You, my friend, are an idiot. Broadcom is *****, Atheros is much better. One simple example being OS support, but there are other things as well. Atheros? Off-brand? You must live under a rock. - ultra_lime, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Please don't let it be Broadcom.
~Aaron - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Because, "Centrino" isn't a term that refers to the Dothan core. I'm sure new laptops will be called "Centrino" too. Intel Centrino is the whole laptop package.
The fourth generation is called "Santa Rosa" and that code name refers to Centrino using the Core 2 "Merom" processors.
Check wikipedia before you post kthx =) - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If AMD could come up with something at least as good as Dothan/Sonoma in terms of performance, performance per watt, battery life etc. etc. with full support for GNU/Linux through free (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Software) drivers, open hardware- specifications and documentation, I'd buy a such laptop in a heart beat!
- nonsequitor, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Oops, sorry to digg you down tecmec, I thought you said "Broadcom is THE *****", someone digg the man up for me. Broadcom has horrid linux support, not across the board, but some of their chips cause so many problems it over shadows the ones which work.
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Let's explain it a little more then just saying it's *****. Broadcom uses software firmware to interact with the chipset of the network card. This causes problems with linux since the only way to talk with the card is either to emulate firmware or to actually use it, which you cannot include the firmware with linux because that would violate copyright. I have a Buffalo High Power Wireless card that uses a Broadcom chip. Yes, the support for linux is bad but if you know what you are doing you can get it working just fine. Plus this is one of the better wireless cards I've had, it gets a great signal plus it has a external antenna connection.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yes because all I could think about was tires when I'm reading something about ATI and AMD. Captain Obvious FTW.
- irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Given that Intel definitely has the leading CPU, AMD's mobile computing+wifi package being created later doesn't mean that it will be several cycles behind Intel. Since Intel's advantage is primarily in the CPU area of the equation (Wifi hasn't advanced much in the past few years, except for MIMO), the next AMD mobile CPU architecture may well have AMD back in the performance war.
Don't doubt AMD, and hope that there is a whole lot more competition in the mobile market to come. - pcheaven2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I hope they use either Orinoco or Atheros 802.11n (the newest standard after G) cause both those companies release Linux drivers.
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15I adore AMD because they pushed Intel and lit a fire under them. But now that the Conroe is out and is spectacular and Merom is around the corner why are they countering Dothan? Intel takes the lead this round for sure.
- yaroze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My feeling is this, if they went with Broadcom it WILL be a deal breaker for me and anyone who asks me what to buy.
- McMultiverse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome. Centrino Duo is going to be a hard platform to beat, especially since Intel is looking to stick Merom into that platform before Santa Rosa hits in April. All benchmarks point to a performance beast with great battery life. But, the 945 graphics chipset is damn weak when measured against ATI's comparable offering.
Like the article says, Centrino Duo will have a definitive CPU power and power consumption lead and the Turion platform needs to catch up. But, it looks like AMD/ATI will offer a stronger GPU (and possibly wireless) chipset offering and hopefully that will mean stronger graphics offerings in Intel's mobile platform.
If the Yokohama vs. Centrino battle can give us the kind of leapfrogging and price cuts that Athlon vs. Pentium did, we're all in for a treat. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Centrino resembles the adjective "cetrino" in Spanish, wich means "sallow" in English. As a Spanish speaker, Cetrino doesn't sound appealing to me.
It's similar to that car named "Pajero" Do you know what car is? In Spanish, a "pajero" it's a boy who masturbates too often xD. The marketing guys renamed the vehicle... - KWhat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I dont really care who they use for the wifi, as long as the follow Intel's lead and open the API for developers to create open drivers.
- Dalhectar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, I think the best part of the Centrino brand is the Intel Pro Set Wireless Application. Best WiFi card configuration for Windows that I've ever seen. It's easy to use and doesn't hide the advanced features like the MS WiFi client. I just with other WiFi card manufacturers would release better Wireless tools. I find the MS tool cumbersome and too dumbed down.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if they had linux support, AMD and ATI would have the support of most fans of open source for some time to come. especially if the drivers are as open source as possible
- manitoba98xp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Am I the only one who thinks "Centrino" sounds far more appealing than "Yokohama"?
Introducing the new Dell Inspiron E660T, Dell's latest Centrino Duo laptop!
Introducing the new Dell Inspiron E660T, Dell's latest Yokohama laptop!
Which sounds better to you? - jron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HEY, AMD! Listen up... Open your graphic drivers, We don't care if in doing so you lose your "edge" to Nvidia. Also, if your 3rd party wifi is not open, you'll never get another dollar from me.

Centrino Duo is the name for the Centrino package with Intel Core chips, but they haven't clarified a name for the platform with Core 2 chips (and might simply remain Centrino Duo). And to make it extremely clear:
Centrino = (Pentium M-lineage chip) + Intel Northbridge (or in most cases Chipset) + Intel Wireless Adapter. Those are the minimum requirements for you to use the brand name "Centrino" on your hardware. - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6yokohama like the car tire brand? hahahahaha
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope they are as wise as can be with this one....
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OH ITS ON!!!!!!
- CriX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1About friggin' time. The Centrino platform was a really smart move for Intel. I'm glad AMD is doing this finally. Then again, they've been pushing hard in other areas and now they've got a good hold on the server market.
- sparkysko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All you people wishing they add orinoco? Get real. Orinoco was bought out by Proxim years ago, and since then, they haven't used the coveted hermes chipset. Modern Orinoco/Proxim cards at best use Atheros. Orinoco classic cards are pimp, but performance wise, not much better than something based on Prism 2.5. The smallest Orinoco card made was minipci, which is what Apple used for a while. Modern laptops use PCI express, which Orinoco did not make any hardware for.
Any Orinoco card you can buy from Proxim is not the same card that was popular years ago. They did sell it shortly as the 'Orinoco Classic', but the modern one CANNOT be used in the access points (AP-1000, AP-2000). - irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Betterth: Good call.
Maybe AMD will be taking their mobile platform packaging even further. AMD has acquired both Z-RAM and ATI within the last year, and has already integrated the memory controller onto the CPU die. AMD's next major project may be mobile. When it brings out the Z-RAM, they can cram more and more modules into the CPU die.
Laptop computers and PDAs are becoming devices that are replaced on a scheduled basis, so the next mobile platform from AMD may be based around computer-on-chip. - lwatcdr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Am I the only one who thinks "Centrino" sounds far more appealing than "Yokohama"?"
Gee a fabricated marketing term vs a city in Japan...
Both suck.
How about these product names.

Babbage
Ritchie - irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yokohama is a project name. Kind of like "Mendocino, Dothan, and Santa Rosa."
AMD will whip out some nice marketing name for the platform. - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"yokohama like the car tire brand? hahahahaha"
ha. ha. yeaaaaah, just like the car tire brand. (WTF?) - robdon, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Please be orinoco!
- Goosemaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1heh
- dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1How about not using lame ass names like Centrino Duo and Yokohama?
I miss my G3, G4, and G5. Granted, they might not be as great as they were, but at least it sounded a bit better than 'Centrino Duo.' - irieKEN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Nevermind, not worth replying.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2ATI and AMD are the same company, dummy!
- opusagogo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5awesome. consider the fact that centrino came out almost 4 years ago, give AMD 18 months to finish their yokohamadama chip, that makes them only 5 years, or 4 generations behind intel
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4:thumbsup
- fiddelm3742, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8So, AMD and ATI unite to become a tire manufacturer? Didn't see that one coming
- dustinhoffman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2If I buried you...that means I didn't ignore it...
- MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2oops
- fiddelm3742, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3whoops, thumbs down
- tecmec, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Whoops, ignore this...burry me
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2yokohama like the tire brand? ahahahhaa
- MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4Harsh words! Not everyone beats it to 802.11b chipset pr0n.
- tutivlahos, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3http://pro-tek.ru/im_rezina/YokohamaV550.jpg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -41/+8Please let it be Broadcom rather than some off-brand crap.
