Goodbye. - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -5/+61If any of my family worked for AOL I would never let anyone know about it, it's shameful.
- _skin_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Its probably the call center to close out your aol account. They are closing it to make it just that much more impossible to cancel your account.
- newevilmind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19What does AOL even do???
Does anyone actually use any of their *****?
It's not 1995 anymore. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21Still don't believe it. Please provide some credible sources.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17The hell is a "Director of Boards"? At least do a quick google search of your buzzwords before attempting to troll/lie next time.
- camtech, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16AOL is not nearly 1337 enough to do that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14How else would we get our frisbees and drink coasters?
- schleufer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Heck, I would have layed off a nice looking number... like say... 1,337
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Call centre gone because their users are more tech savvy now and don't need as much support. Scuse me while i lmfao
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This is the same guy that said his dad worked for Sony (ie he's full of ***** don't listen to him)
- RexKwando, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Thanks for the mucho links.
Is this a sign? Let's hope so. Here's to an AOL-less world! - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11It is no big deal. These were the people shrink wrapping CD mailers! ;-)
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10FTA: "AOL said Tuesday it has done such a good job of helping its customers help themselves that it is cutting about 1,300 customer-service jobs"
haha, what a load of audacious crap!!
They just don't want investors to realize how poorly their business is really doing. - VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Director of Boards"? So he's the head of AOL Tech Support then?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9More like around 13.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7In other news, AOL to open call center in India with approx 1000-1300 employed
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Halelujah!!!! only 93% more to go!
- mdalligood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Will this company ever die!!! It still baffles me why people still use AOL. I find that a majority of the people who subscribe to AOL use it to get online and then minimize it and open Firefox.
-- Ridding the world of AOL one PC at a time... - madformadness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Probably this was the first time those geeks got laid.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So they had a call center that wasn't in India?
- Choppy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The Internet world of 2006 is very different from the world of 1996 when AOL first established these member centers," Graham said. "Today, AOL members are more savvy and sophisticated online. They are very different members today than they were in 1996."
Yes, they are more sophisticated. Sophisticated enough to realize how crappy AOL is and switch to other companies. - Schwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Doesn't surprise me at all. AOL is focusing less and less on being an ISP and more and more on being a content provider. As broadband proliferates, dial-up users- who make up the majority of support calls- are dwindling.
- thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i wish aol would slash it self not its workers.. oh wait they already do.
- tower31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Tyrants, your father was there to make sure the cotton candy machine wasn't stolen by a fired employee.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5These clowns are still around?
- SirCharge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He might be a loser, but I heard that his dad works at Industrial Light and Magic. He designed Darth Vader's cape and light saber.
http://digg.com/movies/Star_Wars_DVD_Set_-_8-Year-Old_Edition - dknighton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As a Jax resident, I can tell you this represents and even larger failure for the city. The AOL call center was the cornerstone of an initiative called the "Technology Park" which was built specifically to attract high-tech, high-profile businesses to the area. No one besides AOL ever built on these acres of land which had convenient access for commuters, fiber loop, alien landing pads, etc. So now this area of land will be completely uninhabited, except by the few Ospreys and other local birds who still call the mostly uncleared land home....and the wildlife really has no need for a Sonet ring.
- zacgorak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4AOL does suck.
- phlaxis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A majority? Maybe not. But it's still a good sign that at least some people are using FF instead of "AOL Explorer", or whatever they call it these days.
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So if my calculations are correct, 1300 is 7% of their entire work force. That puts AOL at about 18,500 employees. No wonder they are in the negative. JESUS CHRIST man, they have more employees then they do customers. There is like 600 employees to every one customer, if that!
- sphykik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@newevilmind
i work at a computer store, and yes, too many people still use AOL - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You got a Pink Slip.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4DAMNIT. AOL must not die, I love thier free coasters.
- Jawshy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought I was the only one that used AOL CD's for frisbees
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MSN. Obviously.
- Nivla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The AOL call center in JAX was largely a "member retention center" Most of the people that worked there were the people who tried to talk you out of cancelling your AOL account when you called in. I was offered a job there about 4 months ago and turned it down. This was the lead story on the local news last night. I ahte the people lost thier jobs but I think AOL is finally realizing they have out lived thier usefulness.
- shadcrkd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yuss! Just what we need..more tech-support people in India..who just tell you
1. Is your computer connected to the internet?
2. Reboot?
3. Um...let me foward you. - stevey5036, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they did it cause i canceled last week. A member for 11 years and i finally bit the bullet.
- k3ymaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's going downhill since broadband came out and they were too stupid to make the change... I've never used it, not using it now, and never will.
- chickenlegs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Is it a sign of AOL demise or does it just mean India found itself 1300 new call center jobs? I heard recently they lost a couple million subscribers becuz they overprice the dialup service so people can switch to broadband and it backfired
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank god, I cant wait til this company dissapears and stops polluting the internet with its filthy software and F***** ads everywhere!
- addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thats ok. I know this guy who works at Sony, who has a sister who's 2nd cousin's girlfriends dad works at NASA and knows a guy who's sisters grandchild has a friend that knows a guy who works for Nintendo (in Japan), who's sisters girlfriends niece works for Apple, who's boyfriend has sex with Tyrant's dad on a frequent basis.
Tyrant: Even though your dad works for Nintendo, Nasa, Apple, AOL and some guys ass you my friend are a ***** loser! - DeathfireD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the only reason why most people still use AOL is because there cheap. But ya theres other dial-up company's that are far cheaper.
If AOL dies I wont get any more free CD cases :( - addakorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I very much agree. The ease of poon on AOL is amazing. Have to weed through the heffers though.
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1less aol = good.
- 5abi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1whats the big deal?
the jobs just went to india - tony23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@newevilmind:
"What does AOL even do???"
I believe they send out free coasters to everyone on the planet about once a month. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
AOL to their 1300 former employee's: You've got mail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main problem of Aol is its business model. As some of you know, others not, Aol
tried to enter to the Internet Service Provider market when other companies allready had.
I see that Aol had a little success in America, and invest its efforts to try to be a principal ISP in other countries. Example Latin America, guess what, i remembered one day i arrived home and there were about 5 cds of AOL in my house, one for each of my parents and brothers, guess what, we throw the cds to the trash can because we already had an ISP. So the main thing now as a Time Warner Company Aol has to cut it's call center and other business areas that aren't adding any value to the company. I also believe the IT managers are going to have their payment reduced, do you believe that when AOL thought they had a chance in Internet thay paid their IT managers about $US 15,000.00 a month?. I guess they will have to pay them less for more. -
