- mcm0818, on 05/03/2008, -3/+69This reminds me of a show I saw on MTV. This spoiled 16 year old girl got a Lexus for her birthday, but threw a fit because it wasn't brand new.
- Purin, on 05/03/2008, -3/+58I could definitely use a quad core for $1, even if it isn't Intel.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+38Or was the one where it was the wrong color? or given to her on the wrong day?
- Omek, on 05/03/2008, -3/+37Oh, I see... it was about a pissing contest with India.
- sevenalive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+28lol i saw that one, wanted to smack that stupid bitch.
- akimbo, on 05/03/2008, -1/+21If china doesn't want it... why don't they send it to us in Australia instead? We can do with some "not overpriced" CPUs.
- mcphatty, on 05/03/2008, -0/+17annnd where do i get these dollar cpu's?
- jejones, on 05/03/2008, -0/+15Think so? Were it not for AMD, Intel would be in the same situation as MS was with Internet Explorer. As they used to put it, "We don't care. We don't have to, we're the phone company." You'd be using a far slower and far more expensive CPU--a marketroid-driven P4 with a clock rate that impresses the rubes, or maybe not even that--if AMD hadn't eaten Intel's lunch and shown the P4 up for the garbage it was. Now the tables are turned, for a while at least, and AMD has to improve or die. It's called competition, and we all win because of it.
- flashback99, on 05/03/2008, -0/+13It's not like they are missing ketchup with their fries, they're ***** building a supercomputer. What would you do if you bought a 2.3Ghz laptop and got a 1.9Ghz instead? Now scale this up to China's numbers.
- HonoredMule, on 05/03/2008, -0/+11Less than a week ago I need to purchase 2 processors, motherboards, and ram kits, plus a few other odds and ends. This was just after Intel slashed their CPU prices. I went for low end Intel hardware, and was very much looking forward to switching a sizable portion of my home network to Intel architecture, with a clear upgrade path to some of the heavier bad boys in my future.
With one cheap motherboard and a mid-range with wireless, and 2 of the cheapest non-celeron Conroe processors around, my order came to $900 plus shipping and tax. I started over with AMD hardware, and picked out chips that were, according to performance charts, slightly better than the previous respective choices (but all rather close). I picked a cheap motherboard again, this time with decent video (for onboard), and a mid-range performance board...and /total/ cost ran me $850. The tax in my neck of the woods, by the way, is 13%.
The net difference in orders was the loss of onboard wireless with the performance board, the gain of good video on the economy board (which can load-balance with external video), the economy board was also now a mATX instead of full size (with no loss of features), and slight improvement in benchmark performance across the board. The net difference in price would have been somewhere around -$200.
Unless you need stellar processing performance for some particular reason (and my gaming/workstation rig has been running just fine on a pre-AM2 X2 3800+), AMD is still the economic choice by a significant margin. People seem to forget that the AMD processors are not only cheaper by themselves, but they include the memory controller and practically replace the northbridge, massively driving down the cost of supporting motherboards. I saved a bundle by choosing AMD now, and if AMD DOES manage to turn things around, I'll get killer upgrades that will still be aggressively priced to woo people back to the platform. If not, I'll just be waiting longer for a full platform upgrade to be worth my money and effort. - widgetmaker, on 05/03/2008, -0/+10AMD=competition=no price gouging by intel.
Just because some of their products are crap do not wish they go away. - grimward, on 05/03/2008, -0/+10I actually switched to AMD because of Intel's price gouging. Seriously, over here in sweden, a good AMD CPU costs roughly between a fourth to a sixth of what the price of the corresponding Intel processor would be. But yeah, imagine Intels prices if they had been the solo marketer of CPU's.. the mind boggles.
- crossmr, on 05/03/2008, -0/+9sure she is..
- Lamadave222, on 05/03/2008, -4/+12Well China did order 2.3 GHz CPUs....and I'm pretty sure American toymakers ordered LEAD FREE Thomas the Tank Engines from the Chinese. China lied, children died. Of the 140 items recalled for safety defects in the US, Chinese sloppy oversight (unless it was intenional) accounted for 120 of those items including antifreeze laden drugs. Screw those criminals, payback is a bitch.
- leetdood, on 05/03/2008, -1/+9The scammers, man. They'd scam her out of her car.
- widgetmaker, on 05/03/2008, -0/+7Build a world class super computer.
- thecoolestguy, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5the world is a happier place with competition.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5Anyone who is on that show deservers to be put in Nigeria for the night in their new car.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -1/+5The only reason they are doing is for having a bigger epenis. they are just pissed off that India has a bigger one right now.
- Corrosionx, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4That's because Chinese factories depend on government officials to inspect and regulate businesses, instead of private third parties inspectors like UL. And government inspectors always fail/are always paid up.
- rdebath, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Don't be stupid, with a thousand CPUs you're gonna get a few duds, try to overclock them and you'll be burning mobo's too!
- zlatinb, on 05/03/2008, -3/+6Very hmm about the China part. What could this mean?
- shots47s, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3The US has a 520 TFlop computer in Texas. They will have close to a 1PF computer in both Oak Ridge and Argonne within the next year. That is pretty good for competing.
- thecoolestguy, on 05/03/2008, -3/+6China wants to be number 1 in every single field, and the sad thing is, the rest of the world is too polite to even try to compete.
- Evildudetx, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4Looks like someone in China need to compensate for some shortcomings........
- fluxion, on 05/03/2008, -1/+3it's not like the chinese government couldnt afford to pay more if need be. AMD made a deal with them for $1 a piece for specifically clocked processors to hit a specific performance goal and AMD delivered 18% less processing power, which is pretty substantial when you're trying to set records. it seems likely that intel wouldve been happy to make them a similar deal.
i feel for amd though, i know they're having some probs right now and it seems like they've committed themselves to making china happy on this one by building more computers, even though they probably cant really afford it - verkon, on 05/03/2008, -4/+6Well, China did order 2,3 GHz CPU's. No matter what price they were.
If you wanted to build a new power full computer, and someone made you an offer where you could buy a nice new CPU, or get a lesser one cheaper, you would want what gives you the power full computer. - ubuwalker31, on 05/03/2008, -1/+3Whats wrong with Nigeria???
- fluxion, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2hmm, wonder why China would be trying to outpace India in computer-related ventures.....
AWW *****... - psykiv, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2But... In texas, everything is bigger?
- Culyt, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2At $1 i'll take like 10 personally. Maybe a few hundred and ebay them.
- ryansimbalist, on 05/05/2008, -0/+2zzz... Making stuff up on the internet.
- HonoredMule, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2To provide a fair baseline comparison, I checked my receipt. The pre-tax cost of the AMD order was $700 flat. Given that the difference in shipping would be negligible and the difference in tax would be about $20, that runs a difference in total cost of about $220.
- thecoolestguy, on 05/03/2008, -1/+2Yes, but 5 years ago China was absolutely no where in the super computer race, this year it will be in the top 5, in 10 years, where will it be? The US needs to progress quicker if it wants to remain the champion in generations to come.

- AngeloM3, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1how big does your e-peen have to be to get into a "Who's got the best super computer" contest
- roarus, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1Great news, now I'll just wait in line behind 1.3 billion people to buy one
- JayRD, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1What the hell man. Why does China get discounted everything from the US?
- Emmo213, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Is that a cromulent word?

I saw a documentary about the diethylene glycol in cough syrup. Apparantly it was the act of one guy (a factory owner) trying to make a quick buck by switching barrels. However, these should have been checked at the ports for their authenticity, and yet they were signed off as the genuine stuff without further checks. Frankly, I don't think an entire country is to blame here. - matt.rubin, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1Arn't they Taiwanese. And you know china hates Taiwan.
- djholybolt, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1India has such HUMONGOUS Peenis..
- keitarofujiwara, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Helping China in making supercomputers is a bad bad idea.
- PueSi, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1AMD chips are great if you want to save some money, AM2 motherboards are cheaper so you end up paying less for the same performance. Intel is only worth if you're going to overclock.
- Kronos6948, on 05/03/2008, -1/+2Wow...a thrifty Scotsman joke. I haven't seen one of those since, oh, I don't know....the early 1900's?
