- thomashawk, on 10/19/2007, -0/+49Of course I should have known better. But still it pisses me off that companies like this are allowed to stay in business and operate and abuse people. After doing some more research and finding similar stories about the company it just made me cringe. It also points out though how totally unreliable the store ratings are from places like Yahoo! shopping. This place had a four star rating with several hundred reviews. I think that they, well they have been reported as, bullying people into not writing negative reviews and then probably seeding the reviews with fake positives.
People like this should not be allowed to be in business and we should all be doing better research about the companies we buy from -- myself most of all. I'm embarrased that I didn't do a better job researching this outfit before buying from them. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Company name: PriceRitePhoto.com

Update: Well I just received a call back from Steve Phillips at PriceRitePhoto. He said that I should be expecting a call from the "FBI" shortly and that "my tactics" of flooding his store's phone lines was "illegal." When I asked him to hold on as I wanted to turn on my recorder to record our conversation he hung up on me. - jaspinDroid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I registered a Digg account just to Digg this article.

As a professional photographer I know to stay with someone like B&H for all my equipment. - djrbx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9This deserves the front page
- HerbSolo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hey - that reminds me of something - when i was 14, i visited NY with my parents. The prices for photo-products were a lot lower than in Europe so i went into a shop to buy a bag for my camera.
Very soon my parents and i were surrounded by three guys, most propably the shop owners, who apparently didn't want to sell me the bag for 20 Bucks but instead 2 of the bags and an infrared filter for 150. They took my dad's cam and screwed the filter on it, praising the thing as highend new invention, allowing you to take photographs in the dark without flashlight (yeah - of course), and when i told them i just wanted to buy one bag, one of the guys started throwing the bags through the store, cursing and insulting us.
Seems to be some some sort of standard procedure ;) - JzLosman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7once again diggers, i would like to request we go about this as adults, it is more effective and scarier if we write intelligent emails with actual things to say besides "you are a goat f*cker". I would like to see an end to the prank phone calls and more actual phone calls in which we inform the store that we are seeking action against their unfair practices rather than have arnold talk for us.
Lets do this the right way and really make them piss their pants.

And when shopping online, concentrate on the BAD ratings more than the POSITIVE.
Sort by low ratings, they're more important to read than the "OMG GUD STURE ROFFLE" comments. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, this is going to KILL his business. This is all over the net.

http://www.digg.com/technology/PriceRitePhoto,_They_re_Back - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you said he was operating out of brooklyn? if these guys have a location, have a few friendlies pay their store an anonymous visit. make sure your name isn't mention, just have them walk in knock over a shelf of camera's and go.
on the more legit side, i'm not aware of the government agency in the usa that handles it, but i'm sure there is some form of fraud squad in the usa that would love to know about people extorting money out of you by threatening to charge your credit card unauthorised transactions, and threatening to post you cc on the internet. my guess would be these guys are already involved in cc fraud and very minor digging by authorities would result in jail time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As a follow up to my previous post: http://www.bbbnewyork.org/businessreports/Default.aspx?id=1026
"Based on BBB files, this business has an unsatisfactory record with the Bureau because it failed to respond to one or more complaints." - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is this a tech driven public service warning for the holiday shopping season?
I bought a camera from them 12 months ago - because they had it in stock, at a good price, and I needed it within the week before some travel (it was a Nikon intended as a gift). They tried the upsell (failed), they tried the service contract(failed). They then cancelled the order 2 days later (after followup call). Took 2 months to reverse the credit card charges.
I was a little relieved - I then went to a local B&M and picked one up ... and managed to talk them into a price match (due to poorly worded ad on their part).
Scammers like Price Rite NEED to be taken down - just as they use the internet as their preferred marketing tool, we can use it as a tool for expressing dissatisfaction. It cuts both ways. - itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is the kind of thing that can get out of hand very quickly. When does the punishment outstrip the crime? Everyone is marching towards the castle with the electronic equivalent of pitchforks. It's -really- interesting viewing from here.
- Skeksis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dugg for 10k.
- DavisFreeberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Unfortunately, it's not just this camera store the uses these questionable tactics. I refuse to use shopzilla, pricegraber or yahoo shopping because they choose to include disreputable tactics. You have better luck on Ebay with a total stranger then with these outfits.
- fulldecent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's a shame noone will read this, but I'll type anyway. Avoid all sorts of scams when buying on the internet, and when dealing with any business entity in general by knowing this.
When you call them, the deal will sound great and encourage you to buy. If they want to scam you, they will call back later to swindle. This is proper business tactic. Anyway, to avoid scams, whenever someone from a business calls you, ask if you may record the call. You don't actually need to, but it will keep them on the up and up. - Anunnaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4>>> COMMENT FROM ANOTHER SITE:
Nikon claim I bought an stolen camera from price rite
by (xyz) ,Aug 09 '05
On August 4th 2005 I bought a Nikon D2X camera from pricerite photo. On september 21st I sent the camera to Nikon for service. On october 10th Nikon told me that they will keep the camera because I bought an stolen camera. I talked to pricerite general manager Steve Phillips about this matter and he told me that the camera he sold me wasn´t stolen, that he will send me a new camera if it is necessary. In the midtime, I called Discover and disputed the amount of the transaction with price rite photo.
Thanks god the camera malfunctioned few weeks after I bought it other ways I will never find out or maybe I would find out when too late. - Mohan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One tactics i use is to give my credit card number with one number changed.
If every thing goes fine, and when they are about to bill, and they find that card number is wrong, they call me and get it corrected.
If any ***** happens, the same as above happens, but the shopkeeper will be in the other end :)
If he goes to police, i say it was a typo :))
Works in India... do no how it is there. - Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Note to self: Don't piss off the Internet.
Also, don't buy cameras online.
Also, also, don't fight a land war in Asia - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I took the time and reported them to pricegrabber and linked to digg with the over 4,000 diggs told them in the reviews themselves it talked about the inapropriate action....it was the quickest I have seen them pull product listings lol took them less than an hour http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_summary.php?form_keyword=priceritephoto&sort=&form_keyword2=

http://donwiss.com/pictures/BrooklynStores/h0121.htm - Tofu4679, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These guys actually bought an XL2 off me thru ebay last year. The sale actually went very smoothly. I talked to some guy named H Baker and he sounded pretty shady but I got my $$.
- weezyweazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good god what a bunch of hustlers. Will avoid like the black plague.
- alceria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, that's crappy, but seriously, most photographers know that these seedy camera stores exist and will try to pass off greymarket items in place of what you thought you were ordering, or do some other kind of bait and switch. That's why most people stick with B&H, Adorama or the other photo supply companies that have a great reputation. I would never make such a pricey purchase from some company I had never heard of, especially a photography related purchase. I've heard too many scandalous stories, especially from camera stores in NY.
No doubt the salesperson is off their rocker, but I find it a bit amusing that people are gullible enough to buy from such dealers in the first place, especially since this guy mentioned that he new a lot of these camera stores are shady. - Greg-J, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This definately deserves the front page.
Come on diggers. Do this man a favor and shed some light on these a$$holes. - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+3Absolutely shocking. I've had bad customer service experiences, but they pale in comparison to this. In a legal stance, what can you do? In Australia there would certainly be quite a case, some of these people could claim extortion (threat to post credit-card details on internet) amongst other things. Really very disturbing. If there's been one time I would like to digg an article more than once, it would be now.
