- nfg05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah you're also ignoring a HUGE part of this equation: AD REVENUE. How happy is Forbes.com going to be that you're mirroring their content without their permission and they're not getting the page views and click-thrus that generate them ad revenue?
- fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2mirrordot sucks for the mere reason that most of the time it only mirrors the first page and often doesn't mirror images.
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mirrordot makes me want to die.
- ibbofez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that if they did mirror the sites, it would cause a big battle over copyrights. A cool feature that could be added to Digg would be to be able to add a mirror link when posting or add a "Post mirror links here" drop-down from the "problem" combo-box. I am sure it wouldn't be hard to script something that would copy the original link and have it cached by Google when clicked on.
- motorbikematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think leviathan3k has the best solution.
Quite frankly, I wouldn't want any of my sites mirrored without my permission because I want to know who my visitors are. Since I don't have control of the mirror server, I don't access to the server's logs. Having said that, if the site IS slashdotted/overDugg, then I can forget about what my server logs have to say.
A good compromise would be to simply mirror the site and then offer a mirror link if and when the site is reported as down. Alternatively, give the site owner access to the logs for that specific page. - eyesx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tips on Getting Slashdotted and Surviving It
http://pchere.blogspot.com/2005/10/get-slashdotted-tips-and-tricks.html - thundercleese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I can see the usefulness of a mirror site, it could be put to bad use also. If the mirror site were to show another sites login screen and a user entered a username/password, the mirror could copy that information before sending it on the the legit sites login application.
- kcyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually emailed digg a few weeks ago about adding an archiving/mirror feature to digg to help limit the 'digg effect'.
The email was in enough detail, but I never got a response. - lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its easy when you have a 100mbps connection at your disposal.
- sq377, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I dont think this would apply for Digg.com. It's understandable how Slashdot with it's pages written by a select few, can have it's pages mirrored without a thought of people ruining it. With Digg, people could cheat a page to the top, and it could be a virus or something destructive. It would be pretty tricky to pull off.
- el33th4x0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Try this instead: .cob-web.org:8888
For instance: www.cnn.com.cob-web.org:8888 - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theres a firefox extension called cacheout! that if you right click it uses the coral network to make a mirror
- leviathan3k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I had another idea:
Sites that could potentially be slashdotted should have a redirect so any referral coming from that site automatically goes to their coral cache. - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ditto the Coral cache suggestion, Tron3k.
In fact, they could add it on the second the story was submitted. I wonder if the nyud.net guys would have a problem with it. - Junx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know this is basically implausible, but I think the best mirror for Slashdot and digg links would be one that simply mirrors the actual text of the article (and any _relevant_ images). We don't need all this fancy-schmancy ***** site layouts that still follow the 1997 way of making them, especially since most of the WWW is textual information in the first place. If you want to go out giving binaries of things, go to alt.binaries and keep the WWW a bit cleaner...

Huh?
1. Digg and Slashdot are the same in that most of the stories are user-submitted. The only diff is that at Slashdot the editors pick the ones that go front page.
2. I don't see how a cheating malicious page to the to the front page has anything to do with mirroring a page in case it goes down. - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First off, the animation isn't great. It's true.
But I'd like to see you TRY to do it with one hand. Just the trying would be like climbing Everest. - bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yeah you're also ignoring a HUGE part of this equation: AD REVENUE. big sites dont need mirroring. small sites are the issue right here then. but they wouldnt have gotten ad revenue if their server was slammed to the ground anyways. - jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>> Yeah you're also ignoring a HUGE part of this equation: AD REVENUE. Not only that but they are making their own revenue off of ads. Its a bit like stealing content.
I'm sure Forbes.com doesn't need a mirror, anyway. - ham_man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why doesn't /. Just mirror the pages themselves...?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Greasemonkey for Firefox + digg - add mirrors extension solves it for me. It adds this to every link:
http://geocities.com/justgold1979/digg-add-mirrors.png
get the script at userscripts.org. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would not want my site mirrored. Too many legal ramifications...
Wont Fly... - nicklinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had a idea just like this! http://digg.com/design/What_digg_really_needs_to_have_in_version_3
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No it's not.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That site is hideous! I couldn't look at it for more than 3 seconds without my eyes bugging out.
- h0dg3s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Common sense, put up a mirror on a server that can handle it.
- nulall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0personally, i'm a huge fan of the "digg - add mirrors" greasemonkey script from userscripts.org
i'm not sure why such a feature hasn't already been added to digg - it has no downside whatsoever - the regular link is still left accessible if i want to reach the site that way, or i can click the extra buttons for the coral cache, google cache, or mirrordot links. it's awesome! - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm pretty sure digg IS the cure for Slashdotting ...
Still not sure what the cure for digging is.... - ursabear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm... Not sure about this one... With all the wonderful discussions on copyrights, does anyone want to venture a guess at the implications of this? Seriously...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should call it "DiggHole"
or something
lol - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And Mirrordot sucks because it only mirrors the page linked in the story. If it's a 3 page article, forget about it.
- m85476585, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Another idea would be to keep your pages thin, don't write crappy code, and host with a good provider. Seems simple to me."
My Yahoo website survived slashdotting and it was fine. I got 90,000 views in a few hours, but it wasn't even slow.
But I had one big file (15MB) on a server connected by my DSL (so I didn't waste all my Yahoo bandwidth) and that didn't last long! I wasn't home when the story appeared on the front page, but when I got home it was impossible to use the internet. I had to restart my modem to change my IP address.
When you get that many visitors there are things you might not think you have to think about, but you do. My log file reached 600MB! - DNordbak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow, it seems the page linked to telling how to avoid the digg effect is getting just that thing

Well, and the thing is, there aren't so few articles on Digg, so the traffic is a lot more spread out. Though this is still a very cool concept, imo. Its nothing special but its smart. - kevcoles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is only helpful if you use their RSS feed... and there is a big sponsors bar on the top of all pages.
