That is what activism is all about. I left AT&T 9 months ago after I found out they gave, with no hesitation, the Bush administration my personal call logs!
So if you dig this story, then be a REAL American, and cancel your iPhone subscription with AT&T!
Otherwise you are all just a bunch of arm chair patriots no better than the ignorant slugs who voted for Bush, and wasting all our time with this BS! - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -16/+52AT&T is an arm of the US government. As are Microsoft, Halliburton, and various military contractors. America is not truly a capitalist or Democratic nation, it is an Oligarchy.
But what can you do? I think we can at least start by ensuring the continuing freedom of the internet. At least they still do not have full control of this yet. Your mainstream media? FORGET IT! - zweben, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22I want the iPhone eventually and I have AT&T now but... i'm probably not going to stick with them anymore after this and the whole spying thing.
Screw them. - digichris, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24My contract with AT&T is up in a few months. Hopefully google will have a free cell service up by then =] But seriously, AT&T can blow me if they think I'm renewing my contract.
- neuralzen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14It's not like they are the only ones doing it. They are simply the only ones that got caught with their pants down by a whistle blower...
- slunktoday, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Simple solution - bands shouldn't play shows that are sponsored by AT&T (or other mega-corporate sponsors).
- EricCiccone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Yeah, I went to Bonnaroo this year, and AT&T hosted videos of the concerts, and out of all the anti-war songs Michael Franti sang, not one was shown. I didn't notice it until I read this article.
- Lagstorm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Ok you need to move your keyboard over 2 inches so we can make out what you're fanboying about.
- wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Good article, Love the Graphic of the AT&T logo as the death Star. Very appropriate.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10I like how you put Microsoft in front of Halliburton. Whatever Microsoft has done (or AT&T for that matter), it really can't compare to a war-profiteering corrupt company such as Halliburton.
- TonightTonight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7No. Unless, the band makes it their singular message.
- diablo75, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7WTF?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8L O S E R
Just because you never had the mental capacity to understand art, and had a perpetual feeling of feeling left out your whole life, doesnt mean you have a right to discredit talented and gifted humans who have made a difference in this world! - 2reflective, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Absolutely correct. We have been brought up from cradle to grave to believe the mainstream media, but every day we are proving that they just cannot be trusted to give us the real truth. Wake up people!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You know Michael! That is cool to see some Digg users who know his music. I spent many years on the road playing music at the same festivals and events as Michael. He is a true patriot!
Ohh and to the poster who said AT&T is the only one to get caught with their pants down. The fact of the matter is that AT&T is the ONLY telecommunication company to willingly give customer call logs and personal web browsing data to the department of justice. The other big Teloco sites all challenged the Admin!
AT&T is forever grateful for the bail out they received years before from Uncle Sam and will happily violate your privacy any day! - wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6you have a very appropriate avatar my friend. You are clearly one of the bad guys.
- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Of course the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment only applies to the government, I wouldn't have it any other way. But that doesn't mean consumers have to take it. In a capitalistic society, the consumer would be the most educated -- he would then boycott from an oppressive company. For this case, it would be much more affective if the bands themselves refuse to perform on any AT&T sponsored/broadcasted shows.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If I were working in AT&T PR, I might be slitting my wrists right about now.
- alphacoder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What's really hilarious is that AT&T has all these commercials that show people all over the world using AT&T! In other words, their imagery of diversity of cultures and users would suggest the parallel of a diversity of views and this contrasts with their apparent censorship.
Between this mistaken editing (according to their corporate PR...ahem!) and the attempted spy room coverup, I'm in amazement when I hear people still patronizing them for things like long distance and cellular service. While I understand that there are some instances where people may not have control over their support of AT&T, I'm sure there are situations where people do have choice.
If you really are concerned about NSAT&T, simply make a goal to wean yourself from their service by a specific date. Then, when talking to your colleagues, neighbors and friends, explain to them why you don't support NSAT&T. But especially for Digg users, this should also include writing to Apple and explaining why you will never buy an iPhone.
It still is within everyone's rights to decide who they support and also informing people and corporations about the reasons. - wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4you mean "Their New AT&T Message"
- archimago42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I believe it is called sarcasm.
- wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I know what you mean, but damn you made it sound sexy!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You are stupid. I really pity the world you see through your two eyes.
- surfing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3jdaniel284 celebrates Michael Bolton's entire catalog.
- archimago42, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Actually Verizon tried to fight giving up records. I'm not sure how successful they ended up being but at least they tried. You and your excuses are the problem.
- carpespasm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you can, it's called pop. it's music for when you want to shut off your brain and just go with the beat and the lyrics which don't really mean much but are repeated enough that they stick in your head.
music is about expression. it can revolve around anger, love, sorrow, politics, religion, or whatever. listen to what you want. - acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Care to show me where people on digg are being 'happy and smug' about this Fairness Doctrine garbage? Can you actually do that, because I think you're full of *****. Care to prove me wrong?
- Ugoff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well our family has had it's falling out with T-Mobile and we'll be looking for a new company to do business with and we'll be sure to avoid AT&T. Yeah they might have the iPhone but no thanks. Not even the iPhone is worth all the wiretapping and censorship. I hope others will do the same.
- archimago42, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Duh, every major news channel and publication does this already by selectively airing what they feel like airing as newsworthy. Wake up. You should probably be more concerned when people who claim it is their job to report the truth censor it instead of when a concert that a company is paying for is censored. Concerts don't claim to be unbiased. What AT&T did raises some questions sure...the same questions you should have been asking for years now that people seem to want to ignore.
- sabach, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As I have stated before (and been buried for saying so) this is easily solved. Pearl Jam and other popular bands need to stop working for scumbag corps like AT&T and listeners need to stop supporting artists that continue to live in the pocket of said corps.
- mbelleghem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4You should keep a diary of your thoughts on what's happening to your country. When you're older, you'll find it very enlightening - and perhaps a bit disturbing.
- delgotit99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Your ears wouldn't have. Go to concerts!!!
- thejokker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2but if i am an owner of the company via stock purchase, i would like to know to what extent they censor performances.
- uxb123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately, this can be the only game in town at times, at least on the large scale, not to mention that the bands think they are making a difference. I'm sure it is not disclosed to them that they are going to be censored for making political speech. Is it better to shun the platform, that is going to be occupied by those who "tow the line"? If the bands didn't play these shows, we would not be aware of the censorship to begin with.
- thejokker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Action? huh?
Why cant we just sit here and post witty comments on stories? Is that the same thing? - thejokker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2wait enix, you want to listen to pearl jam without the political views? what does that sound like exactly?
- Darthcactaur, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why can't I just read these posts without having to suffer through your opinion?
Its free speech; when you disagree you're allow to say when and where you want -If that's not the case: Who should determine where and when we're allowed to exercise our rights? - digbird, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you really think all the profanity you use is going to hurt my feelings, make me think "hey, he's right, or make anyone else think "hey, he's right"?
- acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Except, of course, when they've built their business with our tax dollars and control the majority of communications infrastructure in our nation.
Get your head out of your ass, please. - acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I just double-posted by clicking 'submit comment' one time...this site is broken, don't blame seethispass for it. Though you can sure blame him for being a choad.
- acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When a maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan censors broooaaaaaaaaaaadcasts.......
*gags* - acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you mean satire.
- acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Got any links to back up your claims, or are you just telling us all you like to pay way too much money for concert tickets?
- JackHorner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1AT&T are spying on us right now lol. When are we going to do something about the state of this ***** country? We need to get some balls and take it back. We deserve it, we pay for it, everything should be OUR decision. ***** these corporations that think they have any business deciding what we should and should not hear. WHEN ARE WE GOING TO STAND UP FOR OURSELVES!
- pauliephonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm thinking Pisstake!
- acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1So what? Do you think the 'free market' is going to fix this problem? You know, this problem with the nation's largest communications company that controls the majority of the infrastructure? Riiiiiiight.
Like Lily Tomlin once said on SNL: "We're the phone company....we don't have to care." - Thex1138, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1They must have used there juicy NARUS box to siphon the data..
Just as the network was overloaded with new iPhone subscription we can overload it again with contract cancellations...
..and maybe it will let Apple know whom not to get into bed with next time. - misfit410, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Whats Hilarious is that you morons can't understand the concept that AT&T can edit anything they like in a program they are presenting, if you don't like it go watch a concert presented by someone else.
- acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's because your opinion is based upon your utter cluelessness. You're clearly unaware of your history, else you'd know about things like the old "Mary, Mary, quite contrary" nursery rhyme being about Mary Tudor and her general dislike of Protestants - if you honestly think that art hasn't had a political twist on it until only recently, you need to wake the ***** up and get your head out of whereever it's jammed.
http://www.rhymes.org.uk/index.htm - acceptab1euname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for the dupe post, digg - maybe k-rose needs to lay off this lame pownce nonsense and get back to making his first site work %&$*ing properly.
