- gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Too bad they had to report their findings to the Chinese. I wonder if they were commissioned to do this.
"God damned Mongolians, comming and breaking down my city [fire]wall"
--South Park - melophobia07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Every time chinese man try to bild city [fire]wall, mongolians try to knock it down!
- zacharychaos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11They fired on their own students.
Period. That is horrendous. Its not like they've apologized.
I'm a college student. If I had a government that sent in tanks and machine guns to silence my protest, I would fight that government as long as I drew breath. - aembleton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@zacharychaos
Are you furious for the US government for firing on their students too? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings - icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Lets see you try to break down my (shi)city firewall once I pour sweet and sour pork all over your keyboards you goddam mongolians!
- tbye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If we don't knock it off they're going to kill Jack Bauer before the cargo ship even gets back to China.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11ALL YOUR GREAT FIREWALL SYSTEMS ARE BELONGED TO US
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11A friend of mine used to work for Equant (now Orange Business Services ) which was part of SITA a subsidiary of France Télécom in Florida. Equant used to play, and possibly still, a VERY big part of Chinese networking. He excitedly called me one day to say that at the request of the Chinese government, Equant closed all the routers allowing access to and from China, for testing purposes. China was cut off from the world that day.
I would suggest to anyone that is interested in Chinese networks to keep an eye on Orange Business Services and/or France Télécom. - mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Clayton, speaking at the Sixth Workshop on Privacy Enhancing Technologies in Cambridge last week, said that the researchers had reported their findings to the Chinese Computer Emergency Response Team."
Well thank god for that, hopefully the Chinese authorities fix this quickly... - phoggey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7About Kent, the difference is that in the 1970's, they only had gas gernades, and that was not a planned firing, they were attacked. Oh yeah, and they had helmets, no body armor.. or tanks.
PS: They regret it. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Thanks Cisco so how much will it cost me to oppress a nation?
- johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's quite surprising no one tried this sooner! Especially considering a similar approach is used in other censorship systems used elsewhere in the world.
The response from China will be interesting. - skatingrox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Turn the caps lock off. Please. You're making my eyes bleed.
- zentro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Own goal.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think you meant to say "Cambridge is only helpING the Chinese government oppress its own people." On a somewhat related note you can now edit your comments.
- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They'll just make another Internet Center and refill it with hackers.
Generals, anyone? - Haxker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Furious that he couldn't torture and put those guys in prison...
- nonhuman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You mean like stopping giving them our money?
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3aembleton has a point:
Was anyone tried for the Kent State shooting? How about burning down, bombing, and shooting anyone fleeing the Branch Davidian church? Or for shooting an innocent woman with babe in arms?
Police in the U.S. are plenty brutal. They would run over students with tanks if told to.
It does not excuse the brutality in China, but we are only better than the tyrants in China if we bring the brutal to justice. - chickenlegs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4this firewall affects businesses dealing with china also, not only activist.
- i use to work for a company that had contacts in china.
- i gave them a link to our website through email
- they could not view our company website, since it was blocked
- this happened twice with two different companies - romulusnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...And then specifically told the Chinese Government all about it.
- Haxker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Clayton, speaking at the Sixth Workshop on Privacy Enhancing Technologies in Cambridge last week, said that the researchers had reported their findings to the Chinese Computer Emergency Response Team.
Ya, knowledge is power. - zacharychaos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I wish there was some way we could break the back of the Chinese government.
- Voodooengine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6What happened to you Cisco? You used to be cool...
*(previous post meant to say Chinese)* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always have thought that there is some way to circumvent the GFC, when I was in China, if I try to visit a blocked website, the site would actually show up for like half a second, then disappears and a connection was reset page comes up. So I think the researchers findings are correct.
- leboff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the uhh.. great wall episode?
- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What of those poor gold farmers?
- Demarche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@phoggey
Thank you. Context is important. - masterT1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they didnt specifically say that it was a cisco firewall they said it was a firewall that uses cisco routers. W/E. Thats why you let the japanese do the work!
- NomenNescio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Which episode is it?
What season? - popophobia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What happens if there is an "academic break of [insert CIA/FBI/White House] firewall"?
- someguyinajar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A mac user AND a script kiddy? That's a rare combination.
- LawrenceDudley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How much are you willing to pay? ;-)
- krazikamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So... what if you forged the source IP to be one of the other firewalls (I'm assuming there are more than one).
They probably have things to block that like not responding to RSTs or not responding to packets with other firewalls as the source, but it's worth a try. - miles32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What episode is that from?
- whatrucrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@idanny
Preemptive action? Preempting what, i hope you're not talking about the US? In regards to China i don't have a problem with destroying their firewall, or stopping spam and DDoS's. My point was that if you want to argue against the serious killing of innocents then perhaps take a look at not only the obvious fascist dictatorial countries, but perhaps the shining light of democracy the USA, too. Personally i'm all for unfettered access to information, smash that firewall baby. - iDanny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I guess we are sort of on the same page.
- zerocoldn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's those god damn mongorians again.. blakin down the city filewarr
- mtnbluet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fantastic---don't like the idea that they have tried to make the free internet the walled out internet. Don't like it at all!
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So some academics have declared war on China?
- devilsadvocate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey look! Cyberterrorists!
Let's not worry our little heads about all this grown-up stuff. - williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We learn some very dark secrets and some politicans end up on trial?
- whatrucrazy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not that the dictators of china are wonderful people (fascist bastards actually), but i can think of one country that just recently invaded another state, has killed at least 50, 000 of its citizens and is occupying them as we speak. These people not only have tanks but cruise missiles, aircraft carriers unmanned drones and nukes - and i don't think they regret it.
- iDanny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what’s your point 'whatrucrazy'? Tell me why is preemptive action a bad thing? You preempt Mumps, Measles, and Rubella with an immunization shot. You stop terrorist by killing them, (or taking them offline in this case). An oppressed people will have the chance to taste freedom. This “great wall” has cast them into an information dark age. The communist party has been attacking our system for years. They have written viruses, DDoS privately owned websites, and let us not forget all the spam! Where is your white hat?
