- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AOL is run by Satan himself. I helped a neighbor cancel a few years ago (this was before they had Indians doing all the phone work). It got to the point in the conversation where he actually told they lady that AOL "owned her cable company" (time warner) and that if she cancelled, he would "have her cable TV turned off too". That's when I took over the phone. We were cancelled in less than 2 minutes. Again, AOL = SATAN.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good news: you'll actually be able to cancel your AOL
bad news: no more free AOL everytime you call to cancel ;) - cruelpupet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its never hard to cancel any service. If you cant get through, you just call up your credit card company and tell them about your issue.
- haxxorboi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had to help my computer illiterate neighbors cancel their AOL service... took me nearly a week to get it all said and done... then they kept billing them and they just stopped paying the bill.....
Then they decided MSN would be a nice choice...... that's next on the agenda to kill... (when I say these ppl are computer illiterate, I mean SEVERELY) :D - twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they made it easy to cancel your account how would they be able to pay for all those cd's they mail out?
- buckweat420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I tried to cancel AOL back in the day...and they wanted why i wanted to cancel i panic ed and said its because i got disconnected to much. They sent me a 56k Modem, and gave me 3 months free.. Buy the time i got the 3 months over with. I all ready had DSL Service :P
- ricosalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they suck
- tke1994, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a former Cust Service Rep for a "major financial institution" we used to suggest that customers cancel their debit cards to get AOL to cancel their service, as this was virtually the only way that you could get them to stop billing your card.
- takdiego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no kidding.... took me over 30 min on a cell phone to cancell...what a joke
- pearagon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11.25 million is too little for AOL. Multiply that by 100 and it would actually make AOL stop and think about their customer service.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hurraah! AOL is like AIDS. I certainly hope this is the beginning of the end.
- safe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still get calls about my trial last year that was "cancelled" and they want their money. It's just aweful, I think all the states should bring up cases like this. More power to the people!
- Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally!!
- cunningprose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Day iz a God!"- from the "Color Purple"
- mu-sly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can we fine them for sending out billions of AOL CDs too? Please, pretty please!
- Leonaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally, the customer service will allow you to cancel. I don't understand why they were so hesitent to cancel customers' accounts at request. It's like persistent annoying telemarketers, no is a yes needing a push, no matter how frustrated they get over the phone. As if.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only in America can companies haven gotten away with such dispicable business practices for so long.
- stuffedstich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally! AOL needs to die.
- tearor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same story, call to cancel- free months, on and on. Finally got it cancelled, they started calling me, wanting me back, free of course.
But,, at least they did finally get rid of all that porn spam that was so bad in the late nineties. - Veloxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About GOD DAMNED TIME! I remember what a bitch it was to cancel back in 1996.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You know, oddly enough - of all the stories that could get featured on Diggnation - I think this one wont.
AOL Hosts Diggnation on iTunes.
Diggnation posts story humiliating AOL.
AOL stops hosting Diggnation.
T_T - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I had to do was move to a different state, change my name and get a new social security number. After that, no more bills.
Yes, I posted this on slashdot too. - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here is an easy way to cancel, let them go through thier whole diatribe about giving you 2 months or what ever free if you continue, then when they tell you that you can cancel at any point between now and the 2 months. Stop them and have them clarify, at any point between RIGHT NOW and x months from now I can cancel? when they say yes at ANY POINT.
politely ask them to cancel the account right now then. - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where do you file such a complain? I just cancelled my Verizon contract
w/ out paying the ETF because they added a new fee to replace another
fee's cost that went down. In their contract it states you have 60
days to cancel from notice w/ out paying the ETF and at first certain
CSR's were cool and were gonna easilly cancel my line, but then when
the time came to cancel I ran into some jerks who gave me the run around
questioning my reasons for wanting to cancel and telling me they wouldn't
let me cancel because they didn't think the fee applied since the notice
didn't explicitly say I could cancel w/ out paying th ETF.
I got it all taken care of but the supervisors I talked to were very
disrespectful and did all they could to keep me from getting out
of my contract even after reviewing the terms. - marty0577, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GOOD, those bastards
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't know you could fine a company for this.
- MikeZila, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seriously. Just cut the cash flow. I had to do with with a couple magazines that just didn't get the hint. I told my credit company to reject any transactions with that company, sure enough, I stopped losing money and they stopped sending magazines. Done deal.
- goldthroat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AOL.....yuckooooooo
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's easy...stop paying your bill =)
Seriously, I actually had to do this with an ISP once (not AOL). They couldn't figure out why they were charging my visa $100 every month so I cancelled the card and got a different one after they didn't seem to do anything about it for 4 months. - CoolJammer00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0woo. glad im using aimutation. but yeah, my cousin tried to cancel aol, and the guy on the other end was an Indian man, and everytime my cousin said "Hi, I'd like to cancel my AOL account" the guy was like "YES YES YOU WANT AOL! I GIVE YOU AOL!"
- IceWarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AOL sucks. I had AOL for about a month back in 1996 as my first ISP and I canceled it about after a month and went with a real ISP.
- rundun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A Old Life is always pretty damn ugly
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If they made it easy to cancel your account how would they be able to pay for all those CD's they mail out?"
Damn... people shouldn't cancel AOL. My coaster supply is getting low. - mrshll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice, +Digg, +Blogg
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay! +digg
- PercyKittenz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had to do this the other day after signing up for one of those Free iPod type dealies and it took me forever! The guy on the phone kept trying to get me to agree to let them continue charging me $10/month for another service after I repeatedly told him I didn't want ANY AOL service anymore. I hope this is a class action suit so I can get back some of the money I wasted on them.
- reggiedarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging this. I had AwhOreL a long time ago and when I canceled, they didn't give me that much trouble but they didn't really cancel my account. I went out of the country and they were still charging me. When I came back there was check in the mail for almost $400 bucks and a letter stating that they were sorry for overcharging me and that my account had finally been canceled.
- tikibangout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had AOL years ago, when MSN just started out, thank god I switched then. When is AOL going to learn.
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a horror story about AOL but it's pretty much like all the other one's you've heard. So all I'll say is.. Finally
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember 4 years ago I had free dialup from them for a year and a half because everytime I called to cancel they gave me 3 more months of free internet. I could've milked it longer but I finally moved closer to town so i could get DSL.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>> AOL IS the internet...
Wow, that deserves nomination for the dumbest person on the planet award for saying something like that heh - bwats2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just called the bank and told them it was a fraudlent charge... they settled the problem
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0About freakin' time! I haven't used AOL in years but I still remember the problem that cancelling was. Even after I told them I was getting free internet cable with email, they still didn't want to let me go.
- miataget1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally...Now how about Netzero
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah... a few years ago I called to cancel, after about 1 hour, they finally siad it was canceled.. and sure enough AOL appeared next month on the bank statement again. So I had to call and 'cancel' a second time.
AOL is for losers.
Josh - Xertion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How to quit AOL 101:
You want to dump AOL? Go into your account options and update your credit card info. Change a few of the digits and save it.
You have now canceled AOL and saved yourself a headache. - gahal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A while back I worked tech support for a small-ish ISP. I would constantly get calls from people that needed help canceling their AOL accounts. Of course this was not actually the ISPs problem, however I would still try and help them. Eventually I uncovered some number for AOL that was like the "secret number" to call to cancel.
Hell if I can even remember the department this number reached, but any customers that called and spoke with the people on the other end of this number were able to cancel their accounts without jumping through any hoops. - gahal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0errr.
Hell I CAN'T even...
Missing that 't kind of messed up the last part of my above post. - DarkCloud14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have just one thing to say
HAHAHAHA god damn, finally :D - illdourmum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0about time
