- JumboJ3t, on 11/03/2009, -6/+547Verizon is not wrong here. AT&T got called the ***** out on a nationally-televised commercial and is pissed off because it rightfully makes them look bad. Their 3G coverage sucks iBalls and they know it.
I have an iPhone and I live smack dab in the middle of a "covered" area (the Chicago suburbs) and AT&T's so-called "3G coverage" is hot garbage. Thank you, Verizon, for calling AT&T out. Here's to hoping that this inspires AT&T to actually *compete* in the wireless internet market instead of forcing customers to purchase high-speed data plans on a network that has limited high-speed data coverage.
True competition spurs innovation. - Chahrlie5, on 11/03/2009, -9/+438What the hell?
Must be nice to have lawyers on retainer who don't care about AT&T actually having a case or not and know they get paid even if they lose.
It clearly says it's a 3G map, not overall coverage map.
Spend less money on lawyers and more money on towers. - madwh, on 11/03/2009, -4/+408There's a lawyer for that!
- JumboJ3t, on 11/03/2009, -1/+287I'm sorry, one more thing:
FTA: "Since Verizon's entire network is 3G, the gaps in the red map are actual service gaps -- but Verizon doesn't show that the gaps on the AT&T map might be covered by AT&T's huge 2G network."
So... the commercial says the maps represent 3G coverage. And they do. Suck on it, AT&T. They have you. - RoroCo, on 11/03/2009, -7/+240Actually... If you look on AT&T's website... the map Verizon is using is pretty damn accurate for 3G coverage. Does AT&T want Verizon to lie about AT&T's coverage for them? I am confused.
- rypic7, on 11/03/2009, -2/+228My name is AT&T and I'm a big whiny bitch.
- IceTrAiN, on 11/03/2009, -2/+225Somebody call the waaaaaaaambulance.
- jimboredford, on 11/04/2009, -1/+110Dugg for iBalls. Oh yeah, that and being right.
- Dagreenman, on 11/03/2009, -1/+82With the money they waste on this, they could actually get to work on FIXING THE NETWORK YOU DUMB BASTARDS.
- poprocksandsoda, on 11/04/2009, -5/+82It's embarassing that AT&T believes that people aren't smart enough to realize the different between 3G and regular data service.
- YellowDucati, on 11/03/2009, -9/+80AT&T More bars in more places where you aren't
- teamgwho, on 11/04/2009, -0/+69I lol'd too
"AT&T has suffered and continues to suffer irreparable harm as a result of their ***** network."
//fixed that for ya - woofers07, on 11/03/2009, -5/+62***** you AT&T, ***** you so much.
- Slashdpc, on 11/04/2009, -0/+54My favorite part of the Court filling is:
"AT&T has suffered and continues to suffer irreparable harm as a result of Verizon's misleading advertising." - Takura4, on 11/03/2009, -1/+54Seriously. Suck it up, AT&T. Can't deny fact.
- freshyill, on 11/03/2009, -1/+51More Bars In More Places™: If you have five bars and then they all suddenly disappear and eventually reappear, that counts as 10. More bars in more places, duh.
- clownshoez, on 11/03/2009, -4/+43Truth hurts, eh?
The fact is, people are willing to pay more, and forgo the iPhone because Verizon's coverage is better.
They state clearly in the ad the maps are of "3G coverage," so all Apple is doing is bringing attention to their weak 3G network. I am sure Verizon is thrilled.
Maybe once iPhone stops propping up AT&T with its exclusive contract, they'll be forced to actually improve their network. - estrategy, on 11/03/2009, -6/+43We want to testify against both of them for being guilty of promoting bogus maps. http://deadcellzones.com
- jtown, on 11/04/2009, -0/+35What a joke. 3G coverage is becoming a very big deal. I left T-Mobile in 2007 because they couldn't tell me when they'd be rolling out 3G service in my area. I dumped AT&T when their 3G service went to hell at my primary usage location a few months ago. My decision to switch to Verizon was based on 2 things.
1) They use a different technology. If I'd gone back to T-Mobile, who now has 3G coverage here, I probably would have ended up on the same oversold 3G tower that AT&T uses. (The local site is apparently managed by Ericsson, not AT&T, so I assume anyone using GSM in this spot is getting their 3G from that tower.)
2) Verizon's 3G coverage map.
That was a significant factor in my decision. A big schmear of red 3G coverage. I'd have to trek all the way out to Dead Weasel Hollow to drop down to 2G service and 50 miles past that to have NO service.
I hope AT&T has to pay Verizon's legal fees when this is done. They should be upgrading their creaky network, not suing people who point out they suck. If they did that, maybe they wouldn't suck so much. - cyrix, on 11/04/2009, -4/+37Dugg for iBalls.
- jimboredford, on 11/04/2009, -1/+34While they clearly have no case and this is a frivolous lawsuit, let's not underestimate how much old people don't understand about technology. Have you ever tried explaining the difference between an operating system and a browser to an old person? ***** impossible.
- swizzcheez, on 11/04/2009, -0/+31I can only hope that shows up in a Verizon commercial.
Trouble is, both companies would happily rape your kitten with a Rhino horn if they thought it would make them another $0.0005 per minute... - zerobeat, on 11/04/2009, -1/+31Text message on my phone this morning: "Free AT&T Svc Msg: AT&T has added a new cell site in your area to bring you greater coverage. "
Yeah, they're trying to do damage control. - blackinthmiddle, on 11/03/2009, -4/+33No, the only thing they're saying is that non-technical people might think, if they have no 3G coverage in an area that means they have NO coverage at all, which is simply not true. AT&T is saying that they should make it more obvious that they offer coverage to the entire US, just not 3G coverage.
Bottom line, any change that Verizon makes is just because they want to be nice. There's no false advertising on their part. AT&T is just going to have to suck it up.
Oh and for those saying that AT&T should just improve their network, it's not so easy to do. Putting up a new tower is often a lengthy process and in many areas, residents will fight you tooth and nail. How Verizon got it huge 3G network is beyond me. - Drizzit, on 11/04/2009, -0/+28I'm not confused, it clearly states 3G coverage. AT&T's lawsuit has no merit.
- DmitriyZ, on 11/04/2009, -4/+31"American's"
Really? - valetudomexican, on 11/04/2009, -2/+29Butthurt much you sleazy *****?
***** AT&T
and Nickelback - UselessTrivia, on 11/04/2009, -4/+29Most human beings are easily confused.
Fixed that for you. - Slashdpc, on 11/04/2009, -0/+24QQ AT&T, you put your money into your phones and not your network, unlike Verizon, and now you get made fun of. Put up or shut up.
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/03/2009, -3/+27There is a map and an app for that.
- d3dm, on 11/04/2009, -0/+23AT&T is only making things worse by bringing this to light. Verizon is getting a double bang for their ad buck.
- Staggx, on 11/04/2009, -1/+24That was some good flaming. I am proud to be a member of the Internet...
- hikaruzero, on 11/04/2009, -4/+25*golf clap*
Well done sir. - JohnnySoftware, on 11/03/2009, -0/+19On a more constructive vein, AT&T could have spent the money on a TV commercial ad of their own instead of lawyers, directly reaching their target audience with their message. That message being - if you are correct, AT&T has 2G data network as well and it has a big coverage area - and showing their 2G map with the 3G map.
Most cell phone shoppers do not scrutinize historical legal briefs for witty repartee and and sound legal reasoning.
They do however, see TV commercials. - topcat5, on 11/04/2009, -0/+18Yawn. One former Bell System collection of companies suing another set of former Bell System companies. End result, we all pay more. They should have never been allowed to take over the wireless system in the first place.
- UselessTrivia, on 11/04/2009, -1/+19The Mars corporation is going to sue you for linking the Snickers(tm) brand to a ***** band like Nickelback.
- abehammy111, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16want to get sued for something pointless? there's an ass for that
- xxmjumpman23xx, on 11/04/2009, -3/+18ATT is a ***** joke. Verizon is pointing out 3G coverage and the map shown in the Verizon commercial is basically identical to the ATT 3g coverage map on their own website. Go suck a dick ATT. Spend money making your coverage better, not on frivolous lawsuits.
- LordofShadows, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14You do know that the towers are already all over the place and the companies that own these towers lease them to all cell carriers. Cell tower base stations cost lots of money and AT&T doesnt like to spend money.
- costumemaker, on 11/04/2009, -1/+15But then how could the lawyers make their beamer payments. THINK OF THE LAWYERS YOU HEARTLESS BASTARD!
- Joest23, on 11/03/2009, -2/+16Misleading? Maybe to someone who doesn't know what 3G is. Someone like my grandmother would probably think that that means that AT&T customers don't get cell coverage in most of the country. Is it lying? No, because it clearly says that it's 3G. The only reason that AT&T reaches '296M people' is because their 3G is mostly in areas that are heavily populated.
- ATandT, on 11/04/2009, -0/+14My name is AT&T and I'm a big whiny bitch.
- k8tek, on 11/04/2009, -3/+14Screw AT&T and Alexander Graham Bell. Everybody knows he stole the telephone from Elisha Gray.
- thejynxed, on 11/04/2009, -1/+12I know you are lying out of your ass.
My sister was just there, with her iPhone. No service period, let alone 3G.
Why? Because Denali is a protected wilderness area. No cell towers -anywhere-. There is a single, unpaved road that runs through the entire area designated for sightseeing tours. You can't camp there outside of designated areas, and you can't hike there outside of designated areas, unless you get a special permit from the National Forest Service or National Park Service. Even then you are limited in where you are allowed to go.
Comment buried with prejudice. - pinchduck, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Whiny bitches.
- Velnich, on 11/04/2009, -1/+12Sadly, no. People don't appear to be willing to forgo the jesusphone because Verizon's coverage is better. At least, not enough to make a difference.
- teamgwho, on 11/04/2009, -0/+11Need a distraction for your dog-ass network?
There's an app for that - miquonranger031, on 11/04/2009, -1/+11It's not misleading, though, since the maps are labeled "3G coverage"
- DeathfireD, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10Too bad that map shows "total coverage" and not just 3G. for 3G view you have to click on a state or region to display what city/town's have full 3G coverage.
- derektherock42, on 11/04/2009, -3/+12"All Apple is doing is bringing attention to their weak 3G network."
No, AT&T is. -
