possible buy one..
- nano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What i need instead is a soft, bluetooth wristband that could talk to my PC and Mac and measure my sleep patterns. Then I'd write some software to intelligently wake me up. I'd pay $150 for such a wristband provided it has at least a week of battery life and is comfortable to wear.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Market Research 101:
1. Place item for sale at ridculous price worthy of Sharper Image
2. Post related article to item on digg
3. Set new price based on what a bunch of smoes "think" it costs to produce
4. profit. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In 2 years when these are 50 bucks i'll buy one
- Tali, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow i would definitely buy one
...but i'd wait for customer reviews first - badnewsblair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg this because this has always been one of my favorite topics on Digg. There is another watch that operates on the same principle. Personally, I use the Zen Alarm Clock (http://www.now-zen.com/). It isn't as scientific as the two watches, and it doesn't monitor your sleeping, but the tone is pleasant and being a light sleeper, by the time it hits its third progressive tone I am about 90% awake without the harshness of my old radio alarm clock. They are a bit expensive but look really nice! Check em out.
- TheGalacticFork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg for something new that's a good idea, no digg for being waaay to expensive and no pictures of the actual thing.
- Pentarix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0under $100 and I'd order right now.
- number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would get it but the price is too high for an alarm clock. Half the time I don't need an alarm clock to wake me up anyway,
- diggik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It would be cool if they later implemented additional uses for the wireless wrist band monitor.
- Smaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I much preferred the link on the left that talked about (relatively) high powered lasers and the subsequent videos
http://www.hiptechblog.com/2006/01/07/fancy-some-wickedly-powerful-laser-pointers/ - scolainsola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much is good sleep worth to you? $244 may seem expensive, but that is like a .67 cents a day for 1 year - then it pays for itself. You have to think of this as not some sort of target alarm clock, but a medical device - because essentially, that is what it is.
I am not saying I will buy one, but it may be well worth it to some people. If you sleep in regularly because you are in college or don't have a regular job, or still wake up by you Mom's voice, then it probably wouldn't be a wise investment. - tlink211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These digg articles must cycle at different times of the day. I usually go through the rss feed in the morning. I almost always see comments about repeats but the overwhelming majority of the articles are new to me. This is the first time I've seen this one.
- bringonts2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did anyone see that this made the Engadget site?
1. This is just a link to a gadget blog, not to the site itself, so there's no need to judge the product based on that site solely.
2. It is fairly expensive, but if it works, then it'd definitely be worth it. As pointed out, it'd be .61 a year, and that's if you stop using after a year. I'd say that my biggest concern is buying the thing and it not working properly.... - freemdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep, I'd be willing to spend $100 if it actually worked.
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too expensive right now, if it was $100 I'd whip out my wallet.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find 7.5 hours is my sweet spot. If I need an alarm, I'll set it just before falling asleep.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The price might be well worth it, at least I think.
This is awesome - mogebier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I enjoy being jolted awake by my alarm.
It's like being spanked right after leaving the womb.
It reminds you how harsh and crappy the world is. - robgcarr06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too expensive
- ukrdigerati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg'd
only because of the comments on this board... f'n hilarious. best one by clumsyninja. hahaha. - LuckyJack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't even cleverly disguised spam. Come on... a three paragraph "article" on a $250 "gadget".
Meh. - probegt93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with many of the people here. $100 or under and this would be a sweet alarm.
- anarckie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agree on the $100, then i'd buy.
Someone email the company and tell them... - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Price is too high, and I'd actually like to see a picture of a real product than a render. Anyone who preorders based on this is probably still on the list for a Phantom console too.
- DJNewStyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I set my alarm for 30-45 minutes before I need to wake up. SNOOZE. That buffer of hitting the snooze is basically getting me to the right cycle. If I don't have that, I'm so groggy.
- sadsac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't be wearing wristbands with trailing wires while I sleep. I need my wrists and hands free. If I wake up feeling unrefreshed I just do back to sleep... problem solved.
- EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great product but nowhere near worth the 244 US. Even 100 is a bit much but worth it.
- cappslite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does it work?
- anillop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have bought this in a second if it was reasonably priced, but over $200 is ridiculous. That's way too much to pay for a product that might not even work.
- flashmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a coffee IV would work for me.
- indication, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So far I've read some good things about the Sleep Tracker watch, but this just moved up my wish list!
I am considering purchasing one when the price falls or it becomes available to North Americans, and not just Germans. - techbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Agreed, a little too pricey.
It might go nicely with a another nighttime product I enjoy, Brilliant Dreams:
http://www.brilliantdreams.com - trevorduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also agree that If it was under $150, i'd totally buy it
- thomcomstock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, it's got to be better than waking up face down on the men's room floor at Grand Central Station.
- 525600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0surprise, surprise, but I too would buy one at a more reasonable price for an alarm clock. bring it on.
- brlewis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg needs a way of merging dupes. I'm digging this one for the comments.
- Beestie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bought one and use it religiously. It works. It wakes you up when you are almost already awake. I have had a huge problem with the alarm clock waking me up when I'm in stage 4 (heavy dream state) and I canNOT get up. I set the watch to wake me up in the "lightest" sleep moment in the 30 minute window prior to my alarm time (and still use the alarm as a backup) and it does so every time.
- tw0bit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't they make a watch like this?
