- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31A company that specializes in information delivery joining forces with a content company? Why, it's just like AOL Time Warner! What could possibly go wrong?
- BigBunion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Yahoo definitely needs some help- Google is eating their lunch. AT&T, however, itsn't the help that Yahoo needs. Old-school compaines buying new-tech companies rarely (never?) ends well.
- crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22If at&t buys out Yahoo, I bet they'll rebrand it to at&t.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Yoda of Borg are we. Futile, resistance is. Assimilated, you will be.
...that was rather unrelated. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Well I've had a email account there for a very long time, but if they go AT&T on me, then it's just going to be another dump box for my spam. Like hotmail.

This is F'd up! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The NEW AT&T. As if anybody forgot how bad the old one sucked.
- sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Is there anything these ***** aren't trying to control?
Hey, maybe it will turn out for the best and they will drown in their massive debt. - darthhelmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Once again the Sith will rule the galaxy. And there will be. Peace.
AT&T. The monopoly to end all monopolies. Sucking in Apple as well.
This company was the ruler of telecommunications for decades. Do we really think they would go quietly into the night.
They disappeared from the cellular industry, only to reemerge and consume the largest cell phone company in America. Their appetite apparently will not end there.
If they gain a monopoly or even a majority of telecommunications control again, I fear a breach in freedom of speech on the internet as well as on any other digital or analog venue.
Should people stand by and watch this beast rear its ugly head again? Is uniform distribution of telecommunications resources good for us all.
This may sound alarmist, but oh well. Consider:
Wal-Mart is eating up the retail world like a virus.
Windows is now trying to hold its grip on the PC software world.
All internet traffic in the world moves through telecommunications and cable lines, whether we like it or not.
For one company to hold the reigns to this spider web of information portals is to place control of global information in the hands of one "power"
This is inherently dangerous.
One large telecom controlling the majority of internet, cellular, and telecommunications traffic can only mean one thing.
Censorship of all who resist its policies.
What happened to the laws restricting monopolies.
Have the political and corporate operatives of today, found a way to circumvent these edicts?
Global information controlled by one power leads to global information censored by one power.
Where lies your freedom now? - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6But how many Tier 1 providers actually OWN such a big property as Yahoo!? Maybe AOL, and that's it. AT&T would end up on both sides of Net Neutrality with MAJOR players to fight whatever agenda they want. There could be a potentially mutual gain had by both companies.
- wheresmysocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What is this Borg you speak of? I, as a typical member of digg, have never heard this term. Sounds Swedish.
- troye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4AT&T can go to hell. I will stop using yahoo if AT&T owns it.
- rofflcopterr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what better way to control your tubes do you have than just buying them all?
- ptFoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4All of Yahoo's products are going to get the royal "AT&T" ***** treatment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5First Cingular, now this... I thought they fixed AT&T when they broke it up the first time in the 90's
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Great. AT&T Answers. Only what they want you to know...
- Erasmus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@orp
You got me, I missed that passage.
I too lack faith in the FCC and our current admin, but they are not THAT stupid. The one thing these guys understand is perception. That's how they got into their positions of power. They understand that allowing something like this would lead to a backlash against them. Then again it might be something they push through around Oct. 08.
Thank God the opposition party controls Congress. Unfortunately, if they win the White House we, the lowly commoners, will be in a similar position as we were pre-Nov. 1 party control is bad for the people.
On a side note - I would like to rant on the writers of this NEWS article. They do state that it is believed that at&t has considered purchasing Yahoo!, yet they site no source for that assertion. Where do these people get their journalism degrees from, the back of cereal boxes? - orp2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What about this, from the article:
"Underscoring the shift in the balance of power between the two partners, AT&T is believed to have even considered buying Yahoo, whose share price has been under pressure for some time." - devoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A dysfunctional portal for a dysfunctional phone company; match made in heaven.
- Erasmus1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, someone in the thread actually read the entire article. The article is about at&t telling Yahoo! they want to renegotiate their current partnership agreement on DSL service.
I don't believe the FCC would let at&t purchase a controlling interest in Yahoo! let alone buy the whole enchilada, at least not until the whole network neutrality issue is decided. The idea that at&t would buy a portal only lends more weight to the argument FOR internet regulation. - sonicice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2All around the world....
- Fairly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. Buy Yahoo.
2. Oust Jerry Yang.
3. Put Jerry Yang in prison.
4. Support all victims of Jerry Yang. - chkmate21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No way man, Yahoo is super cool, if AT&T buys it, it will ruin it. Yahoo! must survive this. By the way they aint doing that bad, in fact they're doing super! So why all of a sudden this thing arise?
By the way AT&T while you're dreaming, you might wanna consider buying Microsoft and Google also? - RyanChappell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The future could be this, wireless:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Tech_Firms_Push_to_Use_TV_Airwaves_for_Internet_Cable_PhoneCo_watch_Warily - understudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm inclined to believe AT&T would mark the death of the Yahoo brand.
Besides, people loathe AT&T. I love Yahoo Mail Beta, but I'd stop using it if AT&T took over.
_ - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4haha, funny you say that... I've been having trouble with google talk today.
- crash128, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Understandable. Stupid, yes, but I think att just wants to provide content for their small screens (cell phones).
Someone above mentioned aol/tw - ok, that's the big one. Let me chime in with comcast thinking of buying disney a couple of years ago. Seems like pipes generally want to own pipe-content as well.
Unfortunately, this never goes well for the pipe companys. My prediction - not gonna happen. att been through way too much economic trauma recently (I believe they've laid off perhaps a billion people in the last 20 years). Buying cingular was probably a good move. I think they're too smart to merge with yahoo. Shoot, even I know this stuff. - kaiserh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AT&T did such a great job when they bought NCR last time :) This smells like Time Warner and AOL all over again.
- Jubalicious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@nessup
I believe the reason that nobody said that is because this article has nothing to do with anything remotely close to being worthy of a russian reversal joke... at all... ever... not to mention your joke didn't even make a modicum of sense whatsoever... Yahoo buys me?
Please try harder next time... on second thought, don't. - strangerzero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Man, they are just like the Borg.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg_(Star_Trek) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nicely Said!
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Normally I am skeptical of merges and acquisitions but with AT&T making a big deal out of their U-Verse service I feel like Yahoo could actually give them a huge boost. Imagine if U-Verse includes seamless integration with Yahoo Videos, Flickr, Yahoo Mail, etc? They would have a pretty compelling set of services/software.
- iandouglas736, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, they fixed them from being a monopoly. Now that there are other players on the market, like Verizon as one example, AT&T can re-merge its split-up company again, I guess with more thought as to overall economic viewpoint of being a monopoly again?
- orp2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Erasmus1
Looks like at least two people didn't read the article. And you have a little too much faith in the FCC. Especially during the current administration. And especially since AT&T/SBC Communications is owned and run by a bunch of good ol' boys from Texas, well schooled in Karl Rovian slight of hand, and back room deals. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1investing 101 buy low sell high
- understudy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with what you've said. Consider starting a campaign against AT&T with the Department of Justice Antitrust Division. Seriously.
_ - sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From the article:
"The deals are thought to contribute as much as $800m in total to Yahoo's top line each year, according to Mr Kessler at S&P.
Under the original deal, SBC Communications – now renamed AT&T – and Yahoo shared broadband DSL revenues.
The agreement is reportedly generating more than $200m a year for Yahoo."
Hmm.... - hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they do this, then I will think hard about jumping ship to Google --- AT&T and their wiretapping antics have no place in my life.
- bemckenna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MSNBC says NOTHING about AT&T considering buying Yahoo! in this article.
- orp2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Erasmus1
Yeah, typical net journalism. You just say whatever you want to get people to come to your site.
Here's to saner times. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well
I might as well stop checking A&TT Flickr
And deleate that old A&TT Mail service of mine
and AT&T.icio.us - kevnaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2trudat!!! flickr is the best of its kind.
- btipling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1'Once considered buying Yahoo...' is what it says.
Buried as in accurate. - RyanChappell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Consider starting a campaign against AT&T"
What about the rest of the CARTEL? Verizon, Cilinglar, sprint? Price fixing! internet! - drzeus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Eating their lunch? Hardly. Look at projects like Pipes to see that Yahoo is still relevant to even us geeks.
- jonnyq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, AT&T is falling out of the tree of obsoletion breaking every branch on the way down?
- elk1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1More likely, they rebrand all AT&T services as Yahoo. The apple iPhone will only be available with a 2 year Yahoo mobile contract.
- sm3287, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Is this a good/bad thing for Yahoo!? Yahoo is still my homepage since 98, Never caught on to the whole Google thing, the only Google thing i find usefull is their Picasa....
