- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I wonder if enough dildos hit the glass Toyota center, will the glass break and rain down upon the second-lifers inside?
- thrallie, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16People who play Second Life, don't have a FIRST life.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And what does that say about people who complain about how Secondlife people don't have lives posting on Digg?
Some people just cannot enjoy the fact that other people enjoy something that they cannot appreciate. Is it because you desperately want to be like everyone else that you fear people that don't think like you? - Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Depends on the velocity of the dildos. Also.. are they vibrating? Lubricated?
Too many variables to consider. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As was mine.
But it seems that every Second Life story posted someone makes that same statement.
It's about as funny as "Will it Blend?" - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So what's the next closest thing to SecondLife? I have yet to see another company still in existence that is attempting to tackle the metaverse issues. Property rights, intellectual rights, user-generated content, governance, streaming media are all things that need to be addressed.
WoW doesn't even come close. - bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exactly, returnofmalv;
I find it much more immersive and compelling to build things using imagination and skill versus killing a rat and being lead by the hand to the next quest or level.
Second Life is a platform... not a game as the uninformed seem to think.
And while there are some pretty terrible builds there are some incredibly impressive ones... not only from a graphical standpoint but also from a scripting perspective. Most people don't realize that almost EVERYTHING in SL is user created. From the avatars, props, and buildings to the scripts that drive objects. - AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice:

- LowRentDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah I'm a sucker for MMO's but was bored to tears after a few hours running around there.
- sixdust, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dugg for Sun microsystems and Cisco networking.
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SL really isn't about the graphic eye-candy, that's what Sony's Home is for.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If it wasn't about the eye-candy, then everybody would be playing MUDs."
Not a fair analogy. What MUDs allows you to create content for the world? SL is not all about eye candy. A metaverse is much more than just visualization.
Try checking out Midnight City in SL. It's a very interesting place. - bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I do wish that people would stop referencing an article that was not even researched and obviously fabricated as the reason SL is a "pyramid scheme". Do a little research before blindly stating something as fact.

He used "private" banks in SL... NOT the LindeX. LindeX (which is run by Linden Labs) has trading limits which are CLEARLY marked. He attempted to move $10,000 in one day. If it was through LindeX (not possible) he's an idiot. If he used a private bank (only possible option) - he's an even bigger iidiot. That's the equivalent of giving some kid in his mother's basement $10,000. As a matter of fact, that's probably the case. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Back in the days text adventure games were considered immersive. Why is that? Does everything have to have flashy graphics to be considered immersive? What about the fact that it lets you generate content in the world and display it to many others. Some would consider that to be an immersive feature in itself. Certainly, that's a big part of the metaverse experience.
Anywho, I would say that flashy graphics alone do not make for an immersive experience unless, of course, you're 10 years old. - spindrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it wasn't about the eye-candy, then everybody would be playing MUDs.
- bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you're bored of running around in SL and can't find anything to do you need to refine your search as little more or be willing to think outside the box of being told what to do by the developers. It's a sandbox. You make your own fun.
- bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you want to see it just use the beta voice client. It's been up and running. The voice servers are seperate from the SL servers so it doesn't create any additional lag.
The problem with a third party app being used to initiate voice is that everyone you want to communicate will need to know about it and decide to use it as well... A built in solution will allow anyone to utilize the feature if they desire to. People have been using skype or teamspeak for a long time with SL but not widely, or done only in small groups of people.
The only real use I see for voice in SL is at corporate affairs where it could really benefit the attendees. Everyday residents are taking a mixed reaction to it. Some love the idea while the majority hate it. It might be a brief trend for the first few months but I think it will die off. - eleventybillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh man! I can't wait! I'm going to go buy a PS3 right now just so I can see those shoes in 1080i.
Holy Crap!
/lame - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I fully expect this kind of thing to explode in PS Home. Reebok shoes and Nokia cellphones in 1080i? Hell yeah!
- bulkhater, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1I call shenanigans. This isn't your site. It's not a hideous, Flash heavy abomination that crashes some browsers. It's not ugly enough to be associated with something you've done.
Your Blog and company site are better examples of your level of technical skill:
http://www.collins.net.pr/blog/
http://www.cognation.net/
By the way, the "sitemeter" on http://www.cognation.net/ SCREAMS "amateur." The fact that you have to click on the splash page image is also a rookie screw up. The site is vague and poorly conveys information about what you supposedly do. It looks more like a sham site for a mob money laundering operation than a real consulting firm. - swrostmore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2maybe i needed a sarcasm tag... I'm not actually excited about virtual shoes in 1080i (who would be?) Also nobody cares if you buy a PS3 or not. Nobody.
- xxMarka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i bet the AOL store is very lonely
- BigDaddyBucyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 Second Life is a good option to have. Of course i play console and computer games, but sometimes i'd like to do more than kill/level. Creativity and socializing is good in between slaying the Alliance and saving Ascalon.
- clmarcha, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've tried to play a couple of times and it is so laggy that I can't even do anything.
- lattasource, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0intern vs professional?
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The only good thing I can see about SL is that it provides endless material for SomethingAwful.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1After several clicks you're finally taken to the actual representation, which appears to credit kzero.com for the actual work and resulting brand map.

I guess once someone else has done the real work it's not hard to pay an Indian $1/hour to go to each location and press printscreen.
Well done, ZDNET! - gingerbreadcat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'll be so glad when something replaces Second Life. The technology behind it is about five years out-of-date. It's full of terrible graphics, sloppy code, and dysfunctional communities due to poor support and social modeling. Not to mention the fact that the economy is joke: http://digg.com/gaming_news/Second_Life_s_supposed_economy_is_a_pyramid_scheme
I look forward to something completely new. Preferrably something made by a company with ethics. - thrallie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's called a joke.
- Anoobis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"its not the graphics its the game play that matters!"
- NoSuchAgency, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Bring on the flying penises!
It's good to see that SL is as infested with corporate eyesores as the real world is. Really, what imaginary tropical paradise ISN'T improved by a mile-high Adidas billboard or a Nissan dealership between the palm trees? - spindrift, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The more footage I see from Second Life, the more I realize...
Wow, it looks really, really crappy.
Somehow I imagined the MMORP platform touted as the realization of Neil Stephenson's metaverse to be a bit more immersive. - deanc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1......Yep and how many repeat visits are they actually getting? Have people on Digg actually found anything worth doing at any of these brand name supersites listed?
My company http://www.mexuar.com are delivering a voice audio hotspot technology for Second Life built on Mexuar Corraleta SDK and Asterisk that enables speech - yes I know Linden Labs is working on their own 'super voice' solution....I'll believe it when I see it - our advantage is we use off world Asterisk servers and java browser pops to initiate voice so no ...laaaggggg :)
Maybe if people are actually able to use voice they might actually be able to implement activities worth being involved in.
Cheers,
Dean@Mexuar.com - everybod, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2You have enough in your collection to find out. Let us know what happens.
- srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2What if your first life suxs (like yours)?

What is Digg?
