- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -5/+36AT&T sucks.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -7/+34no one has, or ever will be, "pwn3D," you just look stupid saying it.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Damn ... should have taken that job in the Apple Store ...
- sirbeta, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Except by replying the way you did, you revealed you in fact did care. You pwn3D yourself.
- VicHislop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I worked for AT&T Wireless (which was then not affiliated with AT&T) when Cingular acquired them. They immediately went to work in reducing our benefits across the board including: increasing the cost of health care (my cost actually went from $0 per paycheck to close to $80), reducing tuition reimbursement benefits, reducing flexibility in scheduling (the office was right across from a university, so this was very important) and reducing the actual hourly wages for evening employees. This sort of thing, whether true or not, is certainly believable from this company.
They do not care about their employees in the long-term sense and certainly turned the office where I worked from a very enjoyable place to a one of extreme discontent with constant turnover. That's the way they want to do business and they get no respect at all from me. - seaner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Well it was Steve Jobs that gave them to them, if AT&T has a decent CEO maybe they would get free iPhones.
- Cytranic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7On the flip side, my buddy works at apple, and all employees got a FREE iphone.
- gwhardyiv, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9After a promising start, The Consumerist has devolved into a whining piece of *****. Stop posting their crappy sob stories, please.
- jsayreallen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I work for at&t. They have been explicit from the beginning that the employee discount does not apply to the iPhone. Many of us (including me) have purchased them regardless of that fact.
- lougoose, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6A communications company lied...what's new?
- tyfin85, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Que the slew of people saying AT&T sucks and their cell phone providers are better; people back their cell carriers like they're in the gang nowadays.
- gwhardyiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Oh, I done did that already.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Jealous? I just wish i had decent coverage at my house. It sucks having my phone lose connection, when people I know with verizon have full bars. Only three more months before the contract expires, though!
- shaun3000, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Sorry, but I think they guy just misunderstood everything he was told. My fiancee is a project manager at, "The new at&t," and knew for a good month that they wouldn't get any sort of discount on the iPhone. Her friends all confirmed this, it was public knowledge. The memos that were posted online were the same ones she and all of her coworkers received. It was abundantly clear there wouldn't be any discounts, this guy just didn't listen. The people who work in the Wireless stores are on the same level as used car salesmen. They say anything and everything to make a sale.
- franklink44, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Automatically dugg down because the comment contained "pwn3D". Stop the insanity and speak english.
- PiGuy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Sounds like he should have made sure the discount was explicitly written in his contract before he signed.
It's funny that he only NOW bitches about having spent $600 on a phone. - MonkeyFit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'd buy one for 10 cents. Do you realize what kind of projects you could do with the components from it (ie, touchscreen)? Of course, that's also assuming you could buy it for 10 cents without a calling plan.
- stilesja, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This wasn't a case of ignoring the internal company memos about no iPhone discounts. Same thing happened to me, except I work for IBM. We get nice discount on ATT service and I went to see the iPhone and was assured that when they said no discount on iPhone or associated service, the associated service meant the $20/month data plan I had to buy. I'd still be getting a discount on my regular rate plan.
I called in when I got my bill same as the orignal poster trying to find out what the deal was and they basically told me that Apple's deal with AT&T was that no discounts on any account with an iPhone. I told them that was crazy and asked "Does motorola tell you how much you charge for service? LG? Samsung? I can understand no discounts on hardware or even data plans, but I've got the same minutes I had before. My iPhone has nothing to do with the rate plan."
The best I can figure is that AT&T is actually paying Apple for the privilege of selling the iPhone so instead of subsidizing the cost to the consumer, they actually take money every month and send it to apple and your iPhone isn't even paid off until your contract is up. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4There always seems to be an 'employee' for every specific story just at the nick of time too
- phuqju, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4THIS TOTAL *****!!! I work at AT&T and we were never told that we can get a discount on the iPhone. A few weeks before launch we were told that we, as employees, will never receive a discount on this phone.
- tb1020, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3The author of this article is either the biggest liar or the stupidest employee we have at AT&T. Please tell me you are so angry you are quitting!! We need to eliminate morons in our workforce. We were all told multiple times that there would be no discounts for this phone.
- fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"OVer 90% of people who love electroncis wouldn't buy an iPhone if it cost 10 cents."
Anyone else smell that? Ah, yes, that's the smell of ***** in the morning. - surfing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You suggested title doesn't roll off the tongue as well. Let's skip accuracy and go with what sounds good.
- FalseProphecy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The title of this article is worded badly. They told him the discount was not applicable to the iPhone, like the title says, so they didn't lie about that. The title should read, "AT&T Lied, Employee Discounts Don't Apply To iPhone Calling Plans"
- addakorn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2because the jesusphone is involved.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Haha suckers......
- Error601, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The consumerist accusing other people of lying. Hypocrisy overload?
- uahgekido, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's only a matter of time until the group of us who have multiple carriers get capped walking around town one day. I guess we should have known better.
- djchronz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i dont know why he thought he would get a discount on the iphone or anything related to it. people dont understand this is an APPLE product not an AT&T product. idiots no discounts will ever be given unless the guy behind the stupid phone (steve jobs) decides to pull the stick out of his ass and get with times. ***** the iphone get a better phone a blackberry more bang for your buck and less buck too
- htmlforms, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This employee is an incompetent idiot. Via multiple AT&T newsletters all AT&T employees knew within 2 months of the release date there would be NO employee discounts applicable to the iPhone or the iPhone plans. A huge let down either way you look at it- but he should have known.
- AETAaAS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess the grass isn't greener inside the 'walled garden'
- mrsteveman1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2wtf does that have to do with the comment you replied to, or even the story itself?
- poonaka, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"my only option was to start up another account in my name not associated with the iPhone and that new account would be eligible for my discount."
"I can not return it and have no way of receiving my discount."
err just open a new account? - IceUck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Make that "...that later turns out *not* to be true...
- gwhardyiv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I hope you aren't talking about the title.
- el_taco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'd buy it for 10cents if it wasn't stuck with AT&T
- IceUck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2OK people, if English is your first language, you have no excuse not knowing the difference between LYING and being MISTAKEN. Lying is intentionally giving out information that you know to be false. When some salesperson tells you something that later turns out to be true, it doesn't necessarily mean that the corporation behind the product being sold is guilty of lying.
I'm not an AT&T defender, I'm just tired of these inflammatory and inaccurate headlines. - meechwings, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2How did I know this'd be a consumerist story before I even clicked on it?
- SmokeyB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I pwn3d a girl once and sadly, that was the last time I had sex.
- theendlessnow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I also know for a fact that AT&T communicated that it wouldn't give away iPhones or give discounts for them to their employees. As I understand it, the message was well communicated.
- superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Come on, I knew AT&T employee discounts did not apply, even before the iPhone launched - and I am not even an employee!! Did this person honestly not read any of the three billion stories on the iPhone beforehand that stated this?
- epsilona01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1AT&T Sucks. Sprint sucks. sucks.
I worked at AT&T wireless before they became Cingular (before they became AT&T). Talk about a ***** company. They treat the employees like crap, and their customers even worse. The worst part about working there was having to screw people over, cause that's the rules. Oh, the rep in the store lied to you? Of course he did.
In the end, when I left the *****, they charged me for an extra month on my cell phone - a phone I never even ***** wanted, much less used. $35 for it. I don't think I've ever paid them, since they never provided me with a bill. - tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought I was the only one getting booted off every frigging time I try to participate on this site. My cookies are turned on (personal thing) so that shouldn't be the problem.
- nextsteposx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Here is what you do.
Call AT&T and tell me you didnt like the iphone and sold it.
Then say you want to keep your service but use it with your old phone. Say that and then just stay with $20 dollar data plan.
Then just get your employee discount again. AT&T will never know. People do that with blackberries etc to avoid there high cost plans specific to certain cell phones. - tsteele93, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't see it that way. I have AT&T wireless, but my home phone is through my cable company, even though AT&T offers local phone service. How is that a monopoly. And wireless is definitely not a monopoly.
- Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Am I supposed to care that this guy didn't get his iPhone cheaper than everyone else?
But, WAAHHH, I'm SPECIAL!! - Kitsune818, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"badly" means to a severe degree, "poorly" means improperly or inadequately. You would be injured badly, you would perform poorly, for instance.
- Stratochief66, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1AT&T may not be a country wide monopoly, but they have a number of regional monopolies which are no better for the people unable/willing to leave those regions.
- smurf22, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Ohh I totally misread that.
Burry me. - jamesrdorn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Sorry, let me set the record straight. I am an employee of AT&T, and the day the iPhone came out, we received an email distribution from "NEWS NOW"(If anyone else in AT&T is reading this, they know what that is) stating that there will be no discounts on phones or contract prices FOR THE TIME BEING. Specifically stating that customers are first, and they wanted to make sure that the iphone was available to everyone before we had a chance to take it off the shelves. There is no reason why AT&T employees should bitch about the company, we after all get a 19.5% discount on the service, and usually hundreds of $ off the phones. We also get a 30% discount on accessories. AT&T employees need to stop bitching, or find out what real stress is at McDonald's.
