- gfw123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25It isn't ASCII, or at least it is just the letter o with different colors. I would
love to see a real ASCII map, using alib or something. - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15*** *** *** WARNING: DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK IN SAFARI *** *** ***
This site crashes safari. (Apologies to nside for usurping his comment's subject) - greg418, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Sorry guys, our servers aren't down, but the DNS entries did not seem to have updated correctly. We're working on bringing it back to you as fast as we can... Thanks!
Greg, for ASCII Maps [ greg at poly9 dot com ] - Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7aaand there goes the site.
poor server. :( - pixel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"The Diggs are coming! The Diggs are coming!"
- charmhaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3generating the letter 'o' is not the same thing as generating an image in ascii
no digg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4cool baby, it even generated my neighbor's dead dog in his back yard
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hugely inefficient. Every series of 'o' in a different color is marked up like this:
[span style="color: rgb(224, 218, 209)" class="bull"]oo[/span]
Would have been better off coming up with 256 (don't need any more colors than that when your pixels are so big) different classes with short short names. Then use a different element like B instead of SPAN -- not much need for semantic code!
That would have saved him (partially) from his server disappearing off the internet - code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was expecting something like the Tux image formed with the kernel code
This is simply a single character in different colors.
try ▓ (alt-179), or ░ (alt-177) to really see the map - greg418, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok guys... we have found some server-side software that could convert the road maps into (great looking) ASCII line art... Give us a couple of hours, it should hopefully be there.
Thanks for all the great comments!

Poly9 - Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting, I guess, but useless. Of course, it's not intended to be useful, just "pure silliness," but still.
And as image-to-ASCII algorithms go, it's really basic. It doesn't have any logic built in that would choose the best character to use based upon the image's characteristics. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This doesn't exactly work but if you're eager to see what the layout looks like and what it offers you may want to check the Coral Cache. http://www.asciimaps.com.nyud.net:8080/ (No ascii art is in the cache)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It _is_ real ASCII, you can even change the characters on the page!
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's back up, but slowzor. Thanks for atleast lettin me see it.
- jbond03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hm this isnt cool. (i mean that sites go down when they get linked on digg)
- Mental64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is news?
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kinda cool, but can't really see much...
MGM out - KineticFlow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2aalib.
http://aa-project.sourceforge.net/aalib/ - cloetus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Safari goes down like a $2...
- psyon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I as hoping for ascii line art. Like a road would be
______________
______________
*EDIT* I tried to do a corner in the road, but it removed my back spaces :( - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Too bad it's all o's... cool idea though.
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is, but I think he's referring to being able to generate the *appropriate* ASCII characters. The best matches for the image's features, in other words. Just displaying stuff in either crude o's -- or the character, word or phrase of your choice (it does have an option to change it to whatever you want) -- doesn't really cut it as far as that goes.
- energeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for some reason this isn't working for me. I am using firefox 1.5 and all i get is a white blank rectangle in the middle of th screen. I tried searching for something but the search script isn't being submitted
Update:Got it working - cozinator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Google maps is the best - True that (Double true)
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't o an ASCII character?
- samsoffes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yep, crashed my safari too...
- 4771cu5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can change the letter to whatever you want, it won't use an art algorithm, though.
- miket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"The Diggs are coming! The Diggs are coming!"
One if by land, Two if by sea, Three if by web! - reaver, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That's badass.
- beandip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pure genius. Lets make an weird website that appeals to anyone who knows what ASCII means.
Post it all over the web. Put Google Ads on the site. Make money off Google while using their map service for free. Profit. - nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Cool site, but it's really slow at the moment
- Unr3a1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The map probably renders using the script from this website: http://text-image.com/
Not very practical, but cool. Dugg. - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2wow my house in ASCII looks cool
- Sibertank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Thats pretty cool, well done!
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1For more such websites pls visit : http://www.funnydomainnames.com/.
- Jokisageek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It is not ASCII, if you choose different characters it does not arrange them in a way to look like the frontiers, it just print them in the same order "ABCDEFABCDEFABCDEF etc..." nothing like "real" ASCII Art (try playing a movie with mplayer -vo aa).
- hashkaran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yuk
- realnebby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Safari crashes for me too.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Failed validation, 79 errors. No wonder why Safari had a problem with this site.
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.asciimaps.com%2F
P.S. The web master put up a redirect page for safari users so clicking the link will no longer crash. - ownedbytheman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Very cool project.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6so use a real OS and real browser
- d3m3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That's awsome. How'd he do that?
Mine has big black lines down the middle of the map. Just a glitch I suppose. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3wow this map totally rocks !!!
