- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+49Digg needs some comments here, I borrow one from Engadget:
"I don't get it... 600 USD for the 8 GB model?
Correct me if I don't add numbers correctly but: iPhone with plan + early termination fee + 1 month contract = 199 + 175 + 70 = 444 USD.
It's legal to break a contract, right?" - lfroker, on 03/19/2009, -0/+27Welcome to business.
Guess what, that $28 steak you order at restaurants is most likely worth less that $7 in food cost. - pipedreaming, on 03/19/2009, -1/+25$599? It's cheaper to buy an iPhone with a contract and pay the ETF after 30 days.
- Miamifan1354, on 03/19/2009, -2/+18Looks like they may be trying to get as many people to buy a 3g as quickly as possible. Hopefully that means a new one will be out soon.
- mshilling, on 03/19/2009, -2/+15I dont even see how this can be a popular article...everyone needs service, why would you spend $600 on a phone that you can get for $125 with a contract that you are GOING TO NEED ANYWAY?
I never understood the people who are scared of cell phone contracts. Just terminate early if you need to. It's still cheaper - straxxus, on 03/19/2009, -0/+9ITS A TRAP
- dagamer34, on 03/19/2009, -0/+9They can only ask for it back if it's within the 30 days, in which case no ETF is paid.
- Jhonka, on 03/19/2009, -0/+8$199 phone
$175 ETF
$70 1 month plan
$36 activation fee
~$30 in "other charges" and random bs on your bill.
$510
Still lower. - Dou6, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7Those are REDICULOUS prices. I got my original iphone 8GB for $399 out the door at Apple, which still felt pretty expensive. I promptly unlocked it, and have been using it on tmobile ever since.
- paidhima, on 03/19/2009, -0/+7Nope.
- deadasdisco, on 03/19/2009, -1/+8i feel the same way. back in the day, i used to work for at&t sales, and found that old people hate contracts. they could be with at&t for 5 years running and if you ask em to sign another year contract they'd freak out.
- yunus, on 03/19/2009, -1/+7This would allow you to use a service other than ATT.
- brundlefly76, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5I really don't know anyone who has purchased an iPhone 3G and went back to another phone.
Its an easy decision for ATT - charge more up front for someone who isnt going anywhere anyway. - digjam, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6ATT is still not over it... they still think everyone out there wants a iPhone....
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -1/+6You don't "need" a contract, no one does.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5Whats the catch?.... Oh I see
- dagamer34, on 03/19/2009, -0/+5That number ignores R&D plus paying to support Apple's staff. It's still a pretty decent margin though.
- wolfing, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4yes but you have to pay $600 for that hooker
- atmenterprises, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4And that would be fraudulent.
- CoD4, on 03/19/2009, -1/+5then about 50 bucks if you don't know how to unlock it yourself
- mshilling, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4True, but are the masses thinking this way? Most people who buy an Iphone dont buy it to use on another service...they probably dont even know what jailbreaking or unlocking is. They just want to have the "cool phone".
Contracts were good when cell phones were getting started, but now they dont do anyone any good. - tomz17, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Of course!
- cawpin, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4It most assuredly is.
- Taiyoryu, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4There's this thing called overhead that makes the price of a product higher than its material costs.
- crashingechelon, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Ok I have to ask about this pricing because when I went to Apple when the iPhone 3G came out the price of the phones for the unsubsidized price was $399 for the 8GB and $499 for the 16GB. Now they're saying on AT&T site that each phone is $100 more than originally priced?
If you want more proof, I had to get my iPhone 3G replaced in November since it got accidently destroyed in October. I put in a claim with my credit card company and they reimbursed me the funds. So I talked to Apple about what had happened and they authorized me to buy a new 16GB phone at a $200 discount which brought the price down to $299 for a new 16GB phone.
Either I missed something here with AT&Ts pricing or they increased the cost of the phone by $100. - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Actually its just sex
- Jhonka, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4yeah, totally REDICULOUS...
- retrofitme, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Lame. Now get rid of the *required* dataplan and that will be news.
- dagamer34, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4Not everyone lives in the USA. European carriers all use the same frequency for 3G.
- mikesown, on 03/19/2009, -0/+4You forgot the $36 activation fee.
- byronm, on 03/19/2009, -1/+4Which would piss all those buyers off..
I Don't get it.
< rant >
Aren't we in a tough economy? People are still willing to spend this much for a phone? I mean, people are seriously going to considering locking into to almost 3,000 dollars worth of commitment for an electronic device?
< / rant > - leetleo, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3Does this mean that I can take my iphone 3g that I'm currently using with t-mobile and bring it to AT&T, or are they still going to force me to buy a phone and contract so that I can get service?
- wolfing, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3and the 'apple tax' is not included either
- Grazzit, on 03/19/2009, -5/+8I'm sorry but the iphone is the most ridiculously over priced phone on the market.
- inactive, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3"Aren't we in a tough economy? People are still willing to spend this much for a phone?"
Yes. Believe it or not, your average person buys a lot of ***** that they don't need.
Most people don't have much of anything saved up, which is why you see these spiked foreclosures when people lose their jobs. Everyone should easily have 6-12 months of backup on their necessary bills each month, but instead few do.. mainly because they're too busy buying ***** they don't need. - byronm, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3@imkidred
I was replying to the OPs comments about prices falling because a new device may be coming out. IE people would be pissed if they bought a 3g today only to find out a phone 10x better will be out tomorrow. In a way, its inevitable but at least apple could be honest if thats their intentions. - imkidred, on 03/19/2009, -0/+3Piss off what buyers? They haven't updated the iphone in over a year, it's past it's update cycle. I am waiting to for the next release to buy a phone. If you know Apple, you know when and when not to buy. If you don't know Apple, then buy when you are ready to buy and be happy. I fail to see how anyone would be pissed off if they want the phone now.
As for your rant, Yes,yes and yes. - ultrafez, on 03/19/2009, -1/+4. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . / Yes, ITS A TRAP!\

Talk about a huge margin... - FredFredrickson, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Because $100 a month is absurd, especially when you're already paying for internet services at home.
- bobbknight, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2Is the current IPhone subsidized by AT&T?
- inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+2Knicks suck, Yankees suck, Mets suck -- Krypton sucks.
- Kazakaz, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2The actual retail price is $599/$699. AT&T still subsidises $100 of the price even if you're not eligable for an upgrade, that way they can still require a 2 year contract.
- kajoob, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2It most certainly is. And when it's cheaper to breach the contract than to fulfill the terms, it's called an "efficient breach". That's what we've got here. You've gotta be a moron to pay $600 up front for a 8gb model which isn't even unlocked!!
- paidhima, on 03/19/2009, -0/+2Untrue, you actually can get caught whether it's a business or not. If you claim that the phone was stolen, a carrier generally disables the IMEI/ESN for further use. If you turn around and sell that phone on Ebay, you are committing fraud by selling a device that (technically) is stolen property - even if you were the one that reported it stolen. Additionally, if you place the claim for a stolen phone with an insurance company when the phone is not stolen, you are in fact committing insurance fraud. That's not just a policy thing, that's flat out illegal. Finally, if the carrier or insurance company asks you to sign an affidavit or report it to the police, you are then making a false deposition to law enforcement, which is an additional crime.
Sorry, but either way you put it you're committing at least one crime by doing what you're doing. You can use "b-b-but the carrier!" all you want, you're still retarded. - MScrip, on 03/19/2009, -1/+2I never understood that. Why have a web browsing phone that you can only get on the web at a WIFI hotspot? Data plans are the best part of an advanced phone like that... data everywhere.
I guess you could get a cheap prepaid flip phone and an iPod Touch instead. :) - inactive, on 03/19/2009, -2/+3Apple Sucks.
- sparkey, on 03/19/2009, -0/+1Gizmondo?!? Really? I hope they put that in as a joke.
- m0deth, on 03/19/2009, -2/+3yet another iStumble for the iJunk
