He said we would first see jobs lost in the financial sector, then the job losses would hit the retail and tech sector pretty hard. He said last night on MSNBC that it's not unreasonable to expect unemployment to hit the 10-15% mark very soon. He said "our economy is falling like a stone."

We used to be IBM owned, but AT&T came through and bought us up a little over a year ago. I'm attempting to look for a job now as my position is being outsourced to Canada, Brazil, and India.

I use to be callous and would shrug when reading of layoffs. Safe and secure in my little cubicle.
And then I got the handshake and the door. And it was as if I had never existed.
Being let go is a brutal and stunning event. It can and will have long ranging repercussions on the individual. And I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

This has nothing to do with capitalism. This is greed and cruelty. If the Big 3 fail, we're expecting 20-30% unemployment - maybe worse as more local businesses close. About 15-20% of the factories here make auto parts.

- pcghost, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I canceled my AT&T service about six months ago. AT&T is pure evil, but I do feel bad for the lower level employees who are losing their job. It should be their management and support reps. We need to re-breakup Ma-Bell in my opinion.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5You know after AT&T bought out Cingular, they got rid most if not all of Cingular's leases for cellphone tower space and then proceeded to do away with a lot of their own leases for tower space. Hence, why if you were a Cingular user before, you have seen a lot lower level of service and coverage on your cellphones since AT&T took over.

- BESTenemy, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3 All depends on the kind of statistics you're looking at. The official unemployment numbers only measure running unemployment claims. They don't count people that had been laid off and are living off their savings. They don't count those whose unemployment benefits have ran out. They don't count people that are working part time and can't get a full time job.
Take a look at the following chart. The U-3 is the official number. The U-6 is closer to actual unemployment at it is already over 11%

As it takes time for the numbers to register, most of the mass unemployments announced recently will only become visible in 2009. The official number may very well reach depression levels next year.
