- reeder, on 10/10/2007, -4/+78AT&T is a leech on the American people, and the world. It needs to be shattered again, like in '82.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19Oh that dsl that the at&t ceo said no one wanted, humm, maybe its because they dont want you to have it! Its the only thing they have going for them
- iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12i'd like to note this:
when i called to get this when it first came out (the first day it got dugg), i was told the following by the person on the phone at at&t:
1) we have been getting calls about this all day
2) you can not get the $10 DSL if you *are* or *have ever been* an AT&T customer..
3) he's really sorry that he can't offer the $10 dsl, and he understands why im upset because it does not make sense to him either.
--he ended up giving a year of unlimited long distance in US, call waiting, etc and the 24$ dsl package for less than we were paying for phone + dsl to begin with.. we're getting a better deal, but not as good as 10$ dsl a month, and it is for a limited time..
so, if you can't get $10 a month dsl, call and complain! you can still save a bunch of money if you put a little bit of time into giving them a piece of your mind..
in other words; customers who have gotten us this far: bugger off! you have to pay more than people who have never given AT&T a cent! - digichris, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15ATT sux.
- jschaff, on 10/10/2007, -5/+13What are you all talking about? I followed their directions and qualified for the plan. Saw $10 DSL right there on the page. No probems.
That doesn't mean that ATT is not a devil company, just that they are not total liars. - iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7sorry! i meant to digg this one up and my finger betrayed me :(
at&t is at this point like the 8th branch of US gov't.. heh - mrmatchgame, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8AT&T: Hello, can I help you?
Customer: Yes, I like the $10 DSL
AT&T: Yes. Are you at your computer?
Customer: Yes
AT&T: Now go on the internet and sign up for the deal at our website.
Customer: But I HAVE NO INTERNET!!! THATS WHY I'M CALLING!
AT&T: Sorry, There is nothing else I can do, have a nice day.
Customer: But Wait.
*Dial Tone* - dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7AHA! AT&T are lying! I went through the ordering process for their $10/month and it claimed it was available for my address and then THIS:
This promotion is available to business customers only. If you are a residential customer, please call our residential customer service center at 1-877-722-3755 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm CT, or Saturday, 8 am to 5 pm CT to find out about the great residential offers we have available for you.
Error Code: 229 - nullity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Here's step by step instructions that do work: http://dslfor10.com/
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Not everyone needs super-fast Internet. (I'll admit, most Digg users are probably on faster, though). In many areas outside the USA, you have to pay $20-30/month for 256k down/128k up cable. So $10 for 768k is not bad.
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm not or ever have been an AT&T customer and it then claimed this special was for BUSINESS CUSTOMERS ONLY, even though it was available at my address. Lying dirty bastards. This is so much AT&T.
- iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5that is really not terribly slow, for many people.. you say 'poor people' as if you are not a poor person too. just because you choose to waste your money and support monopolies does not mean that you should look down on people who don't..
are you paid by at&t? - dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8726k dsl for $10 is better than 115k $90 isdn that I had 10 years ago. I'm almost tempted to sign up for this $10/month service to see if I really get billed $10/month. More likely it will end up being at least $50/month with all the fees/ charges/ taxes/ contract/ installation/ deposit/ equipment/ POTS line/ required packages, etc...
- PiMPSP, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Holy ***** where does the consumerist come up with this garbage, it's right there on the side bar and right in the middle of the page right below the $14.95 off, but yet they have it as some crazy hidden thing on the at&t site, I went to it and found it just fine, ran through the steps, cant qualify though obviously, I live in Canada.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5My mother in law just got on the $10 DSL plan and compared to the dial up she used to have (usually ~22k thanks to her ***** phone lines) 768k (which is pretty much what she gets) is amazing!
- chickenrob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4so how do you qualify? I never even saw the words "View More Internet Services'. in the middle of the page..
- iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5it does..
but like, it was just reformed! it will take.. awhile..
http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/8818/atthistoryys1.png - manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Seniors who don't need super-fast Internet because all they do is browse a little and check email, not download videos?
- XStatic, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Entered in a phone number for a neighbor that had AT&T local and never had DSL service before. The $10 plan was just as easy to choose as all the rest, Same fonts for the price, same description. The $10 did not have the promotions link as it doesn't qualify for the $75 cash back or $150 if you switch from cable. And it had a 1 year commitment. Certainly not hidden though.
I suspect these people don't qualify for it as they have either had DSL in the past or don't have AT&T local service. Perhaps making a switch to AT&T local and getting $10 DSL at the same time is a difficult process... - chrismgtis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4For 99.9% of the public, the bandwidth offered by the $10 DSL is FAR more than enough. Anyone that says otherwise, has no clue what they are talking about.
- endersshadow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I _was_ a new AT&T customer and was told that I can't get it because I live in an "irregular area." I LIVE IN DALLAS! IT'S FOUR HOURS FROM THEIR HQ IN SAN ANTONIO!
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I sent AT&T a nasty email under "Contact Us"
I wanted to try the $10/month dsl promotion. After finding out my address was offered, I was then informed its FOR BUSINESS CUSTOMERS ONLY. Why wasn't this simple fact displayed before I wasted 5 minutes answering questions?
This is the AT&T I have always remembered. Even people I know who work at AT&T claim its evil. At least it shows. - iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4me :)
- JoeTech, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2Just signed up my girlfriend's parents last week. Done and done, cheap and fast (enough for them).
Here's the deal... it's only avail to non AT&T high speed customers in the last 12 months as well as anyone who's in a DSL serviceable area. Note they've had ATT phone service for years, but again not DSL.
Go here:

Got the self-install kit in less than 2 days, they were up & running within the week. While you will NOT find me touting that AT&T is a fine corporation that we should all stop trashing... I will say this:
They offered the $10 service, we bought the service, and now they pay 10 buk for DSL.
So... what exactly is the problem again? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Consumerist.com's article are getting on my nerve since quite some time.
I like the spirit of the site, but its like an aggregator for everyone having trouble with a retail store, even if its because they are just clueless. - boiker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4ATT&T is the T-1000. Destroy it all you might, it'll just re-coalesce.
- iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i forgot i can't post img tags on digg..

methinks you are paid by At&T?
I was able to find the inet page..
'just as easy to choose as all the rest',
'same fonts for the price, same description'
I don't know what page you are looking at, but i just took this screenie of what i see.. - sheepster, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3i must be a total moron..but i can't find it! can somebody link me!?
- dattaway, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2But I don't have an AT&T phone number, which is required. I don't want a land line phone. That doesn't make it $10 anymore and might make Time Warner seem cheap in comparison.
- iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3it's plenty fast enough for many people. when was the last time that you tested with a 768 connection?
you can watch youtube and stuff on it just fine... i can see it being a problem if you download lots of media files and expect them to be done really really fast... but i don't do that and don't need to pay twice as much just so that i *could* download big stuff faster. ... .
this reminds me o f another argument..
'window sucks. and you even have to pay for it'
'whatever. windows is great. and it's free - you can download it anywhere!'
lol - iliketoprogram, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3are you paid by at&t?
it's not simple. the fact that you can even find it on their site now at all is due to the efforts of people like those who wrote this article.
if you have nothing better to do that make rude comments to people who are actually doing something worthwhile with their time,
maybe you should consider going out and getting yourself an education - JerodSlay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2except for Japan, where they've got 100Mb connections.... Ohhhh japan.......
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4My mom.
- maksidaa, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i called them to get the $10 internet about a week ago after spending hours looking for the deal on-line at my in-laws house b/c at the time i didn't have my internet connected. i even had my in-laws help me look for the $10 deal on the at&t website for about an hour and still couldn't find it. we used old links that had been posted on other forums and the links were dead. seems that at&t makes it real easy when they get bad publicity and then change it up to keep people from signing up. anyways, finally called at&t and asked to be set up with the $10 deal and the operator said i had to do it on-line. thanks. she absolutely refused to sign me up for it, but did offer to sign me up for any other dsl offer at&t had. no thanks. went back to looking on the website, and after another hour or so i called at&t back and got a different operator who didn't brush me off like the first one. instead he said, "um, sure thing, just remind me first what that offer entailed, i don't remember" as if he didn't know what i was talking about. after reciting the offer i had seen on digg.com and some other forums the guy says, "one moment while i look to see if i can set you up with that". 5 minutes later he comes back and starts to ask why i need the dsl connection. i told him i just want to check my e-mail and connect to my schools website to download assignments. he then wants to know where i go to school, what i'm majoring in, what i'll do when i graduate, etc. i finally told him i just would like to sign up for the $10 internet, that's it. he runs through all the other dsl options and why i should sign up for them cuz i could watch videos or whatever, and i reiterated that i just wanted $10 dsl. he puts me on hold again for 5 minutes to "check the details" and then comes back and finally processes my information. it was 5 days before they would connect my line, and then another day before they "officially processed" the order so that my dsl would work. it works fine now, even downloads movies fairly quickly, but it sure sucked trying to jump through the hoops for it. good luck y'all.
- bridow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i asked the live help 4 times and they all closed the chat with me. i guess thats in their handbook...
- gr8edchz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I actually thought, why not, I'll take a look. I could do much because I'm not an existing subsriber. After a dozen screens or so trying order a phone line and then find $10.00 DSL it all ended for me here:
"Due to technical problems, we are unable to process your order online at this time. Please contact us at 1-800-310-2355 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, 8:30 am to 5pm."
Oh well. I wasn't actually wanting to complete the order but I looked because I'm sick of paying too much to Comcast since my 1yr trial expired. But, I'll have to see what else can be had I suppose. - cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What's so big is the effort AT&T is apparently making to hide the option from potential customers.
I'd bet they lose more money with that tactic, than they would on making it easily available, and then having easy upgrade options to higher speeds (and higher rates) once the new DSL customer gets a taste of the service. - doctorcaligari, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I was trying to get my mom signed up for this and about went crazy. For an Eastern NC number, the AT&T site kept giving error messages with a number to call. The number didn't work from her Bellsouth phone, nor would it work from my cell. The Bellsouth site kept giving much higher prices than the rest of the AT&T system. Finally, I found the "Term Contract" and signed up my mom for $10 a month. We did have to buy a modem though. But at least she has internet now that will let her do normal stuff without taking hours.
- Nighthawke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's there, it's labeled as a promotional. Answer no to their questions about being a previous subscriber to their services then it'll ask you for their phone #. It didn't let me get past it due to the frigging fact that I'm not within their range for DSL, the *****!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Where do you live that you can get both AT&T and Verizon DSL?
- tony23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Damn, where's Reagan when you need him?
- br0ken1128, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yikes..
I pay the same for business class roadrunner and I'm getting 10mb down and 1.5mb up .. DSL doesn't compete well with what I get currently, which is ok because DSL isn't available in my neighborhood.. - nullity, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Trese instructions should work: http://dslfor10.com/
- tony23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't usually play grammar cop, but might I suggest that you use CAPITAL letters and maybe a carriage return now & then? It would make a longer comment like yours much easier to read.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"When whiney 13 yr olds who can't figure out our web site call, hang up so you can free yourself for real callers"
- I think it's a sound policy. - skater9269, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It took my friend and I 3 hrs. of searching the web and talking to machines/worthless people who hang up on you. to finally find the right section to sign up his grandmother for the 10 dsl the page said 19.99 but then after all the info was filled in it changed to 10 dollars. But at least you feel like you accomplished something. Right??
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So either you're in the middle of nowhere or you're getting ripped off. Which one is it?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think the offer is limited by region. I've tried going to the site using an anonymous proxy, and it wouldn't let me through.
In CT, the offer is clearly available online. $10/month for the lowest Internet if you aren't a DSL customer. A couple years ago, when I first signed up with SBC (not AT&T), the offer was 14.99 and 19.99 was the regular price. I have since bumped up to 19.99 for a 1.5/384 connection. - ejfisher, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It worked for me. I did this link. It was there this morning, not there this afternoon, and then there again later.
