- stimpy2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10lol. true. Digg usually has the more educated crowd.
- jerryye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Inaccurate summary. Dell hasn't announced that it will use Opterons.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8if i were rich, i'd buy a laptop with a pentium, last i heard, amd was not beating intel on the most efficient laptop processors.
but then i'm not rich, so yeah, ***** intel. ra ra amd. - Malakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Definitely an inaccurate summary as was already mentioned.
AMD and Intel are pretty much tied for power consumption in notebooks. In power efficient notebooks (not P4 or AMD non-mobile) Intel doesn't have 64bit and AMD doesn't have dual core so there's pros and cons to both.
The situation with desktop systems is totally different obviously, AMD has 85% of the retail processor market in the US which goes to show that the tech savvy people who build their own desktop systems almost all choose AMD these days. Of course the battle will heat up once Intel finally comes out with Conroe. - swanny89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@xodex: "AMD always seemed like a gamers delight rather than a processor for real work." Gaming is one of the most stressful things one can do to a desktop processor. If by "real work" you mean web browsing and e-mail, then you're in a sorry state indeed if you're processor can't do "real work".
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you don't have to be rich to buy a pretty decent pentium-based laptop
http://www.slickdeals.net/#p7452 - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The real news here is Dell + AMD.
but...
This paragraph is tantamount to saying they're going to use Opeteron:
"During a keynote speech here kicking off the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology, Ruiz said Dell joins Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and IBM—all of which have used AMD’s Opteron processor for servers which AMD claims consume less power than servers based on Intel processors." - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, I wouldn't count Intel out just yet. At least not for the consumer market. But AMD might gain a strong lead in the server/enterprise market. Power consumption plays a much larger role there, when you're running 10,000 cpus!
- pinetree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here is the correct quote from the article: "The announcement prompted renewed speculation that Dell may be in the process of creating servers based on the Opteron processors, a reversal of Dell’s current 'Intel-only' policy."
- reverbhell, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7On building a server, I chose single-core Opteron's over Dual-core Xeons and glad I did. I think AMD are on the right track and are continually innovating where Intel seem to be using their industry dominance as well as a nominal R&D to carry their products through..
- burnttoast11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Right now I would have to say that AMD has better processors for PCs. Their dual core chips are much better than Intel's current dual cores. When it comes to laptops, Intel's Pentium M them the advantage. But if the Intel's new Conroe is as good as they have been saying, I think AMD is going to be in trouble.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, a mistype of 'microshaft' which makes it even more innane and stupid!
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@placena
Wow what a coherent and point establishing comment. You really convinced me that AMD processors are really hot. I totally think you're the coolest person alive!
/moron - recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and then AMD said, "are you asking for a CHALLENGE!!!!!!"
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that laptop is *****, rm. of course you can find one with an intel that's cheap, but you're still paying an extra hundred or so bucks, and they'll take it from somewhere else. for instance, http://www.averatec.com
- lababidi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Intel has some really low power chips. Around 5W and 10W.
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/20040720comp.htm - kemche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think intel has more advantage on mobile vs AMD. Think about this it will a while when anyone needs more then 4GB on a laptop. And Everyone needs good preformance on their laptop so on the preformance side Intel has edge and 64bit doesn't matter right now on laptops.
- 12340987, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've never heard of a ULV AMD chip. In my mind, intel has always had lower power options and more performance per watt, at exhorbitant prices of course. They're always using smaller dies than that of AMD. Now that the pentium M is old news I guess AMD could take both crowns, because AMD always had performance per dollar advantage.
- theendlessnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To Dell: Dell who?
Seriously, I like HP servers mainly because they supported the choice of Opterons. Glad to hear that Dell will follow suit. Just hope it isn't too late for Dell.... - ShapeGSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They have about a month before the 65nm Woodcrest comes out and the counter starts going backwards.
- ShapeGSX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, this article goes along with the comment I made above:
http://yahoo.businessweek.com/technology/content/may2006/tc20060502_146680.htm
Got my articles crossed. - TarryTops, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It looks like AMD is to Intel what Google is to Microshoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i would've dugg your comment, but for the fact that you called Microsoft Microshoft.
ill never understand these people *shakes head* - mfedyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever since Intel created the team that made the Pentium M, Intel realized this. And Intel's marketing has capitalized on this.
I think it will be hard for Intel's marketing to make the switch from Ghz based speed to speed per core and per watt. They have added all of these different lines where higher number doesn't mean higher speed. AMD's naming scheme is much simpler and that can mean AMD will be more likely to be bought as long as the sales person at the local computer store doesn't persuade them Intel is better. - ShapeGSX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You forgot the paragraph before the one you quoted.
"AMD CEO Hector Ruiz welcomed Dell Inc. as the newest member of The Green Grid, a group of companies seeking to reduce power consumption in data centers.
During a keynote speech here kicking off the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology, Ruiz said Dell joins Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and IBM—all of which have used AMD’s Opteron processor for servers which AMD claims consume less power than servers based on Intel processors. "
Considering that Woodcrest, Yonah, Merom, and Conroe are all very power efficient and very powerful processors, Dell could simply be joining the "Green Grid" because they have servers coming out that are based on the next generation of Intel processors.
No need to jump to conclusions over a paragraph taken out of context. - godspiral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0horrible article, and no relevant comments.
AMD has cool lower power consuming athlon-64s comming out in a couple of months. That will use half the power of current processors, and so probably save $30-50 per year in electricity costs. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AMD CPUs rock for desktops, but early reports indicate Conroe might completely reverse that situation.
Intel CPUs rock for notebook and handhelds (AMD doesnt even really play in the latter market).
AMD Opteron servers rock, for sure, but if you are working in a 1u RAID webserver situation sometimes the Dell 1u dual xeon option on sale is just too cheap and simple, and delivered too quickly to pass up.
I have yet to find an affordable and reliable source for 1u opteron servers who can deliver a server on short notice.
Getting Linux to play nice with the available Opteron serverboards has been surprisingly aggravating at times (SUSE was excrutiating, Mandrake was OK), but Im sure its improved since the last time I did it. - tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2uhhh you know that was a typo right?
- AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD AMD!!!!!! Heh heh heh, now i just sit back and wait to be dugg.
- krazikamikaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Good idea AMD, but you're a little late. Intel has already realized the error of huge pipelines and huge clocks and they are focusing on performance/watt on their new processors. In fact AMD may be hurting themselves by raising awareness of the issue now just before Intel comes out with processors that (potentially) dominate in performance/watt.
I think AMD's biggest advantage at this point is the scalability of their architecture along with HyperTransport, but it's hard to make a flashy, clever ad out of that. - AndrewEvans, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3AMDs rock
64fx here - plucena, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If AMD turns the heat even more all the boxes will ceartainly melt
- fuelvolts, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6"lol. true. Digg usually has the more educated crowd."
zzzzzzing!
AMD Opteron 165 on my home PC - it utterly rocks...that is all. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6I like Intel, Their processors may get hot and stuff like that but I never regretted getting Intel based processors.
AMD always seemed like a gamers delight rather than a processor for real work, Clearly this isn't the case anymore but somehow that Intel brand pulls me back because of past good experiences.
My next processor will most likely be Intel based conroe if it ever comes out. AMD is going to really have show me the goodies just like ATi showed me when Hercules made the switch from nVidia only to ATi. - Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -19/+11for the love of god shut up
- Trenton, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1I definantly think in my opinoin that AMD will pass up Intel and intel won't be able to resort back to their cool and low power usage processors that aren't even close to the power of it's competitor's (AMD). I think that it's definantly getting better at power consumption over the past years, and it's definantly become more cooler running. AMD4LIFE
