- arunforce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+323Perhaps they should split up AT&T again. I don't think they learned their lesson the first time.
- backoff34, on 10/10/2007, -2/+234Maybe $10 a month is too cheap for your blood, but why the hell would people not want $10 a month internet. The average user doesn't need to be spending $50 a month for their modest surfing habits.
Only someone so out of tune with society would make such a ludicrous statement. - Lyanto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+157Well yeah customers aren't going to clamor for it if they don't know it even exists.
- flaterates, on 10/10/2007, -1/+89I had $10 dsl. I called up my telco and begged them to charge me more. I felt so bad taking advantage of a billion dollar conglomerate. It got so bad that I couldn't even get it up to masturbate. Finally I had to change to Time-Warner cable for an additional $65 a month. Now I can masturbate if I don't look in the mirror first.
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -14/+89This AT&T CEO must live in that alternative universe I keep hearing about. You know, the one where black is white, Windows Vista is a good operating system, the war in Iraq is a complete success, the PlayStation 3 is the best-selling console, global warming isn't happening, Christianity is the state-sponsored religion of the USA and elections aren't frauds.
- dron55, on 10/10/2007, -4/+58AT&T is a bunch of money hungry *****.
- pabster, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51How much $ does AT&T CEO get paid?
You got to look at it from HIS perspective. $10 is like a penny found on the street corner... - keyboardduder, on 10/10/2007, -2/+39I want it!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+41In Soviet Russia, $10 DSL wants you.
- chpsnick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34"But Mr Dent, the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months."
"Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything."
"But the plans were on display ..."
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
"That's the display department."
"With a flashlight."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
"So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'." - kenplaysviola, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34Even if $10/month gave you something like 128Kbps down and 128Kbps up, it would still be worth it compared to those other dial-up service providers (NetZero) charging $10/month for dial-up.
- f4nt0m4s, on 10/10/2007, -6/+37Out of tune with society, or in tune with the ignorance of society. Seems to me that he's jumping on the same bandwagon that the Geek Squad and AOL ride in. If the Geek Squad can charge 30 bucks to install iTunes, if AOL can sell a 20 dollar a month prescription to a broadband user, why can't AT&T force people to upgrade and spend more money by not directly making 10 dollar DSL public.
It pays to know your stuff. I don't know anything about cars, so when I go buy one, I'll make sure to bring my friend who does. This just seems like normal America to me. - KnightMareInc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+29$20 56k or $10 DSL.
yeah I dont want the $10 DSL either. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+29No, it's that no one wants AT&T.
You can't provided government favors, allowing them to spy without a warrant, and expect people to be okay with your company. - ihate2regist, on 10/10/2007, -4/+27So AOL is a physician?
- joebob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Considering the gov't approved every merger since to get back where it is now, I'd say the failure is more deserved elsewhere.
The legislative body that is largely clueless about what the internet is or how it works continually taking big business recommendations as policy.
The executive is only concerned that whatever spook agency he designates can capture all the data they want without oversight to make sure we hunt down all those terrorist greeting cards.
The legislative only gets off it's leash to rule for more IP protections, and to make sure that you are duly prosecuted for all those mp3's you thought about downloading the other day.
More par for the course in everyday USA. - dsmx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Lets have a simple poll who here want $10 DSL? Just 1 yes means this CEO is wrong, but we already know the answer to this don't we?
- cr0ss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19I believe it's a 768kbps downstream and 256kbps upstream.
- glue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19What does $10 DSL get you?
- hufman, on 10/10/2007, -8/+25Christianity is already the state-sponsored religion of the USA, so we're getting closer to this alternative universe.
- cam18, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16If no one wants it, then why offer it at a higher price?
- Waskonator, on 10/10/2007, -6/+21Jesus, no one got the joke.
The statment is inacurate... people do want $10 internet.
Gah! You damn kids... with your music.... - fugazi, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Well it says "AT&T CEO says no one wants $10 DSL" therefore implying that it is someones opinion so it can not be inaccurate since opinions have no right or wrong answer.
- foxtyke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14He's right you know, no one wants $10 768K DSL, we want 20M DSL for $10...
- GeneralGore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13He says that because there wouldn't be enough money to pay for his enormous paycheck.
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13They have to do something to pay back all those campaign contributions...
- sakuraz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13*Reads title*
Oh, I think I get what they mean by that.
They mean that no one in the executive board wants $10 DSL service.
*reads further*
"customers haven't been clamoring for it,"
Oh.....
OH WTF? - belv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12You might be confusing one of those deals where the first 3 months are a lower rate...
- cr0ss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Sadly us employees dont see any of it.
- mrgeekguy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12They don't make it very easy to find. I can imagine most people will miss the link to it.
http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=6431 - tastypastry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12What they should offer is naked DSL. I don't need there phone lines, just want cheaper internet service.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Unless you're one of the poeple that can get netzero, but cant get dsl.
- miyamotofreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11In japan they get 2mbps per dollar, over here we're lucky to 0.07 mpbs for that much. LAME
- GeneralFailure0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12It's still a stupid thing to say. I'd take penny-a-month internet service, too.
- bluechips23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10What, is he stupid or what? With a little advertising and a better service, he potentially can make a profit out of that. No wonder everybody hates AT&T.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Problem is, they make you switch your phone services, even though they can provide the dsl over another companies line, they will refused to do it. Even with at&t cell service, they say it doesn't count. my father has at&t cell service, but phone service with another provider (its not voip) and called about the 10 dollar dsl, they refused him
- BleedingHollow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9he's right we want $10 fios with insane speeds. a bit more like Japan =]
- manicallday, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9If that's the case then I don't want to hear anything about the disadvantages of Net Neutrality. The crux of their argument is that government regulations would disallow them to offer such packages. So this just proves that they're full of *****.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I'm willing to bet $10 that people want it.
- will0861, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Don't forget that AT&T only had to promise the FCC that they would offer it for a certain amount of time. And if memory serves it was like two years.
So, basically the FCC is looking the other way while competition disappears. After all of the mergers in the last few years, has anyone actually seen any benefit from any of them? Hell, Verizon is finding new and creative ways to raise their rates, while they continue to buy out the competition. I think it's funny that these companies say they must merge in order to stay competitive, and continue to offer value to the consumer. But really, who are they competing with? We are down to three(maybe four) major cell carriers, one satellite radio provider, and basically one phone company, since you have to use the local provider that serves your area.
Don't forget that it's not about being able to compete. It's about being profitable enough to please Wall Street, and being able to buy out your competition. - Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It just wasn't marketed well. It's not like it was widely announced and easy to find on the website.
It's hard to imagine any dial-up users exist who can get DSL for cheaper than what they are paying through AOL dial-up or otherwise. - op3r4tion, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Dude that comment stuck it to the man. You tell him.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Heavy? Who cares.
Slow? Really? More info, please.
Hard to maintain? It was a lease vehicle.
INCREDIBLY limited range? O rly?
Sure, the EV1 wasn't THE car for all people and all things. No question there.
Now, tell me more about how the market killed it? Oh. That's right. The market is a combination of BUYERS and SELLERS. Here, meet the SELLERS:
"Hi, I see you signed up early for this car. Here, let me tell you all sorts of awful things about this car that you're interested in buying. Now, you really don't want this car, do you?"
You're right. The market DID kill it! The seller side of the market. - nebbo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6After clicking "View more special offers" I had to click through 5 more screens to find the $10 deal.
Or 3 or so more screens if you click on "get even cheaper dsl" - iamjames, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I found this interesting: AT&T DSL that does NOT require local phone service should be available in the next 6 months according to this article for less than $20/mo:
http://www.statesman.com/business/content/business/stories/technology/06/19/19att.html
"Another concession to the FCC is yet to come: a plan for DSL that doesn't require local phone service. AT&T has another six months to introduce that option, which should cost at most $19.95 per month."
If they come out with that I'm dropping my $45+ 3mbps cable broadband. I rarely need the extra speed and would rather be saving $20+/mo - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7nobody said they have to advertise it! i mean, yeah, at&t is kind of being a giant dick about it, but I know I wouldn't advertise $10 DSL. It's not profitable, it's not good service (it's probably barely faster than dial up), and really, getting other DSL packages for $20-30 is a good deal compared to using AOL. Plus, nobody is forcing anybody to advertise products that they don't want to advertise. They still offer it if you want it.
That's like saying that Ford is engaged in shady practices for not advertising the Crown Victoria even though it's the cheapest big sedan you can get. Of course they aren't going to advertise it, nobody wants it! Maybe it's a bad excuse for the CEO of at&t, but they aren't doing anything illegal, they still offer it, and you can still get it. If they prevented you from getting the package, then we'd be having some problems. - DontGiveADamn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Any time a CEO or corporate spokesperson speaks you know what they are saying is bull. They wouldn't get that far up the corporate ladder if they couldn't lie with a straight face.
- kob0724, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6This is exactly what I did my Senior Report on. My conclusion:
AT&T's got us all by the balls - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6You, sir, are the winner of this discussion.
I don't know what AT&T is doing, but in the story you reference, the car company didn't do anything significant to drive the sales for the new vehicle. (Normally, you'd expect a very large promotion upon the rollout of a new car.) When people pre-signed up for the car, when it came time to deliver, the car companies called the potential customers back. But instead of trying to sell them the car, they fully disclosed every potential bad feature about the vehicle. That simply isn't how you sell a vehicle... in fact, it is just the complete opposite. Then, after all that, they claim that the sales were 'disappointing'. Yeah. I can see why. They knifed their own baby so that they could claim there was no market for it.
Again, I have no concrete information about what AT&T is doing, but I can only imagine that the $10 DSL has had very little (or no) promotion at all. It is like an item you have to order off of a secret menu, perhaps. You have to know it exists or you'll never get it? And who knows, it would be great to see if someone would make a recording of what happens when someone tries to actually purchase it. Do they tell them how awful it is and that they really don't want it? Upsell to a more expensive service? Tell them it is an excellent value? It would be interesting to see. Someone get out your tape recorder, willyah? - bnolsen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I told my parents about hte deal and they signed up for it last week.
Does that count?
The problem is that AT&T is keeping this deal low profile. I really believe people currently on modem service would all jump on this deal if they only knew about it. -
