*****. - FOcast, on 09/11/2008, -0/+36New?
- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/10/2008, -0/+24An interesting article which examines the idea that people are getting hooked by their online activities. I can't imagine anyone getting hooked on Digg!.... :)
QAF: "The problem isn't widespread but we know of serious cases in which teenagers don't leave the house, don't have interpersonal relationships, and have been isolated in front of their computer screen for the past two or three years, and only speak in the language of the characters they play with in network video games," - zerobackup, on 09/11/2008, -0/+23Ok, it's 4:23am and now I want some peanut M&Ms. Thanks, dick.
- palehorse864, on 09/11/2008, -0/+22Someone really needs to form an online support group!
- TunaFishGangsta, on 09/11/2008, -0/+19It's not true. I can quit whenever I want. I'm going to digg a few more articles and download a couple tv shows and follow up on the latest news and check my email and watch some porn, send a few IMs, and after digging a few more articles I'll do some online gaming, and then I'll go to work at my day job of developing web apps and then I'm really going to bed. I will even send a Twitter from my cell phone as I'm falling asleep so you know that my promise to get off the net has come to fruition.
- Kronos6948, on 09/11/2008, -0/+13Hello, my name is Lou, and I'm an internet addict.
It started for me around 93, when I found the Hun's Yellow Pages going through my Dad's AOL. Now with the advent of Youporn, Pornotube, Efukt, and AskTiava, I never have to deal with loneliness again...until I turn off my computer. - stunebula, on 09/11/2008, -0/+11I've been addicted to the internet since the late 90's
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10If you read the article, what it's actually describing is online video game addiction. Calling that "internet addiction" is ridiculously general. It's not the internet that's causing society to be concerned with these people, it's that they're using the internet in a completely unproductive way that doesn't really benefit them or make them any money. If these same people were spending the exact same amount of time online doing websites/CSS/javascript/whatever, nobody would have a problem with it and nobody would call it an addiction.
Yes, people do get addicted to WoW and things like it. I know a guy who started playing WoW and because of it he lost his job, his girl, and his house, in that order. Now he lives with his mom and he's STILL playing that damn game. But calling his problem "internet addiction" would be useless. It's not the internet that's the problem with these people, or even the amount of time that they're spending on the internet, it's what they're doing while they're on the internet that's the problem. Call it game addiction, porn addiction, whatever...just be specific about it. The internet itself is just the means. - logic6, on 09/11/2008, -0/+10I don't have an internet addiction, I have a porn addiction, the internet is just a vehicle.
- philadelphia, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9It can be the new excuse...I didn't mean to do that, but I'm hooked on the Internet and I can't control my actions.
- HookmasterCH47, on 09/11/2008, -0/+9God bless science and its ability to give us excuses for our actions.
- kmesp86, on 09/11/2008, -0/+8wow the coincidences keep piling up. i decided here recently to give this computer i'm using right now to a relative. i played my last game of TF2 last night and i'm getting rid of all my consoles. i noticed that when I spend time away from them i get stuff done. I play my guitar, I read, I hang out with old forgotten friends, I get closer to my God, and my life actually progresses.
I would suggest to anyone who thinks they have a problem with the computer interfering with their lives to get rid of their computer if they can. its like an alcoholic keeping liquor in their room. - BradOFarrell, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7"In a few years we'll have couples in therapy because the Internet will have become their main occupation."
Gah! What is this bleak and horrible vision of the future where most jobs involve sitting at a computer all day!? - inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7No *****. This story is straight outta 1999.
- mikeabundo, on 09/11/2008, -0/+7Telling someone he's addicted to the Internet is like telling an ancient Egyptian he's addicted to papyrus.
- Oztog, on 09/11/2008, -0/+6All that porn isn't going to watch itself
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5Dugg for spelling M&Ms correctly.
- Durinthal, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5My (online-only, ironically) friend and I discovered this on our own years ago. My friend is doing better after limiting their computer time in general, while I'm currently on Digg at 4:40 AM...
- Lorddias, on 09/11/2008, -0/+5Wouldn't be surprised if this article was dated as 1995 or something, Internet addiction is really nothing new lol.
- charm803, on 09/11/2008, -1/+6I didn't mean to digg you up, but there's only 9 comments so far and I had few choices.
- HotSaucePanCake, on 09/11/2008, -1/+5This is old... the cure... a girlfriend
- chadell, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4The Internet is the nirvana for all types of junkies. Someone once said to me that you will either turn out to be a workaholic or alcoholic or a womaniser. The Internet has made it possible to get addicted to all these at the same time.
- MrCobaltBlue, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4Yeah I just got 1000 free hours for the first month of AOL! There's not even 1000 hours in a month but I'll be spending them on the interwebs!
- mynameistux, on 09/11/2008, -0/+4my name is mynameistux, and I am addicted to the internet.
- IJS209, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3Hey! I can quit anytime I want to.
But not right now. - bxblox, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3I believe this is really an addiction because I knew one of the junkies in college. Addicts are way worse than your usual "binge interneters." This kid would go to outrageous lengths to keep the connection between him and internet undisturbed, and would go into a rage if you tried interfere. Anyhow, he flunked out by sophomore year because he couldn't pull himself away long enough to go to class. Dont be so quick to dismiss this, as people can become addicted to the use of just about anything.
- GTKashi, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3I'm pretty sure I read something like this around... when was that? The beginning of the Internet?
- Shenaniganz08, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3I worked with a Psychologist during my summer research ( video game and gambling)
Believe me when I say that it will take a while before Internet addiction becomes a recognized disease. Even video games, which have been around for much longer than the internet, are still not considered to cause an addictive disorder ( were not included in DSM IV which was in 2000)
Most health professionals agree that Video Game Addiction will probably be included in DSM V ( sometime around 2012)
but who know when Internet Addiction will be recognized as a real disorder.
( DSM = Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) - TheMachine1, on 09/11/2008, -0/+3I know your joking but they are among the most addictive sites.
- GordonFree, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Well, I have it. Is there a "cure"? Should I hope there is?
- OfNumbers, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Beat me to it.
- antdude, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Friends? They're all married, moved, too busy, etc. for me even when I made myself available. :( However, Internet made them keep in contact with me!
- CoreyTamas, on 09/11/2008, -1/+31998 called. You know the rest.
- BLOODSUCKER, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2New? I've been hooked for years!
- jakiao, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2First there was a man whose ass became fused to his toilet seat. Next there will be teenagers with their ass fused to the fabric of their computer chair. Dun dun dunnnn.
- inactive, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2get that ***** out of here... go back to /b/
- NanoStuff, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Why do I see no mention of 'real world' addicts. Those people that spend so much time outside. It's a disturbing problem.
- Talphin, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Proud addict since 92. Pre AOL. Prodigy, BBS and IRC. This story was already old in 99.
- phoenix2330, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2people will always find new addictions it's inevitable
- homesqua, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2wow... gee.. that kinda hit close to home.. haha
- TheMachine1, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2When I was in college the school put limits on time a student could use IRC daily because students were using it endlessly and failing class.
- aphorizm, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2I've got pretty crippling net addiction. I got rid of my computer at college because I was just torrenting tv and movies all day. Now I'm quite a bit better. I'm dreading when internet gets standard on cheap phones though. Won't be able to avoid needing to google everything anybody says.
- EndouOuto, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the Hun. Is that still around?
/I'm @ work so i can't check. - TheMachine1, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2"Call it game addiction, porn addiction, whatever...just be specific about it. The internet itself is just the means."
The fact is even the term "internet addiction" is not widely accepted in the medical community right now so trying to break it down into subtypes is many years away. But your right it should be. - OmegaWolf, on 09/11/2008, -1/+3What a crock! There's no such thing as Internet addiction. Internet, computers and texting are just things people enjoy doing. If a person enjoys doing something, it's not an addiction, it's just their lifestyle preference.
- FutureisDubious, on 09/11/2008, -0/+2sounds like me ;_;
- starkistuna, on 09/11/2008, -0/+1Yeah since the late 80's for me.
in the internet i am free - donna1234, on 12/02/2008, -0/+1addiction
