- berzerk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I agree. The ALA method seems to be going in the reverse direction from what google did with their mapping system.
Not to be mean or anything, but why would blind person need to look at a map anyway? - BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Some very cool ideas presented here.
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6buss, accessibility isn't just about blind people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This is completely useless.
- kortina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the point of the article is not necessarily to inspire anyone to create a map accessible to the blind per se, but, rather to demonstrate some slick techniques for making any site more accessible. I had no idea that the display:none attribute would cause text to be simply ignored by screen readers. With a little tweaking, the techniques presented here could be applied on any website as an alternative way to create dynamic elements (like show/hide boxes, tooltips, navigation menus) that would still be accessible to those using screen readers.
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2naw, i was just kidding... now that i look at it, it's really cool.
It'd be cooler if he used google maps (maybe with overlays to keep the visuals down), but still good.
I'm still not sure what the purpose is. Doesn't seem to have the same one as google maps anyway... so no reason to compare... - Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2is this the digg that is mentioned here: http://tinyurl.com/p49sw and here: http://tinyurl.com/k9yzz ?
- geoffoliver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty impressive stuff. If you could drag the map around like Google, that'd be *really* slick. However, I do agree that accessibility probably isn't that important when it comes to maps.
- accidental, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I find Google maps far more accessible than the one ALA came up with.
- jay7890, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yahoo maps is slightly sluggish... maybe it's macromedia's slow implementation of flash for linux.

How about we make smarter web browsers and dont force web developers to rehash the same exact code that limits the application's abilities? - nut854, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The blind DO go places stuartj, but yes you have a point in that making a map more accessible for the visually impared probably isnt the best use of resource. My main task in using an online map is making a plan for a drive, and not general information about the population of India.
Still, its good intentioned. - buss, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Its not always about you. What about people who are blind? I'm sure they would disagree with you.
- asalko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Izzie: so it seems ;)
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I find that offensive!
Blind people do not have doctor appointments, errands, eat food (Go to grotery store), Enjoy Entertainment, shop, have jobs, or anything else? You expect a blind person to be sitting there next to a radio doing nothing? You are a complete MORON! Ignorant people like you make me wish that you would become the thing you hate. However making you blind would be TOO KIND! - steger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well the reason is that the anchor tag within the"dt" goes to the wikipedia page about that city. Plus for screen readers it would have the link shown as the dt and an anchor tag is far from the worst type of content tag. I think this is very usable in many circumstances and i digg it.
- wattssw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Its optophobic comments like these that keep me coming back
- ErrandboyOfDoom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1funny post, too bad you're getting buried by all the blind digg readers.
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Most maps (I'm talking paper here) have probably never been accessible to the blind anyway. :P
And besides, how many people out there making mapping software? Like 10? Why do we need to read an article like this that applies to pretty much nobody? - gann, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Digg!! I know some blind people and they are all very frustrated when visiting some sites that have a lot of images (without ALT!) or flash. The situation is better now with more proper use of XHTML, CSS, RSS, etc. but still lots of sites are very user-unfriendly to them.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3What about unborn fetuses? They should develop a means for unborn babies to use Google maps. And how about the rights of the decapitated? Google, for shame!
- stuartjmoore, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7blind people dont need to go anywhere
