- ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -4/+86128K is considered broadband in this backward country.
- Morca007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+61Better title: 99% of Australians With Mediocre, Capped Broadband by 2009
- quickjack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+63Probably 99% capability, not 99% adoption.
- peranadigital, on 10/11/2007, -2/+60100% of Australians suggest you go ***** yourself.
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -5/+58The real question for me is: Do the packets flow backwards?
- sauron256, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44If you're Australian... why are you trying to talk like some American ghetto kid?
- sexualaj, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39For all the Americans,
Howard = Prime Minister, that says alot just in time for a election but then never lives up to promises.
He isn't getting my geek vote that's for sure. - andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33If our government was in touch with our people, Australia would have had true broadband 10 years ago
- BlackAle, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33only reason Americans seem to matter these days, are that they are the ones ***** the world up.
- Fredx, on 10/24/2007, -10/+41Howard's planned network is far inferior to the one Rudd has planned...VOTE Rudd !!!!
- grumpyrain, on 10/24/2007, -1/+31> Australia is MASSIVE
True, but the population is quite centralised around the major cities and regional centres. It only becomes unfeasible when you start pretending you can give fibre access to farmers living on 100km blocks. - AdrianKRAZY, on 10/11/2007, -16/+44Howard is just copying Rudd. Still voting labur!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+27The only thing thats going to stop me voting for Kevin Rudd is the recent religious comments he has made. I don't want my country to turn into some sick twisted mirror of the US and their 'god told me to' *****.
Be that as it may, I'm sure NOT going to vote for ***** up little Johnny! - andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25100% of the people don't give a ***** about your backward opinion, mate.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25he is just an *****.
- aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -8/+30WHO DO YOU TRUST? ....... not Howard thats for sure.
He's just playing total catchup and I think this time, Australians are starting to see through him.
@Atomic1fire .... you sound like a luddite. Technology is our future, and broadband is a crucial part of that. - natonzor, on 10/24/2007, -3/+23Yes, I agree. Telstra is the worst thing that happened to Australian Telecommunications.
Telstra (a private company that used to be government owned and owns THE network) recently set up a blatant propoganda site (www.nowwearetalking.com.au) basically blaming the lack of decent high-speed internet in the city on either The Govt, The ACCC (competition watchdog), or a group of 9 other telcos (These telcos have either no network or a small one (because otherwise Telstra would have to complain) so they have to buy raw ports and access to services from Telstra).
A local ISP (Internode) has these prices for internet access (http://www.internode.on.net/adsl/pricing/home.php):
ADSL1 (1.5Mb/s) with 20GB usage: A$69.95 (on telstra's network)
ADSL1 (8Mb/s) with 20GB usage: A$89.95 (on telstra's network)
ADSL2 (24Mb/s) with 20GB usage: A$59.95 (on Internode's network).
Internode is one of the few who has any sort of network, and they dont even own the exchanges (they can't, Telstra owns all of them). Instead they have to put Internode DSLAMs in telstra exchanges.
Lastly, on the telstra propoganda site (http://www.nowwearetalking.com.au/Home/PollArchive.aspx) there are some online polls:
Who do you think is blocking high-speed broadband for Australia?: Telstra - 97.1%/78% depending on the poll
Should Australia take pride in rising from 17th to 16th place in world broadband rankings?: No - 60.7%
Was Rupert Murdoch exaggerating when he described Australia's broadband as a disgrace?: No - 75%
Will you buy Telstra T3 shares despite the risks posed by onerous regulations?: Not willing to risk losing my money - 62.8%.
Interestingly enough, when the "Who is blocking broadband in Australia" poll happened, Telstra blamed "Telstra-haters" for "spamming" the poll. They fixed the numbers but it is overwhelmingly on Telstra's face.

Heheh. If i had the choice, i would switch to Internode or iiNet. DO NOT GET TELSTRA BIGPOND CABLE. - Lylepalooza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Unfortunately though, Howard's magical trick of sweet talking everyone at the 11th hour generally pays off, repeatedly. Some people are just beyond hope.
I know who I'll be voting for. - nonokiaboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19:D
finally an aussie thread on digg - ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -8/+25You forgot Howard's sucks their presidents ***** like no other. While Rudd won't.
- Sazafraz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18So does this mean bigger tubes or more tubes?
- crackah, on 10/11/2007, -10/+27***** off rudd can get fibre to 98% of all australians for 4 billion.
Australia is MASSIVE, there was a article yesterday, just about the challenges Australia faces with broadband. - brickbat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17its all just deflection by both of them. So what if they implement fibre optic and still leave the ***** international links that charge by the tb. As long as they are there Australia won't have unlimited plans without shaping.
Don't look behind the curtain! - IllBeBack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Australia:
Broadband - check
Enough water to use - uhhhh, no
Priorities... - gimpieman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15It should read: 99% of Australians Want Broadband By 2009
- springah, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19hahahahah. american much?
- BJ_Blaskowitz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17God I hope this is true.. I've had to put up with the same ***** 56k connection at home since '99. :'(
- 0x0000ff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Thanks man, you're a wanker. And you're blocked!
- jackhole, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Can't it be both?
- clonerad, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Great! Now the Kerrigans can surf the web! Daryl will be on eBay motors saying "What's he want for that?! He's dreaming!" all day long.
- jono10, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12As a plumber from Down Under, I think this is great news for the plumbing industry. We should be able to get a great deal on all those tubes!!!
- np374, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17Yet only 45% has access to vegemite, the aussies need to get their priorities straight.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13In Australia "Capped" refers to download quota, not speed. I get 20GB of downloads per month on a 512kbps connection. The fastest speed I can possibly get is about 3Mbps, because I am 4.1km away from my local telephone exchange and it degrades over long distances. But I'm not ready to switch to ADSL2+ yet, I can't afford to pay more per month. I go over my quota nearly every month, and end up suffering for up to 4 days on a 64kbps connection before the next month starts.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Most broadband is capped, otherwise we'd all be at 100mbps and above.
- djstreet, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Hope that broadband can conjure up some rain!
- sathias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It beats him back to parliament house when he goes on his morning walk.
- JPFinno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9wow lightspeed, now it's 5 people here that hate you. now we just need that 1 kangaroo to tell you you're a freaking moron and that makes your 100%.
ur blocked. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Without some form of minimum download quota limits in law, we'll get ***** by the Telco's yet again.
- auxide, on 10/11/2007, -6/+14Rudd will smoke as much pole as Howard, ALL politicians do it
also, labour also has the ability to not live up to their promises, they will say whatever it takes to get your vote (libs are cut from the same cloth, this is just a fact;)) - HumphreyB, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10When this announcement was made, I remember seeing Howard on tv asking some computer guy: "How long does it take to download a movie on that?". Ha! He's a ***** pirate!
- bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Vegemite! i had a kiwi friend who introduced me to that stuff... i chant hexes at her to this day!
- itchyfeet, on 10/24/2007, -0/+7We need an Aussie section.
- ElRayQuieres, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9the people who haven't blocked you yet
- BlackAle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1099% impressive. I can imagine there's lots of Americans looking down on this, not realising their coverage rates suck.
- itchyfeet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Nah it's cause of that ***** American base at Pine Gap stealing all the megabits for Pr0n for the troops in the desert who miss their good ole' American pig ***** porn.
- Shpox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I highly doubt this, I'd say it will take a minimum of five years.
I personally am sick of Telstra and there needs to be some serious recall. I currently am on 56 K when I moved, why ?
Because of Telstra. Despite being 20 mins from the CBD, the suburb is not close enough to the closest phone exchange because Telstra never bothered to put one in. The closest exchange is 8 km away and is only ADSL2+ active. They never bothered to think "How is a neighbour hood of 700 people supposed to get internet ?". In the end, everyone here relies on wireless which costs a hefty 150$ a month with a download limit of 3 GB. Not suprsing, the prominant ISP that provides wireless is telstra. After talking to numerous ISP's including telstra, they said that wish they could help the situation but seing how the Phone tower prominantly belong to Telstra, they can't do anything about it. Telstra ultimately runs everything.
To solve this situation I have to get a signatures for a petition of roughly 1000 people before Telstra even bothers to consider providing us with a phone tower. What a joke. All other countries are thriving off superfast internet, with ultimately no "shaping" for very cheap amounts per month while we sit here on mostly ADSL plans for urbanised areas who even consider offering plans of 500 mb per month. Come on.
Lets estimate what the new plan schemes for telstra on these new service will be like.
Download limit: 1 GB
Download Speed: 70 mbps
Cost: 170 $ a month
Give me a break.
Personally, if it only took 3 days from Rudds plans for Howard to "Propose a great idea" instead of his large amount of years as Prime Minister, I personally don't care what he has to say about internet. He could have proposed this absoultely ages ago. ***** off. I really can't say it any better than that. - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6"hate the au government. its $40 a month for 4GB downloads at 512kb still. i just upgraded to a new $50 plan with 1500k/8gb downloads. it sucks cuz in the US, they get 10mb/s downloads for half the price."
America's internet is really bad compared to places like Japan - they can get unlimited 100mb/s for US$50 a month... - StriferDiem, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Just in time for the final season of Lost?
The biggest nation of TV show downloaders is about to get a whole lot bigger. - EmileVictor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That'll teach you to be greedy! Vegemite loving requires moderation. - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@ robche
I have no problem deciding who to vote for. Howard has screwed up this country for so long that even if Labor fall thorugh on a couple of promises, they're still gonna do a hell of a lot better than the Libs.
John Howard has done nothing but lie through his teeth the whole time he's been leader....IT IS TIME FOR HIM TO GO! -
