- MillionsLivio, on 01/26/2009, -5/+53I have a deep respect for Gates. Say what you will about the man, but he gave away a huge amount of his fortune and time for the benefit of others around the world. Now he is doing it full time when he could just buy an island and retire for the rest of his life.
- Dopeness, on 01/26/2009, -1/+34It's awesome to see the world's richest man trying to solve some of our world's biggest problems.
Good job, Bill! :) - bunnybash, on 01/26/2009, -2/+30Bill Gates makes me smile... he knows he is a geek, doesn't try to be cool, in fact he embraces his nerdiness.
Plus the man is doing more for the people who the rest of the western world try to ignore, than anyone in history before. I am a big big fan of Mr Gates. - LiquidSpark, on 01/26/2009, -3/+26Bravo Bill! Trying to kill malaria "like he did netscape"!
- doctordbx, on 01/26/2009, -2/+23Go Bill!
- Urbalist, on 01/26/2009, -0/+20I think bill is a better person in both regards. Steve has been struck with a few illnesses in his life but I wonder how much of his "hard earned cash" he put forward to help the development of cures for said diseases. Bill on the other hand shovels his own money to organizations across the globe for the betterment of all mankind regardless if it benefits him or not. So no matter how many ipods Jobs sells in a year he well never earn the respect that Gates has from people in need.
- LawSchoolBound, on 01/26/2009, -0/+18I've been very impressed with both Bill Gates and Warren Buffet (who has given a large part of his fortune to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation). They have both stated that their money is better used for the good of society and will given away to charitable causes rather than simply passed on to their heirs. Not that they won't be very well taken care of, but the vast majority of their fortunes won't stay in the family. They have the right to do whatever they want with their money and their decision not only to give away their money but to put in the work required to see that the money actually gets to where it needs to be is inspiring. Gates could be living on his own tropical island without a worry in the world and instead he is working full time helping out third world countries.
- LonesomeFighter, on 01/26/2009, -1/+18I hope people above weren't bashing Bill Gates because they like Apple or something. Bill and Microsoft are different things and Apple wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Bill being forced to keep them around for monopoly reasons.
- valis, on 01/26/2009, -1/+13I believe that in the future - and not very far into it - Bill and Melinda Gates will be remembered mostly for their humanitarian works. (I also believe that Melinda is often not given enough notice or respect for her part in those works.) He is one of the richest citizens on the planet. In some ways, he does more than some governments.
Well done, Bill and Melinda Gates. The cynics may believe what they always believe, but the Gates are putting their money where they speak. - Renton, on 01/26/2009, -3/+13Sham Wow guy > All
- YourMaster, on 01/26/2009, -0/+9What the *****.
Dude, do not discourage rich people from donating to worthy causes. And frankly, Netscape sucked when Microsoft moved in; IE didn't start sucking until Netscape was dead. Killing Malaria is several thousand times more important than killing a commercial webbrowser that was slow, unstable, and less standards-compliant than even IE. - bunnybash, on 01/26/2009, -1/+10you my friend, are a very mixed up person... "only living (sic) a small fortune" see you missed the point, it is still a small fortune!!!
and no he isn't giving all 60biillion away in one hit, he is being wise and actually getting involved with his giving and he is investigating how to best serve humanity with his money.
I hope one day soon you will be able to join the rest of humanity in hoping for a better world and making it happen instead of bitching about others who are making a difference. - MillionsLivio, on 01/26/2009, -2/+11He was until he started giving away his money to charities.
- Renton, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8Steve Balmer can't promote ***** and he has temper problems.
- zkscelso, on 01/26/2009, -2/+10i like bill: smart guy, gets stuff done and socially conscious.
- kdnewton, on 01/26/2009, -0/+7Taking Bill's advice. I'ma donate to the Free Software Foundation :)
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Melinda has played a big role in his life in general. I once read that before he hooked up with her, he'd literally stay at Microsoft all day and night, to the point where he'd answer the phones after hours. And of course, no concern for charity like he has now.
- inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Warren Buffet is the world's richest man; Bill Gates is number 3.
http://www.forbes.com/2008/03/05/richest-people-bi ... - LonesomeFighter, on 01/26/2009, -3/+8well he aint the richest. but he is up there
- noboot, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6I hope he changes the American schooling system. Our High Schools need to really encourage kids to do something. College isn't for everyone, we need mechanics and other skilled jobs that do not require a college education. He advocates that.
I hope diseases can get eradicated and I hope that the resources to feed and make these saved lives thrive are also easier to obtain.
Human life is precious, hopefully Bill and others can save and make life better. - bunnybash, on 01/26/2009, -1/+6i believe history will remember Bill Gates as one of the greatest men of the 20th/21st Century... and it will have nothing to do with his software.
Bravo Mr and Mrs Gates!! - TheMachine1, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5I know Kevin Rose has 1/1000 the money Gates has but that just means he can attack smaller problems. How about support a cure for chapped lips, split ends, hiccups, etc?
- MarianaPeyton, on 01/26/2009, -3/+7Billy Gates is one of the greatest men.
- WhiteHatTrick, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Except there is richer people that wish to remain unknown.
- immatellyouwhat, on 01/26/2009, -1/+4Most of his kids are already grown and successful, They still get like 10 million each. I wouldn't mind.
- zkscelso, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3can this not be about software?
- LinuxCobra, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3you know the germans make good sutff
- KibibyteBrain, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3He did buy a huge campus in downtown Seattle for his foundation. Its pretty cool that he is giving his non-for-profit employees far nicer conditions to work in than those at Microsoft. One of the worst things about working for NFP is that normally you not only take home less money with no chance to get rich off stock, but on top of it all you get modest if that working conditions.
- crocodilexp, on 01/26/2009, -1/+4Ballmer, of course :)
- computershack, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Helped the victims of Katrina for a start.
What have you ever done? - KibibyteBrain, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Yeah, down with improving education if its not implemented exactly the same way I'd like it!
- chalkboy, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Netscape sucked when IE came that is why IE won.
- antechinus, on 01/26/2009, -3/+5WTF! This article isn't about Steve Jobs first *****, or Steve Jobs first kiss.
- MillionsLivio, on 01/26/2009, -1/+3http://www.celebatheists.com/index.php?title=Bill_ ...
I'd say he's Agnostic. - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2"Look it can lift the money right out of your wallet, amazing!"
- scratend0788, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2it aint just the fact hees ritch, even though im sure it helps.
its also the fact he is a decievingly driven guy.
i find it conforting someone like him is working on some of the problems many of us choose to ignore. - edwinjose, on 01/26/2009, -1/+3He is an atheist like most philanthropists. I certainly hope your imaginary friend in the sky rewards Pastor Benny Hinn when he flies to heaven in his private jet.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+2Buffet is a major contributor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (something along the lines of 30.7 billion dollars worth of shares) which is awesome. I've actually read a few times that Bill never liked being the worlds richest man (though I'm sure he did has a feeling of self satisfaction the first time he was).
- scratend0788, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2gates is way cooler than jobs.
- YourMaster, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Because he's spinning doing good things as evil actions. Seems like people would prefer that Malaria have even less funding and Gates just hoard his cash.
Also, because it's a bit of a conspiracy theory. - PinkyTheWinky, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1MS World Domination
- tigertee, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1damn gates is down to earth, that's what i've always liked about gates he isn't smug and he seems like just a regular guy with an interest in fast cars.
hey bill here is an idea, donate some of the money off each windows 7, not sure how much, but to one of your charitys. - jackdaniels06, on 01/26/2009, -2/+3Where is the source that he is an athiest?
- gnotDigger, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2you are downvoted why?
- OBKenobi, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1ROFL.
- LiquidSpark, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Yup. Many kiddes probably don't remember Netscape but that POS app got so bloated it became useless. That's why IE crushed it.
- BenTheTank, on 01/26/2009, -3/+4And what do you give pepspaa?
- OBKenobi, on 01/26/2009, -3/+4Malaria Home
Malaria Professional
Malaria Ultimate - radye, on 01/27/2009, -0/+1good keep go like this....
