One of the guys I know brought in the KMS Server VMware image to the lab @ work to show it indeed does work as it activates clients for a 180 Day/6 Month interval at a clip. Supposedly I should be able to turn this server on 6 months from now and re-activate though I wonder if the KMS Server needs reactivation in 6 Months as well, making me think that maybe this image will be useful only for this next 6 month period and not forever. Anyway Mr. Gates shoudn't be worried about me anyway as I have no intention to crack Vista, instead I make up a minority that merely wants to learn about the new KMS Server that I will have to know how to use eventually as users adopt Vista servers and clients in a corporate setting.
In my opinion all this KMS server does is ruin the most lucrative relationship you have, the paying corporate customer who now has to build a KMS server is they want to adopt Vista clients and servers in their domain which I can tell you has not gone over well with Volume License customers I have spoken to. Their fear with it is what if there are problems with the KMS server and suddenly all their clients in the domain are suddenly not activated and stuck in limited functionality mode which would be a catastrophe.
What you guys need to do is lower the price of the operating system as Windows makes up about 20-30% of the total cost of a PC which is high. Also lose the Vista Home Basic version as most consumers who get this with their PC's will not be happy as it lacks the feature-set that makes Vista attractive to most consumers which are the Aero Desktop and sidebar. I persoanlly would dump the KMS server as well and eliminate the complexity altogether. Expect a quick adoption by consumer-based users and a slower approach on the corporate side as most of the organizations I deal with have PC's that are not totally "Vista Ready".
