- TomMcBaum, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why does no one mention CinemaNow? 1200 - 1500K high-def videos are all $1.99 (as I write this, at least), and the quality is amazing on my high-def TV. You can start watching a minute or two after the download begins. You can burn a DVD from some higher-priced titles, complete with bonus features and DVD menus (using the FluxDVD system from Germany). There's a fairly large collection of free videos, as well. They play in the Media Center environment, or on any Windows PC. So, step outside the "Apple-centric reality distortion field" here, folks and take a look around. Apple is not the leader here.
- soulcatcher78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Has anyone shopped for a dvd this week? Take a look at what they're doing to the pricing on all but the newest releases when you do...looks like the deals have already been struck to move away from a physical product *long term if not short term* in favor of downloads. Once again, it looks like everyone's playing follow the leader and hoping that they can have the best "library" of content. No one seems to be thinking of the possible bandwidth costs as they all have their eyes on the possible dollars to be made. Living in a rural area with limited broadband access would cure them of these delusions though.
- roguescout, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2FTA:
"The broadcasting (netcasting?) of television programs and clips on the Web moves the debate away from Internet-versus-TV because if TV executives put their best material online and get paid for it, the proposition becomes Internet-cum-TV."
Heh... How many ways can that statement be read?
Discuss amongst yourselves. - vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i think the decline in theatre sales might also have something to do with the $18 movie ticket, the $8 dollar popcorn, and the $5 soda...
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well it will be in full swing soon. They'll sell standard def online and use HD as incentive for people to buy hard copies because those files are too big to download efficiently.
The only use I see for downloading movies is if you either don't care about high definition or if you're using the media for your portable device. And that's good because it makes Hollywood less nervous I suppose. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Well excuse me, I can't seem to edit comments properly. I meant to tack on something to the effect of how while UnBox is some progress, it's still very much chained down to the ground. It's unfair to say that it's in full swing - that's really what I ought to have said.
- tatami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Wonder if this is really making money. Apple entered music download business only because they wanted to sell the hardware, iPod.
- kingstarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0And a video file is likely to be 100 times bigger size than a music file. Bandwidth cost will sky rocket for the seller.
- kingstarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Mark Cuban who sold broadcast.com said internet video streaming is too costly to broad cast high quality video. I wonder how much the they need to charge to make money. Youtube is paying tons bandwidth money to meet users demand. I don't know how long they can survive in the long run without having enough revenue coming in.
- colobikeguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Isn't there a thing called... dvi... to transmit to a tv? I'm a bit out of the loop...
In any case, I thought this article was interesting because I just read an article in The Week... not this isnt a plug for a magazine... in which movie studios are considering sending movies directly to homes instead of theatres.... but the theatre owners are fighting this. Apparently, analysis indicates 70 percent drop in theatre traffic and increase in home consumption that translates in 3 bill more a year for the studios.
Well, in any case, I would love to get a big screen and consume at home... but I am worried about screwing my kids up the same way mtv, atari, commodore, ultima screwed me up... so we only have cable internet... and no tv. - mickwalks, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2who really gices a rip. Only retards care about video crap like that just buy a dvd and convert it to your ipod stupid idiots it's cheaper and you get more for your money
