- SniperX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes.. all those domains you're listing are listed on the wiki linked on the story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-letter_second-level_domains
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Obviously this is a valuable commodity. How would the name be sold?"
am I missing something here? Why is a single-letter domain so great? Unless your company name is "A" or "B" then I just don't see how having a single letter domain is an advantage. - mrkoje, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think a private company that was set up by the US goverment should be able to sell those single letter domains for anymore money then other .com .org or .net domains. That means if they are going to sell them ICANN should get rid of them for the 7.99 yr or whatever.
- yashi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think g.com should redirect you to icann.org.
g for GREED - pmarks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1x.com redirects to PayPal
- dfu23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they start selling these one-letter domain names I think that Sesame Street should have first dibs.
- _jens_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nissan owns Z.com
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1x.com would be great as an X-COM website ;o
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cnet's com.com violates their country policy.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't think a.com is worth as much as some people will likely pay for it. First off, 'a' isn't a very catchy name. Second, most people don't mind typing in a few more letters (google, yahoo, etc). Third, if your product has nothing to do with the letter a (and who's does?) it would just seem random. You get the novelty of having the first url in abc order, but who gives a damn? I think this is just a way for them to make money
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It's elite, can't have more than 27 of them, etc."
Wait... - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't mind whatever domains you have... or how "fancy" your website looks.
what matters is the content. CONTENT! :) - npiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2www.x.com forwards to paypal ????
what a waste of a premium porn site - yorch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WWW.X.COM use to be an Online Bank, which worked only online and via ATMs. Then merged with Paypal. That was long time ago, before Paypal hit it big.
- Dissy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I don't think a.com is worth as much as some people will likely pay for it."
Hey baby.. Check my site.. a.com. Its the first one on the net.. - diagonalfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting. Dem's some expensive domain names, I bet. The shorter one is, the more it's worth...
- alterself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0other than selling them and makin an ass load of cash off some moron, is to subdomain them.
EX:
www.hotmail.a.com.
why? who the hell knows why... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You've got to be ***** me. ICANN doesn't need any more money, they scrounge about $5 per domain registration which adds up to billions.
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2ICANN is such a bunch of crap. There is no technical reason that we even need top-level domains, and ICANN has admitted this. Their TLDs' meanings aren't enforced anymore (except edu and gov), so GET RID OF THE RESTRICTIONS entirely. Domains like burger.king and warner.brothers are workable. COME ON!
That'll alleviate most, if not all, of this ridiculous squatting and squabbling. - tyrell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^=== very true :)
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember during the dot com bomb era, z.com is some lame early attempt of reality type mtv network iptv. Of course this site failed miserably.
- boardo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ladies and gentleman, our first digg flame of this post. I was wondering when it was going to start...
but yeah, I think single letter domains are overrated unless you just want it for some sort of prestige. - 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Single letter domain names offer a little prestige like single letter stock ticker symbols on the NYSE.
- hessamz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ThankTheCheese: How about it's really easy to remember and type? It's elite, can't have more than 27 of them, etc.
- MrPhelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see one letter domain names as an advantages either ... Since they convey no meaning, they are not that easy to remember. Really good domain names must be short and have an actual meaning to make them more likely to remain in peoples minds.
- anuradha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.x.org has been there for ages...
- mpowell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Now it's interesting. I surely brings back memories when I was first introduced to the internet in 1992.
- synmoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah this about one thing... the money. Greed.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0O.com will go to Oprah. E.com will go to E! A.com would go to Amazon, unless Apple takes it. G.com will go to Google.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0supermoonman - I thought the same thing. What a dumbass.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"WWW.X.COM use to be an Online Bank, which worked only online and via ATMs. Then merged with Paypal. That was long time ago, before Paypal hit it big."
I remember using X.com back in the day. When you typed in the address you got a page asking if you wanted Paypal or their online banking. I recall still using "x.com" for a while after "paypal.com" became available just because it was easier to type. - KiwiFireball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NYSE index for Ford Motor Company is "F"... Wonder if there is going to be an "F" website in our future.
- pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0x.com was a sweet online bank. then they sold out and dissapeared. bitches
- JanesDaddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised we haven't seen a lot more NUMBERS in domain names yet.
- Terrx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Comp USA should really pony up the "estimated value of $36,000 to $54,000". for comp.us
- justchil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet more domains for people to camp.
- yeknod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i looked into some of this stuff a while back out of boredom. hopefully this is still accurate.

http://www.digg.com/technology/Single_Letter_Domains_May_Be_Up_for_Sale - KZ_PuGz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the word expansion is key here. He bought them to allow room to grow. So even when johndoe.com was used you could sell people johndoe.a.com or something like that.
- Ashenfield, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gotta agree with the Sesame Street comment.
That would be ideal.
Go go gadget educational websites.... - Arevos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0stokestack: If the TLD restrictions are removed, how to you propose we tell the difference between local addresses such as localhost.localdomain or bob.london.office, and external addresses? Further, how would you stop any derestriction attempt becoming a chaotic virtual landrush?
- ronin9, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3The "Fonz" should buy a.com
------------------------------
http://www.georgiaaliveat25.com/net9.htm - ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree with troyDoogle7, if you start allowing domains like burger.king, the less computer-savvy people are going to add a .com to the end out of ignorance (or habit) and wonder why it returns an error.
- H_o_p_s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0o.com should be overstock.com...
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Oh great stories about squatters. Is this what Digg has come to? Any company can just figure out another name for what they want, and bam. What about 2 letter internet addresses? Has anyone bought that? What about digits? would I start seeing algebra as a website?
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I think the .com works, and most importantly people know how to use it. Think of the chaos that would ensue if they changed the tld system... Don't fix something that ain't broke..
- tfratzke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0While this is cool, alot of this stuff is already available from an app like Galleon. http://galleon.sourceforge.net/html/index.html
- tfratzke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0^^ Sorry...wrong thread....^^
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0EVIL!!!! CONSPIRACY!!!! ALERT TEH INTERWEBS!
