- mykos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+84Kind of an odd decision; the name AT&T instantly turns minds back to the 80s (when their advertising was at its most ubiquitous), while Cingular sounds fresher and newer.
- trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+59HEY GET IT RIGHT...
It's at&t now.
Market research must have said smaller case makes you apear less threatening. - longboarder543, on 10/11/2007, -7/+57I've made up a little image up in MS Paint to show the state of things:

Now they are switching back again. It costs the company approximately $1 Billion to rebrand and they are doing it TWICE.

"AT&T is the T1000 of corporations... no matter how many pieces it's broken into, it always comes back together..." - AriaStar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32Agreed. AT&T sounds so grandma-ish. If they want to appeal to the younger generation, the ones most likely to buy their damned products, they need to appeal to the younger set. The orange balloon-guy thing is more fun than the round blue logo AT&T has. Unless the compromise and make the orange guy blue or something. They need to revamp their strategy here. It'll take more than having the iPhone.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/11/2007, -6/+33gotta work in the iPhone for the extra diggs...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25AT&T reminds me of an old stogy company that has no concept of cool. Kind of like having a phone on the IBM network. Bonehead move to change the name.
- ragamuffin2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Who the hell cares? If you really want to get screwed...and I'm talking majorly screwed, lied to, and cussed at, you need to go with AMP'D.
- KennMac, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Your logic hurts my head.
- ChromaVita, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15It's now American Telephone & Text messaging!
- davidsmero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Make up your damn mind AT&Cingular!
- TriZz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11The orange balloon-guy thing is named "Jack Splat" according to the girl at my formerly named Cingular Wireless store.
- Poovey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Just wait for the wireless telegraph. It's coming, I'm sure of it.

The money was spent on merging two multibillion dollar companies, not just changing the name. reprogramming cell towers, merging databases, training employees, rewriting contracts & TOS, etc etc
the name change from AT&T to Cingular won't cost THAT much (by comparison) - mannymix03, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8good because i'm tire of hearing "cingular is now the new AT&T", if its the new AT&T why not just call it AT&T....
- KidVicious, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10I think an IBM phone would be cool. To me IBM says sleek and businesslike, without any flashy nonsense. I'd go for a phone that had those characteristics.
- icepick314, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8AT&T = American Telephone & Telegraph
where did the telegraph gone to? - cvrefugee, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9More like this:
Pacific Bell Mobile Services
Pacific Bell Wireless
Cingular
AT&T - xstarsprinklesx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I don't care what they call it as long as they don't raise my cell phone bill.
- Pic0, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10@Aeon
what is the government going to do with my phone record?
here it is for the public:
called girlfriend, friends, mom, brother, dad, and school.
oh snap! - mrman5917, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This is what happens when you have a company run by 100 year old reminiscing old people that want to have the old AT&T Ma Bell back. The truth of the matter is, people stopped trusting AT&T and the other former-bell companies a long time ago. AT&T may have brand recognition, but if people don't trust the company then what good does it do?
- davidrools, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5It was actually more like:
Pacific Bell Mobile Services
Pacific Bell Wireless
AT&T Wireless (which wasn't actually part of AT&T Corp. but licensed the name)
Cingular
AT&T
I still use my phone from the AT&T Wireless days so I guess I'll look more up to date than those with all the cingular branded gear. BTW I would have upgraded but I just can't find the right replacement for my Nokia 6820 - centerblack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5lol@longboarder
great picture. lmfao irl. - kolobcreek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5hey remember those signs we told you to take down a few years ago. Well you didn't throw them away did you?
- razrielle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6It already happend to the store in the plaza i worked at this week, i could see the portal to hell opening up inside
- Konrad9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5So, how long till the monopoly gets broken up again?
(disclaimer: I'm just pissed that these ***** CEO's thought that requiring a re-sign of the contract when changing plans was a good idea) - NoctemSaiyaku, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I'm gonna miss the the cingular symbol
- rebirf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I don't know about everyone else but..before the name change never had any dropped calls and I had perfect reception.
Now, I'm ***** lucky if I don't have a dropped call or if I can understand anything being said. - negativefx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5it's "The new at&t"
- atb12688, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It may seem trivial, but the stock symbol "T" is a hot one.
- extraspecial, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Except that isn't what happened at all (not that that stops anyone from posting, apparently).
AT&T was acquired by SBC, mostly for the global network and their experience selling to business customers, and their name/brand (SBC wasn't really known outside of their region, while AT&T was pretty much globally marketable). AT&T was absorbed and generally made to be SBC's bitch. SBC held 60% ownership of Cingular, and BellSouth 40%. SBC (now called AT&T) purchased BellSouth, supposedly for the main purpose of acquiring the remaining ownership of Cingular, to be able to offer one coherent set of services (voice, data, wireless) under one brand name, on one bill, to compete with the cable companies. - taylorhayward, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I have a good idea of how to revitalize your brand... stop sucking.
- tboutcher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4R.I.P Orange Cingular dude

- metafore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4i'm with you.
i thought they were just dropping the name, not calls. :( - shableep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3jesus. just give me wide range wireless internet coverage and i'll use skype or vonage to make my calls. enough of these ***** cellphones, ***** 2 year plans and constant unjustified fees.
- Brennan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I actually liked the Cingular brand name...that little orange balloon thing was pretty cool too.
- A1ius, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2AT&T name sucks!!
- qualish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@ariastar
What is so grandma-ish about "American Telephone & Telegraph"? That is *bleeding* edge right there. - Lazrius, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I went to get a new phone yesterday, and they were filming a video talking about the AT&T wieless customer service and how a rep should treat a customer with respect. He kept screwing up...
- SonicAD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think the situation with the car they sponsor has a LOT to do with them making this move now, as opposed to either earlier or later. Just before last weekend's race, AT&T won an injunction against NASCAR allowing them to replace the Cingular logos with AT&T logos, because the judge presiding over that case believed that not allowing them to change the logos would cause immediate harm to AT&T, and also believed that AT&T would win the case (they're suing NASCAR about not allowing them to change the logos from Cingular to AT&T, because NEXTEL sponsors the series). While it's not over yet, it looks pretty likely AT&T can keep its logos on the #31, so I don't think the timing of this can be a coincidence.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Oh they will, they will...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Oh boy this is gonna be a whopper! It's smashing breakthrough articles like these that will ensure Digg's front page for at least a Pulitzer Prize nomination. I can't believe how few hard-hitting articles covering a company name change one can actually find. Even using google. And a Mac.
- PinkoComrade, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4-.. .- -- -.
... - .-. .- .. --. .... -! - krayzee911, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I didn't think much would change when they changed the name, but since they announced the rebranding, every experience I've had with their customer service and sales people has been abysmal. Cingular used to have great customer service, in my experience, but this "New AT&T" bull has really turned up the suck.
- elhaf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, at least they lost SBC, which officially didn't stand for anything anymore. They were Southwestern bell, but then they bought enough things nationwide before AT&T that it didn't make sense anymore, so they started calling themselves SBC, which like SAT doesn't stand for anything, but was derived from southwestern bell corporation.
- edrift101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Can anyone say monopoly. Didn't we break up Ma Bell for a reason...
Where is the government now? Oh yeah, sippin coffee and counting their money. - elhaf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's funny, because they still have a separate site branching from the cingular site for former AT&T wireless customers. What now?
And if you look at the cingular site, they have AT&T and Apple, rather than at&t & Apple!
http://www.cingular.com/cell-phone-service/welcome/ - retrospect, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I work for Cingular, I will miss Jack :(
I'm not happy with the re-branding, when I think AT&T I think outdated and way too corporate. There are a lot of people here at corporate that still wanted to keep the logo/Cingular brand/and name - but the higher-ups wanted AT&T. -
