- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+36I miss the first time when ATT when bankrupt. I was living in Denton TX (an outlying suburb of Dallas) and had att cable modem service. They completely uncapped my connection. I'm talking T3 to damn near OC3 speeds on every speed test I used. And this was while downloading in a way that used to max out my connection. And they neglected to bill me for three months. Now if only Time Warner would go bankrupt I would be set again.
oh and I am so pissed that I can get ATT in my area and not FIOS when people living only a couple of miles from me get the FIOS. Damn you ATT. - RidesAPaleHorse, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26What? AT&T is trying to weasel out of the only good thing to come from their merger? Say it ain't so!
- griffeycom, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Doesn't surprise me. AT&T's DSL is a bunch of crap. Every time I've called and complained about getting under our advertised speed they go on for hours saying it's nothing on their end, that it's something on my end but then the next day I magically get a speed boost and finally up to my advertised speed!
- nooreazy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Dial-up=instant death
- LesterWallace, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19ok, now I certainly think that p0und's post was a bit terse and silly, by maybe he has a point. I've dealt with ATT over the past few years and they are by far, the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. In case you don't know ATT is actually SBC, the original worst telecom company ever. SBC bought ATT and then changed their name to ATT because it was a better brand than SBC. Probably because everyone knew what a ***** SBC was and hated the crap out of them. Now ATT owns Cingular. I'm sorry for you folks that have Cingular service. You are in for a rude awakening once the true SBC-ATT work ethic sets in. I seriously considered getting an iPhone, but once I realized it was only available through ATT, no ***** way. Now ATT is screwing some more people? Really? No ***** way! Get ready for more.
- Yarnage, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17No you idiot. Cingular bought AT&T Wireless and renamed it Cingular, then started to rename it back to AT&T Wireless but AT&T ended up buying Cingular.
Cingular never acquired AT&T, just AT&T Wireless and now AT&T has it back + Cingular. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11same thing happens to me and time warner. Its usually after I have torrented lots of gigs in a short time. But it never fails anytime that I schedule a tech to come out the next day my speed is back up again.
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15"In case you don't know ATT is actually SBC"
Actually AT&T is AT&T; the whole breakup and recombination is a complex one, but it's not that hard to follow if you look at a chart:

The only parts of AT&T that aren't in AT&T right now are Verizon and Qwest... for now... - KraigR, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14no *****..
- pasher1221, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Shouldn't we give them more then 48 hours to roll out the product to all their sales reps? They still have a few months before the FCC mandate takes effect.
But then again it wouldn't be Digg or SlashDot if we didn't blame AT&T for something......Who cares about the facts! - Branden, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Not quite. AT&T bought Bell South, which owned Cingular. AT&T then chose to change the Cingular name to unify everything.
At one point Cingular did buy the original AT&T Wireless but that was a completely different time.
(D'oh -- Yarnage beat me to it.) - DivisibleByZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Just wait until grannie hears about that one cool website that requires Internet Explorer. She'll call you to ask how to install it, but you won't be home, so granny will call Dell's customer support who'll promptly talk her through installation of Windows. She won't actually manage to get Windows installed, but she will successfully format the hard drive. Through some twist of logic, she'll say that your crazy Linux is what made all those family photos disappear.
- cubedude6491, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11The catch is to be honest, its just plain bad DSL...not quite for a DIGG user, but great for someone on a budget

SBC & BellSouth jointly owned Cingular
Cingular bought AT&T wireless and ditched the AT&T name and converted all AT&T wireless customers to the Cingular brand.
SBC bought AT&T long distance and took the AT&T name for itself
The now AT&T (really SBC) bought BellSouth, now that AT&T wholly owned Cingular they ditched the Cingular name and are now changing everything back to AT&T.
Ok, Ncontorno posted same time as me.... - Dgen_X, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I wouldn't call 768/128 bad....it's still a decent connection
don't see myself moving to that plan anytime soon...I'd sell my kidneys before I dropped below 3mbps (I know that's not great...but that's all ATT can give me right now......and it's my only choice in this area....which is probably why the $22 3m/512k plan is the best offering) - p0und, on 10/11/2007, -19/+26***** at&t
- mank, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6To be fair, the user in the article was not from one of the 22 states and was told as such. When he asked when the offer will be available in Pennsylvania, the operators did not know, which is understandable as AT&T is not required to make that offer available there.
Fair so far I would say. - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Fiber? Your girlfriend is a ***** idiot. If you can't get 10 dollar dsl just sign up for a service 99.9% of AT&T customers can't get. Sound like she is part of the runaround.

- kaffein, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@Grahmchilla,
Not everyone can get fiber yet... - Scrow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I am an AT&T Solutions Provider (basically means that I can sign people up for DSL or phone service), and I get email updates about all the newest deals, products and services strait from AT&T pretty much daily....and haven't received a word about the $10.00 service yet. Yet, it is showing up on their website as being available. I just signed up somebody yesterday, so I guess I will see what he gets charged for his service.
By the way, AT&T Homezone HD receivers are available now. - VinSomething, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Most consumer-grade modem/routers can't keep up with all the NAT entries. I finally bought a Cisco 2620 to terminate my ADSL line - no problems since.

HATER - I said damn near. - keithmcbride, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4make sure your router is not the problem. linksys routers have a notorious "feature" that causes your traffic to become incredibly slow after a sustained amount of BT usage
- Grouser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This reminds me of when Abbie Hoffman wrote "Steal This Book." He revealed that the U.S. Department of the Interior had a program to give away surplus buffaloes. So he encouraged all readers of his book to write the Secretary of the Interior and *demand* their free buffalo.
Don't take "no" for an answer. And be sure to specify the color of your free modem. - RodLightning, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm in Alabama and already qualify for Bellsouth DSL, I'm on cable internet presently. Here is the message from AT&T's site when I used the above link to check on $10/mo service:
10:02pm central time
"We're sorry, but one of our systems is temporarily unavailable. Our systems are usually available daily from 6 am to midnight Central Standard time. If you have received this message during our regular operating hours, we are experiencing technical difficulties and are working to correct them as quickly as possible. Please come back to ATT.com at another time or call us at 1-866-999-6181 Spanish is 1-866-772-6932 Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm and on Saturday, 8:30 am to 5 pm."
Could this be the "one system" that will sign up customers for the ultra cheap DSL ? - defektiv, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4while i would love to have something bad to say about any sector of corporate america, i can't complain about my service with AT&T/SBC. although i had to troubleshoot a problem with them for a month and a half and absolutely HATE their level 1 customer support (worthless).. they had no problem giving me a number directly to their maintenance department once my problem was verified, had 4 tech visits and they ended up giving me a free 2Wire modem that ultimately fixed my problem.
they also allowed me to be an active part of the whole process, even with my innate skepticism. and i didn't pay a single penny extra for any of it. sorry, but i just can't complain about them. - bigrobert327, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3did dl.tv talk about this on the show ?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2iphone fans, look forward to stellar service and honesty in the USA!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Ganny and linux don't mix dude. Granny and Mac sure. Granny and PC possibly (I've turned on a few to the wonders of the internets and now I can't get myself off of their mass forwards and joke lists).
- sdschramm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Getting AT&T DSL would be just as bad as when I got Verizon DSL......
- whataboutdave, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You don't know my granny.
Are there still IE-only sites worth using? I haven't found one in years. She won't be needing Microsoft Update... - rowlodge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i get there $24 service for $14, a higher speed, i dont know why, i even told them, but still get the next higher speed for $14, i dont complain. better than this deal.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1don't use your cell phone. and I did the same thing (in TX) and if you keep going it will take you to a page where you can get phone service and DSL all in one.
- Zeldafreak104, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I had SBC internet... but now I guess its AT&T, but whatever. I called them asking for the details to put in my wireless router to get it to work. I kept asking them for them, but nope... they told me to do all this other crap that never worked. So I hung up, called back, asked the same thing and guess what? They told me right away...
and then the one time when my internet wasn't working I called them to see if they could figure it out. They were telling me there was a problem with the line but you know what? It was just because I changed my password for my mail account, and I have to put that info in my router so It wouldn't connect. I think they just wanted to get rid of me.
Well, at least I don't have dial up. - FatHed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2From Ars, "neutral network and neutral routing in its wireline broadband Internet access service".
Can someone let me know if att is blocking port 80 or 135 on those DSL lines, I would say that isn't neutral routing if they are. - derricklorah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@geminitojanus

colbert explains it best.. - Branden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I got "Due to technical problems, we are unable to process your order online at this time. Please contact us at 1-877-722-3755 Mon-Fri, 7am-9pm; Sat 8am-5pm." in Illinois.
- strictlybogart, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i like how the lowercase letters of at&t make it all look so non-threatening.
- dognose, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"The only parts of AT&T that aren't in AT&T right now are Verizon and Qwest... for now.."
Wrong. They broke up into many companies, not all have joined back in. Examples include: Cincinnati Bell, Acatel-Lucent, Avaya, Systimax and Telcodia. They had more familiar names, but for some reason, keep changing them.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3But, to really understand the amazing complexity of the convergence and links between the different companies that now form AT&T, Colbert really has hit the nail on the head with his fantastic explanation:

- michaelpe2051, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i had service thru mountain bell from 1979-1983. i remember the government breakup of the bell system quite well. they ripped us off real bad! especially on interstate rates.
i moved to texas after that. then in 1990 SOUTHWESTERN BELL was, apparently overcharging people for years. i was part of a class action because of this. the law firm out of houston, that was handling the case, got several mil. in legal fees. i recieved a cheque for $2.85 and a guarenteed freeze on custom calling feature rates for 2 years. ooh!
the point is. the AT@T that made this $10.00 dsl deal with regulators to aqquire bell south. is the same AT@T thats ripped us off for years. i guess a $10.00 dsl customer is not a profitable customer?
now that the bell system is almost compleat. God help us! - Incom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1it was my understanding, if someone has not posted this already, that ATT also was going to be offereing the 10$ dsl w/o a phone line beginning later this year. i heard and read the info from npr marketplace.
- Nutmegan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you really want to understand the name change, let Stephen Colbert explain:
