- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22complete rip off of this site
http://instantdomainsearch.com/ - cleverboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Seems somewhat interesting, but running a Whois site myself, the website seems highly disrespectful of how many whois queries they need to be running. Before you're even finished typing, the system is attempting to look up the name in the registry... everytime you type a new character, the system is re-checking. The "Ajax Whois" site at least seems to be resource conscious. As thick registries, I imagine the .us, .info, .org sites a a little more likely to "ban" a frivolously "expensive" server lookup like this.
No Digg. Go optimize this tool and re-publish it... it's disturbing. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13and instantdomainsearh.com is a heck of a lot faster
- mtyoung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed. I've been using http://instantdomainsearch.com/ for months. It's great, faster, and it's run by Beau Hartshorne of Hartshorne Software (blog at http://hartshorne.ca/ ). He's been ripped off enough already.
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hate all these web 2.0 domain names...The web is turning into an Apple computer or something...
- presta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also agree - I've been using InstantDomainSearch.com for many months as well; it was a great resource in brainstorming and tracking down domains (I eventually bought through his link) - and will cache searches for you if you like. Give the guy the traffic, he deserves it.
- hartshorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hi Brian,
MochiKit is an open-source library. Anyone is free to use it. The code from is copyrighted material, and belongs to Hartshorne Software Inc. Code from http://squurl.com is only superficially different (some variable names have been adjusted) than code from http://instantdomainsearch.com, at least as of now.
Here is some more information about copyright, and who can prepare a derivative work:
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ14.html#who - hartshorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oops, that should read: "... code from http://instantdomainsearch.com/ ..."
- MatthewDoucette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3htpp://www.squurl.com/
vs.
http://www.instantdomainsearch.com/
If you view the source, it appears you have stolen all of Hartshorne Software's code. Can you please explain if this is or is not the case?
http://www.instantdomainsearch.com/ clearly states:
/* Copyright 2006 Hartshorne Software Inc. Please don't steal the code. */ - jimmy123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Squurl.com is not just a blatant ripoff, it is outright plagiarism. If you check their source, it is structurally the same as instantdomainsearch. Except for renaming of variables or function names, everything else is IDENTICAL.
It is more than a far stretch to believe that they are 'are using our own code that we are currently optimizing', when the code is a ripoff of instantdomainsearch. Clearly they have no idea what Mochikit even provides if they are trying to explain the 'similarities' with Mochikit.
I say we boycott these guys and SUPPORT instantdomainsearch. Its unbelievable that they even have the tenacity to release software that is a blatant rip off of someone elses hard work and labor. - vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybee you should figure out how to scale in the meantime.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not really sure what would ease my concerns... (actually that comment kinda eased my concerns)
It's a great service (its lacking in alot of domain extensions tho.. any of the .au ones for example)
Perhaps if there was some kind of contact or forum on the site, or if it was affiliated with other trusted sites, made under creative commons etc... I trust it now, i'm just wondering how you might avoid getting hte suspicions from others... - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the domain "instantdomainsearch"
I think if it was called domainr or some equally web 2.0y type name my head might explode... - bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You know what... I used instant domain name search for 3 separate domains, all of which got snapped up by domain squatters literally within an hour of doing the search...
I'm very suspicious of domain name searchers because they are essentially "type desired domain here" databases.
Has anyone had similar experiences? - hartshorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dasil003, bitcloud: What could we do to ease your concerns?
- hartshorne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bitcloud: are you sure they were registered in the time between finding them on Instant Domain Search, and you trying to get them? Did you check the WHOIS records? Instant Domain Search will sometimes report names without DNS servers as available, when really they were taken years ago. That said, it should never report a name as being taken when it's really available.
We're not in the business of stealing our users' names. - MatthewDoucette, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.squurl.com/
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there are so few meaningful .com addresses out there these days, which I wouldn't have a problem with if it weren't for the fact 99% of them aren't being used. gets me so mad when I can't have the domain I want because some putz has registered it to try and screw money out of someone. get a job!
sorry, got a bit worked up there :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like it. Would be even cooler if it displayed suggestions automagically too, instead of a link to yahoo.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"How do we know which came first?"
Good question! If only there was some kind of domain search tool availble on the internet. Maybe even an AJAX rapid domain search tool. That would be great. Then we could look up whois information and find that one of the domains in question was just registered on 6/10/06.
But alas, it's just a dream. - tehgeekstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh, SNAP!
- nessup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The perfect way to get the domain your looking for squatted.
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2or www.ajaxwhois.com
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://www.ajaxwhois.com
- SanityInAnarchy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bitcloud, here's a possibility -- start poisoning their databases. If you have reasonable proof that they're doing it (bait them a bit first), then fire up a script and hammer them till they ban you.
Domain names are cheap, but not THAT cheap.
Anyway, if you really want to avoid getting your domain idea stolen, register it before you check its availability. - dasil003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@bitcloud I too am suspicious of any such service. I never look up domains through a website, I always just open up a terminal and use 'whois'. Most services probably are reputable, but why take the chance?
- protonron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1instantdomainsearch.com is offering to let you use their software on your own site. there is a contact link about usage at the bottom of their webpage. if you compare the layout of the two sites, the search box, results, and text below the search box are exactly the same. i think that squurl is just using instantdomainsearch.com's software on their own site and adding a little bit to it.
- inactive, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1also http://prestodomain.net
- diggmanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Check out the links to buy the domains, all affiliates. Wonder how much this person is making.
- brbreslin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Beau,
We had hired an outsourcer to build this tool, and did not realize there had been copywrite violations in the code, we were promised it was 100% original (using the MochiKit + a custom search function). We will make sure to change the similar code.
Brian - artchilles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are very few sites like these, one that I use all the time is livedomainsearch.com.
- bewareofcabbage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Maybe, but they have a crappy URL lol...
- lucamartinetti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Try http://www.domainsbot.com new instant search feature.
You'll know if the domain you search is for sale (with price) - JimLunsford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This site is great!
- nfiltrate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0We are using our own code that we are currently optimizing. The "digg effect" is also a factor in the search being rather slow and should be back to speed in a couple of days when we are own our new dedicated server. We have some new tools in store for Squurl that will enhance the entire searching experience, so stay tuned :)
- byrons, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1http://diggage.com
- opcis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The site doesn't appear to work any more. I found this thread which basically says that they hired a programmer to create the same thing as instantdomainsearch ( http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=112157 ).
I would say this is based on the idea of google's suggest tool ( http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en ). I think they were the first one to come out with something like this. All they did was apply the idea to domains. There are many other sites which have this ajax domain search:
1) http://www.domainsbot.com - also shows if the domain expired or for-sale
2) http://www.iyd.com - most accurate
3) http://www.pcNames.com/check/ - also shows if the domain is expired (definitely the fastest) - drgordonfreeman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1How do we know which came first?
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1This shd be in http://www.funnydomainnames.com/
- brbreslin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Matthew,
Actually we're using the same javascript library as instantdomain http://www.mochikit.com/ you can use it too. We built our own custom php search engine to interface with theirs. I was assured by our developer that it wasn't their code (i know it is similar in functionality). Play around with that JS library though, its pretty powerful. Hope that answers your Q. - JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1No it shouldn't.
1.) The template. At least change the image at the top
2.) It says "Babelfish" is a funny domain name.
GTFO my internet. - benggg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0awesome! this would have come in handy a couple days ago.
- mylkhead, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3interesting, it seems like a handy tool.
- bleikamp, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Interesting way to use Ajax.
