- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40Have you been on MySpace? If AOL releases something comparable with good marketing, and their servers don't come to a screeching halt every 10 minutes (like MySpace), they just may be able to do it.
- krg123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34AOL has really lost a huge segment of their child predator audience to myspace and believe this is the best way to get that demo back.
- orangekid13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+43nothing can kill myspace... nothing
- icetigaurus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Too bad that AOL sucks even more than MySpace does...
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26This is going to be like watching retards fight...

eventually, myspace will kill myspace, and the next "big thing" will come along. anyone remember livejournal? but, one sure-fire way NOT to kill myspace is to push something as a me-too "myspace killer." me-too's seldom live up to the hype. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"AOL To Launch “Myspace Killer”"
That whole sentence is riddled with hilarity. - csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17MySpace users don't particularly care that it's crap. They're friends are on it and that's what matters. It's the same reason so many people still use AOL IM. Because everyone they know is on it.
It would take much more than a pretty new site to peel even half of MySpace's userbase away. It would take some serious missteps by them as well as a clear competitor. - FZero, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19AOL? hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahaha *gasp* hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah... ha... he... he... waaaaa-hahahahahahahahahah ahahahahhahaha ahahahahahah aahahahahahahahahahahhahaah
- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15AOL will be charging $23.95 for their site membership....
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15It most definitely can if it's any good. AOL controlls AIM, which is what 99% of the MySpace generation uses to chat with one another. Serving ads through that would allow AOL to build up a userbase very quickly.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I was on myspace for a grand total of 22 hours, most of which I was asleep. I'm never going back. I've never seen a stupider site.
- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Whoever gets the most sexual predators wins. ;)
- RetroRufio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Perhaps "every 10 minutes" is a bit of an overstatement. However, over half the time I've spent on MySpace I've had to deal with very slow page loads and/or technical error pages. I understand that they get hit very hard, but I'm sure that something could be done.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Good call. I've never even used myspace, and don't plan on being a part of a community of a certain 'myspace generation', even though my age is right for it."
how is it possible for me to agree more! every moron on the streets asks 'hey you got a myspace?!' and I just check for cuts on my arm, while they look on baffled at the practice - benb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ha, I always thought that MySpace was the "AOL of social networking."
- BinaryCortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13AOL seems to forget that the reason they will fail is because they are AOL, and everybody hates them no matter how good or bad the site might be.
- wayjer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10They have just raised it to $26.95 to get you to use their broadband version.
- ryanmerket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9And if you try to cancel your AOL-Head On account you get 3 months 'free' (only with more ads).
- SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The only thing that AOL should 'kill' is all of those stupid processes in the task manager. If there's a way to make a bloated webapp, they'll find it.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10most of the emochildren on myspace already have aol instant messenger and use it often
if they integrate aim into the service its got a shot at taking off - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Oh, dear lord...
Have you SEEN these "personality" pages? Black type on Leopard print tile! Magenta flashing type on animated gif backgrounds! Chuggy Java-based doodads with embedded WMVs and flash, none of which match, all on the same page!
The only reason I use MySpace is because I have some friends who also use it. I'd love to convert them to something more civilized.
Far more civilized, if possible. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hopefully you don't mean "Killer" in the literal sence, becuase I think that we've had enough people die through Myspace. :P
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Good call. I've never even used myspace, and don't plan on being a part of a community of a certain 'myspace generation', even though my age is right for it.
- scuba7183, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10myspace sucks, aol sucks
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Good point. But those dumb-***** click ads and have money burning holes in their pockets, so they're a pretty important market for both myspace and AOL.
- muleking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I can't believe it took that long to hit that obvious joke, brilliant sir, well done.
- shaund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Ooo... I hope it comes with AOL Spam Blocker, AOL Spyware Blocker and Lots of annoying AOL Desktop icons when you sign up!
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Timmy Vs. Jimmy, anyone?
Oh wait, they are actually entertaining. - BinaryCortex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It would be similar to bum fights, but it would be tard fights. That might be entertaining.
- dnaspydir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7so does that mean all the pedophiles will be moving back to aol?
- dhoefler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@RetroRufio
Did you realize myspace is handling 1.5 billion page views a day (2.3 million concurrent users during the day)? (yes, and I know some people will argue what a 'page view' is... but that's a rough number). With that kind of traffic it's impressive their servers stay up as mush as they do. I'm assuming AOL, and I can't believe I'm about to say this, has a better infrastructure than myspace does.
source: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/03/25/441074.aspx - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6MySpace became popular because the Web Designers of MySpace had no idea what they were doing at first and as a result people could actually put thier personalities up there, instead of the other 8 million social networking sites where you are forced to use html free form fields, boooooring
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hope SOMEONE kills MySpace. It sucks and I hate it.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@orangekid13,
Unfortunatly, I feel you are correct with that statement. Like cockroaches and crabgrass, its something that will never go away. - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It could happen IF
-They integrate it well into AIM. Try to find one myspace kiddie who doesnt use aim!
-They allow you to import profiles, and make it easier for people to edit them.
-It has a catchy name. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If aol tied your buddylist into a myspace interface, I bet it will kill myspace...
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@shiptoshore:
First of all, thank you for calling me a dumb *****. Myspace is a pretty terrible site. But there is good to come out of it. First, I can stay in contact with all of my friends, including ones that have moved across the country for college, or are too busy to hang out. Second, the lack of effort Myspace put into allowing users to customize their profile is educating people a fair amount into what CSS is. (Even though they will still call it HTML) Practically every user uses a decent amount of CSS to make their page the way they want it.
It does have a little good. But next you will be telling me they don't deserve to learn CSS because they are such dumb-*****, eh? - mrstimpson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5when is AOL going to bleed to death, this is a serious comment no digg
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3MySpace was bought out by News Corp (who owns Fox).
AOL is owned by Time Warner. Time Warner isn't gonna buy out News Corp anytime soon. - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3remember friendster? What killed them was slow servers. All the kids went to copycat myspace.
Maybe AOL should come out w/ an iPod and MySpace killer in one. The portable social network music player. Then, they can fail twice w/ one product! - kirkio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I get the same errors every time I try to visit a myspace page as well.
That's just one of the many reasons why I don't use it. - jdavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the only difference is that i can quit at any time without hours of consoltation and examination only to find that after i did drop AOHELL they will still bill you for 12 months and claim that it was part of some argreement that you reached on the phone.
but in the everyone is on myspace, and everyone was on aol i supose there is a comparison - PayneX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I say keep them coming. These sites act as a giant hoover of the web, sucking up all the noobs and despositing them in a haven for noobs, and noobs-alike.
Keeping them away from forums, and certain news-based websites. - paku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd pay for it if they didn't regulate teenage nudity like the sellouts on myspace.
..*sigh* there was a time I didn't even have to search for porn...now... :( - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish someone would make a "Any digg post with the word killer" killer.
- rfunches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"AOL to Launch 'Myspace Killer'"
Anything to kill Myspace has my vote.
Wait...it's being launched by AOL? And it's supposed to *replace* Myspace? Oh #&%@, moral dilemma... - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How can any of you fools think that AOL will kill MySpace? AOL is the anti-MySpace. MySpace is so popular because of the customization it allows you to have. Do you honestly think that AOL will let people run their own CSS designs, embed scripts with mp3s and videos playing that they don't control the rights to?
You can rip all you want on MySpace, but those people running it have the right idea...it's about letting people run free (to an extent). Much more freedom than a giant corporation like AOL/Time Warner would ever allow.
Yes, they have server issues and the site is poorly designed, but it's a great way for people to interact, and MySpace's success goes to prove that it's CONTENT that is king, not QUALITY.
Now stop ripping on MySpace just because you're jealous you didn't create it or that you have no friends to add to your lists and try and think of your own ways to beat it, because the MySpace killer is going to come from a no-name developer, not a billion-dollar corporation. - br0ken1128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4From a user standpoint.. i don't care WHY it errors out all the time, the fact is .. it does.. users in general are impatient and if something else comes along that is comparable and AOL markets it to their massive user base, it's only a matter of time before you start getting the "hey come join me" thing going on.. if the AOL service is fast and allows people to do what they're used to doing, I can see it taking a lot of users away from myspace.. killing it? not likely, but I can see it wounding it.. not a bad thing though, those people who stay will have a better experience due to the offloading of traffic and myspace will have a competitor so it will likely take steps to improve.
I've had allllll kinds of problems with myspace, and I never get responses to my support requests, funny though that my female friends get responses quickly .. if I ever absolutely need help I just ask one of them to ask for me. -
