- moosebumps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'd end up getting so good at that puzzle. I'd be able do it in my sleep.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It needs to give you en electric shock if you put a piece in wrong... then it will really work...
- eventide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I once had the idea to make a Simon (that game with four colored buttons in a circle: memorize the pattern, then hit the buttons in the same pattern; game gets progressively longer until you lose) into an alarm clock where you'd have to solve a Simon puzzle to turn it off. Of course, I lack the electronics skill to pull that off... Then I saw the MIT alarm clock that was a little car that would go off and then drive away so that next time the snooze button wouldn't be in the same place. And now this. Of course, the low tech solution is to put the alarm clock across the room, forcing you to actually get out of bed to turn it off. Someday I hope to make the simon clock...
- M1ke323, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HAHA this is perfect, just this morning I snoozed through 9 alarms on 3 different devices. Needless to say I missed lecture.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm sure it'd only be a matter of time before I smashed it with a hammer."
At least it's not a Rubix cube alarm clock. Solving that could take you all day, or a least a few minutes. But yeah, the hammer would be an awesome option. - robsonde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made something a bit like this a few years ago, it displayed a 4 digit random number, you had to key in that number in reverce to make it stop.
- iambeefy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of the roll away alarm clocks I have seen before. It makes you get out of bed to find it.
http://www.clocky.net/ - tek1024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alarm clocks and I don't get along so well. Evidence:
http://gallery.thinkblog.org/tbmisc/trenchKnifeClock.jpg.html
Cool concept for this puzzle-clock, though, for those with longer morning fuses.... - Dither, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$52????? Try $40: http://www.g4m.co.nz/detail/2673.htm
- blog302, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or I can just put my current alarm clock in a location far away from my bed so that I can't hit the snooze button and save $52. Oh, yeah, I can set it so that it plays static instead of a radio station...that helps too.
- fduplex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Rather than using an alarm clock I do this:
sleep 5h ; while true ; do echo -e "a" >/dev/console ; sleep 0.5s ; done
running within a screen session, logout of my account and unplug the monitor. So far I haven't unplugged the computer.. when that happens maybe i'll order one of these things. - mdshort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd just glue the three pieces together into one piece and put a spring underneath. WALAH! one button :D
- PhrosTT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for those people saying "I'D MEMORIZE THE PUZZLE IN A WEEK"....
i'm fairly positive this thing launches the pieces into the air... meaning u gotta find them before u can even attempt assembly. - timbudtwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The comments on that page are annoying.
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know; but why don't people just consider putting their regular alarm clock on the otherside of the room from the bed. That would force you to drag your butt out of bed and walk over to it. That or increase your ability to hit far away objects with your shoe.
- eaasness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My problem is I'd just sleep through the damn thing(no snooze button required). I have my Bose cranked to 80 and still sleep though it.
- efisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+025 years ago my solution to this problem was to set a series of alarm clocks at 5 min intervals that lead to the next room where I had a Synertek SYM-1 programmed in machine code running an alarm clock program which could be shut off by entering a number sequence on the keypad. If I pulled the plug the memory was erased and the cassette interface rarely worked so if I did not want to enter a lot of hex code into memory I entered the number. I am not normally a "morning person" but after awhile I trained myself to function anyway.
- aaplmacguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate convergence!
If I want to sleep 10 minutes longer, I'll hit the snooze.
If I want to build a puzzle, I'll get out a puzzle.
I don't want them both together.
Dhalgren has it right. Except I get up before my wife. I don't hear the alarm but I do feel her serrated elbow in my side. - alej744, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hehe... this is what I use (even though my mommy still wakes me up) : )
http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/index.html
I use that and choose to play loud Trance music with easy wake leading up to the best part of the song at 100% volume, but my dad gets mad sometimes because hes a loser and he hates trance - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In related news, broken puzzle clocks are being found in back yards across the country. And business analysts say the window repair business is booming. Here's Ollie with the weather.
- atrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There was one that went towards the ceiling so you would have to sit up more each time to shut it up....
Another idea is slowly having a 100watt lamp turn on over a durication of 5 minutes, and have some kind of anoying way of turning it off (have to log into computer and run a shell script, if comp on other side of room) - lfrank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think I would have to break this clock if I couldn't get the alarm turned off fast enough.
- T3rry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd make use of some superglue real fast :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You just wouldn't use it. Duh. You'd use a different alarm clock.
Then again, I don't use an alarm clock. I just wake up early enough not to have any problems. And in the rare cases I *do* need an alarm. . . . Well, that's what the Treo is for. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It should be a 5-square Rubik's cube...
- rayishu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 i loike this but im not gonna pay freaking 52 bucks try 20 dollers when it comes out in every SEARs in the world
- martyuiop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 4 pieces just cover the four holes in the top to turn off the alarm. I imagine I could fall back asleep with my hand covering the whole thing, or throw it at the wall hard enough to shut it up.
- zouhair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OH MY GOD TORTURE INSTRUMENTS
- oneoffmanmental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not as good as Charlie Brooker's (www.guardian.co.uk/theguide/brooker) Facial Stabbing Alarm Clock which gives you ten seconds to wake up before knifing your face.
- rgremill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This reminds me of that alarm clock that would crawl off your nightstand and go and hide.
- tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My simple solution is putting the alarm clock on the other side of the room; when it goes off, I have to get up, walk over there, press snooze, and walk back. Usually by then I'm awake enough to remember I have school I have to go to.
- JJR2527, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just put the alarm on the opposite side of the room?
That does it for me. - price_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0other side of the room works for me too, and use the money to buy something else you will reget having bought.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Neat idea, but I'd still end up turning it off in my sleep.
I'd never pay $52 for that though. - etaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could just see myself eventually unplugging it every morning instead.
- valloq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still think my idea for a Simon alarm clock would be awesome.
http://pres.umptuo.us/2006/02/01/noooooo/ - brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For some reason I imagine mine would end up in alot more pieces than four...
- thidranki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All the pieces are the same, so its just getting the peices on the clock, and why not just leave the pieces on in the first place?
- Bokista, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this in FHM recently, I believe.
- crazooDOTcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is exactly what I need...too bad it's so damn expensive for an alarm clock =(
- aten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is just sad :(
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LMAO And how long before someone "Mods" it with a single button... ;)
- Bisqwit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering how often I wake up for whatever reason (usually the computer waking me up because I've told it to), do some things with computer (which usually require some of the same skills as that puzzle) and fall back asleep soon thereafter, I don't think this alarm clock would work well for me.
- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just throw it out the window and go back to sleep.
- njbraun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have had similar issues with my alarm clock. But my fix is free. I just either hide my alarm clock at random locations around my room, or i'll put something really heave on top of it.
Problem solved @ 0dollars! - Hippopo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Won't you get used to the where the pieces go in a while?
- kylebrothert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I need is an alarm clock that's easier to set.
I get up at different times every day, and changing the alarm time is a pain in the.. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone chew gum to wake up? That works well for me, I place the alarm clock really far away from my bed, so I have to get up turn it off, usually fall back into bed (which I think many people end up doing) but I have sugarfree gum at the lock and just start chewing it, usually the act of chewing the gum (and usually very flavorful/cinnamon gum) will have you conscious enough in 5-10 minutes to get out of the "just 5 more minutes" mindset where you don't rationalize how late you'll be...
wow that was lame, but overall I find it more effective than this pos - freexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to disable the buttons on my alarm clock (stereo) and hide the batteries to the remote by throwing them away without looking before going to sleep.
Yet I always managed to wake up hours late with a remote (complete with batteries) in my hand.
It didn't matter how complex the task, I would solve it and go back to sleep. I've tried loud alarms, quite alarms, alarms that get louder as time goes on, mulitple alarms, complex tasks, sleeping with light on (works best) and many other things. The only thing left are the Lumi alarm clocks that get brighter to wake you up. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another cool way to wake yourself up is walk into the bathroom and splash cold water on your face. Boom you're awake.
