- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+156Maybe AOL is planning on using the contents of your files to blackmail you when you try to unsubscribe.
AOL: "Customer service, how can I help you?"
ME: "I'd like to remove my account."
AOL: "Is there anything I can do to convince you not to go?"
ME: "No, I'm sure."
AOL: "Really? Who's 'sweetie987'? Is this her in all these pictures? She looks much younger than your wife."
ME: "Err...did I say cancel? I meant upgrade. What else can I buy from you?" - LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+109I wonder how hard it will be to cancel an online storage account?
- qwickone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+96 is it only free for the first 30 days?
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -5/+75Just don't try to delete your account!
- jsmucker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+72its a trick, I don't know what or how...........But its gotta be some kinda trap.

So I know your e-mail, your first and last name and where you live. Seems a little hypocritical. - dcharti, on 10/12/2007, -12/+76Awesome. This seriously raises the bar for similar services, such as Apple's .Mac and Streamload. Let the games begin!
- Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65This is just the funds in action that they are saving by laying off the 5,000 employees they announced today.
- phlux, on 10/12/2007, -19/+60ya but the problem is that any files you upload onto the site will be duplicated with another file of the same name - but that file will be an ad.
Whn you attempt to access the files you have uploaded - you havea 50/50 chance of getting your file, or an Ad.
There are also rumors that all the storage is on AOL CDs - so the access times are really slow. - No1nose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36I hate to say this, but: anything that prompts Google to release GDrive is good.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37I havent been this excited about AOL since AOL 3.0
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36Awesome!!! I'm going to use that 5gigs to store as many images of AOL cds as I can! Take that AOL!
- blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Just encrypt everything with TrueCrypt.
- AZTriGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.
- KeyLimePie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25'Too good to be true' springs to mind.
I've got my eye on you AOL - volcomjerk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25No credit card required!
(In small letters) - Use of 5 gb storage is limited to 1,000 hours within a 30 day period. - Hickeroar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+30the word is "than"
- cooltom2006, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Well...If you don't like AOL (no-one does!) you can always have 1GB free at box.net
- apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19I bet it has to do with the record company they own.
Oh, look, John Doe just uploaded 150 illegal MP3s to his server. Do you want to just sue his ass or report him to the RIAA, boss? - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18AOL does do some good from time to time, such as providing bandwidth for twit.tv podcasts!

US - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Note: You have to have an AIM or AOL screen name.
- Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I would have no issues with storing something on Google's servers but I wouldn't trust AOL any further than I can throw them.
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Proving Ted Stevens wrong yet again...
The interenet is now something to dump things on. Kinda like a truck. - ghentskyhawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15@phlux:
Not disagreeing at all. Any one can pull DNS information - that's why you use a PO BOX, and business phone numbers.
But thanks for the reminder that I need to update all of those :) - GDerre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16How about a Gmail Drive RAID 0 array?
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Hey Apple do you hear this??? How about giving me some more .Mac space...
Oh wait, how about instead you let me upload at more than 5KB/sec.
Oh wait again, how about you stop going down all the time.
Friggin stupid pay-for service. - ghentskyhawk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23I still have a problem with storing my data on someone elses servers. Paranoid I guess.
It's great to have this available. - CausticNoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15AOL wishes they had Google's image. Most every tech-savvy person hates AOL, and with good reason. I would use the service, but their reputation sucks so bad I feel compelled to stay away out of principle.
- superpixel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Anyone remember when Xdrive started back during the .com boom? I used 'em. This is fantastic though, and something my students (and I) could use desperately.
I can understand the paranoia, I mean, it sounds a little crazy, doesn't it? Storing your data on someone else's servers is definitely a risk. What's to say someone couldn't intercept all those TCP/IP packets and steal your stuff, right? Yeah... Don't go using wireless, phones, above-ground transportation or electricity either. I hear those are scams too. :D - phlux, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14or we could use your other address; from your professional endevor; ghent.net

The point is these are avaialble out there in 2 seconds of looking... - eidolons, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Don't underestimate AOL. Blame their former business model that they kept up with for waaayyy too long. This business model worked and continues to work to an extent - they still have millions that pay, right? Sure, most of us realized a long time ago that paying for this is ridiculous, but you can't blame them for the ignorance of their subscribers. :) The fact that people within AOL were able convince their shareholders of moving 'forward', I expect them to have all sorts of ideas they can finally implement that will be 'competitive'. Like this. I just hope they're fully behind this new business model and can just leave this monthly subscription crap BEHIND.

You hold spelling in high regard, but throw punctuation right out the window. You should be ashamed, ASHAMED! - blackmath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Expect google to roll out something similar to this. GDrive?
- Thujone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10where is my gdrive? getting impatient google...
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Oh, won't somebody think of the tubes!
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"AOL: You're so easy to use, no wonder they're number one."
Why is everyone burying this great Aqua Tenen Hunger Force reference?! - KJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm sure it involves a few "catches", like all files become property of AOL, they may inactivate your account for any reason, you need to use a credit card to sign up for the free account, and of course your soul's eternal damnation.
- fustanella, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Nearly twice as much as Google Mail with Gmail Drive. Hm. If they supported drive-letter access, that'd solve a nice problem for me.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You know. There are some things Apple just can't do.
Like pee standing up. - apocalizer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@lunchbox170:
It's only scary if you're cheating on your wife. - Dogtown7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10First... Calcanis is sleazy and AOL sucks. But at least they are getting on the same page with modern web companies like yahoo and google. Before they were a non-factor, but now they are making headlines and spurring interest. They are doing something right. Props where props are due.
Personally, I like the competition. Maybe it won't be just be Yahoo vs Google vs MS.
However, Calcanis is still a prick. $1000/mo per content provider was just a way to subvert the competition and not innovate. It's like Microsoft paying star open-source developers to not develop anymore. - Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the paranoia is about putting your stuff on AOL's servers, not about packet sniffing.
if you knew a company has questionable business practices, shouldn't you be a bit paranoid too? - javiel, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7I don't trust AOL with my files.
- Crosshare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can! I haven't tried it myself, but I've read about it all over the place.
http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/01/how-to-use-your-gmail-account-as-a-personal-file-server/ - Zanneth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another internet company with too much disk space to know what to do with!
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I know Googles plan for GMail doesn't intend for everyone to have 1 gig of mail but if I could use some of my 2750meg for file storage in an nice, clean, secure way I'd appreciate it.
- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I tried this when it was in beta a while ago. It's pretty nice and fairly easy to use.
- eatdontsendspam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I personally hate AOL, but i sure do love competition.
