- designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11awesome video! I especially love the part where they paint it!
- martona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Amazing find. Too bad they didn't show the cockpit at all - that is one very cool place:

- alecks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Very cool!!!!
- xtassin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was born in the town where all the parts go under the bridge (Bordeaux -FRANCE). They had to build a laser beam guiding system to make it goes through properly. They also have to wait for the tide to be down otherwise there is not enough room.
There are plenty of amazing tricks engineers had to use to finally put this big thing together. It is a great achievement. - jimio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because Airbus is a consortium of European companies, they build different bits in different places eg. Engines at Rolls Royce, Left Wing in Wales, Right Wing in Spain etc. then final fitting is in Toulouse. So they kinda have to build it in different countries. It sounds inefficient, but they co-ordinate really well, so it all works out good in the end.
- martona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here are a few hundred excellent A380 photos on Airliners.net:

Airbus = Toyota, Honda
There is just something not quite right with American Engineering. - InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's some incredible design and engineering. Fantastic video too. Can't wait to ride one :)
Dugg. - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was awesome, but I really wish they had also shown the process of laying out all the interior as well. Oh well.
- alspar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Whatever the pros and cons of each plane, the sheer size of the A380 makes it more impressive to me as a feat of engineering. When it comes to these things, size does matter. Thats why most people are more impressed by the Eiffel Tower than the Blackpool Tower.
- QettoE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This was by far one of the best videos I've ever seen. Thanks!
- slamm6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Cantaclaro, you're a dick.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But Airbus is European...so it would be more like VW, BMW perhaps.
Very cool video by the way. - ptknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How can you possible say that? Pay some respect! Oh, and I'm from Europe, btw
- tpodr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's a joke!
- nundeeram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not just that the computers that run the A380 dont run windows; they dont even use a processor that could begin to process that OS. The computer chips that run airplanes are designed specifically for airplanes, with instructions being executed with triple redundency. This is not your mother's Pentium.
- complex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great picture of the cockpit. A keyboard is front and center instead of the control stick.
- mentor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Thanks; I can at least get a sensible format from GV.
http://blog.sesse.net/blog/tech/2006-03-09-15-42_distributing_videos.html - sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny. The DIGG profanity filter edits out "cockpit" in this thread :)
- limaunion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder what operating system does this Airbus use, at least from the Airliners picture on the left side there's a monitor and seems to be using M$ Windows... gosh.
Great video! - thecontinental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would quadruple digg that if I could.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty cool. Wonder if they had any "extra" parts left back after all that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's amazing what can be done
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As much as I'm rooting for Boeing in the next wave of "airwars", I still gotta say that the 380 is a magnificently sexy machine.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I didn't see any tail section on the screen at at that time... what happened?
- jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2^^^^^^^ check the test flight in medellin colombia http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-889282256938084876&q=airbus+colombia ^^^^
- joebrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was pretty rad. Can you imagine what the designers must feel like every time one of those flies for the first time? Gotta be like seeing your baby being born! And I agree, some cockpit footage would have been cool.
- mentor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh...are you really an Airbus employee?
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Awesome video. A bit over-dramatic...
- RailsAddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4LOL! I'm sure they use some sort of RTOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_time_operating_system) to actually manage the avionics and whatnot. I'll never fly again the moment I see a pilot booting up Windows XP in the cockpit! Could you imagine that? "Ladies and gentlemen, we're having an issue with our computer systems up front, all of our screens are blue."
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree its is a little to dramatic, but non the less a grea a great video
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ford and Mercedes are credited as being the first cars ever built (argueable, but true). I am sure you know which one is considered a more refined car. Today Ford sucks, and people drool over a Mercedes. Being the first in an industry has nothing to do with quality. 747 is just 40 years of suck. Thats 40 years Airbus has spent learning and studying what it takes to build a quality plane. While Boeing may lead an industry, airbus is an industry leader.
/wouldn't be surprised if UAE cancels boeing contract and picks up these bad boys - martyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a fairly frequent traveller, and one who really, really hates BIG planes (the load time is horrid), I can assure you that they do indeed need to "reboot" an airbus now and then. We recently were on the ground at Sebastipole in the Netherlands, went out to the runway, and they literally had to do a power-down re-boot of the whole plane. This has happened to my only on Airbus flights, never a Boeing.
- Mental64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that was cool. Video well done.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.alexisparkinn.com/photogallery/Videos/Airbus320_trees.mpg
- Man/Beast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why ship the fuselage in pieces? Couldn't they put it together where it's manufactured and fly it wherever it has to go?? Would save towing the cockpit through obviously tiny and tight city streets. V. cool video tho: +digg!
- innate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe they use Windows for non-safety-essential functions like low-priority communications with the airline HQ, pilot e-mail, and ground navigational charts (note that they are *required* to also have a set of paper charts at hand even if using the computer ones). Here's a picture of a Boeing 777 with Outlook (!) and Internet Explorer (!!) at the pilot's seat.
http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0323564&size=L - pplant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It seems backwards to build this thing in pieces only to assemble somewhere else. Must be the geo-political facets of the Airbus coalition, but the expense of that shipping must be immense. Looks like a special built boat was needed as well.
The break even point is: 250 airplanes. Yikes!
If this plane has any problems with safety before they reach 250 airplanes, then airbus will have a huge problem on their hands. - jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
i saw the test flight in medellin...huge - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. This is the fruits of human engineering in action. Beautiful. Goes to show you that we're capable of building great things when we work together.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I highly doubt that the computers that they are controlling the planes with are running windows. If anything, those supposed windows machines are there for entertainment and are entirely unconnected from the plane.
Although I highly doubt that they are windows machines. - snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree but the aircraft in the video probably wasn't fitted out with anything it didn't really need to operate during it's initial flight testing.
- butchcassidy503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still prefer Hughe's Spruce Goose ;)
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very nicely made video. i liked the music, the huge variety of angles, and oh man, the color balance. every light and color seems to glow or pulse in airbus' facilities.
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great video. The paint scene reminds me of something from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'
- Régis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also find crazy to build big parts in Germany and put them on a train, in a boat, on a truck again, only to deliver them in Toulouse. All this doesn't make sense (both on an economical or environmental point of view). Couldn't they simply have the big parts made nearby?
- cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1shows how far humankind has gone. great technological achievements. movie gave me goosebumps, and the music added to the effect!
