After being bombarded by meebos and zotos and kikos, all the nonsense words have begun to sound the same. Unless your name has some hint in it that reminds me what you do, I'll probably forget it.
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We all know that fashion and trends go in circles so I predict that in the next wave we'll see an explosion of retro-naming:
Arkwright & Sons
Hacklethwaite Bros
Spencer, Spencer & Dudd
etc.
I see you're an astute person who's ahead of the pack, Ashay, so contact me now for a unique 'earlybird' offer on my usually extortionate Web2.5 naming consultation session.
(T&C apply. Do so at your own risk. The value of your name may collapse as well as fizzle out.) - koweja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not necessarily a mistake on their part. It certainly make their address memorable. Plus, if anyone gets offended, they can claim ignorance.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah yes, content generated by the pets and close relatives of people involved in social networks. It's about to take off; make sure you get your VC funding in before that ship sails...
- xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great article. Best I've read hear in a while.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28) include words that can, if pronounced correctly, sound like another word whose domain is likely to be already taken. Double up consenants, or cut out vowels (digg, flickr), or spell it one letter off (grupthink, et cetera)
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well their website uses frames, so they sure as hell don't deserve the domain.

lmao - ashay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well I am aiming for a web 2 and a 1/2 startup..any suggestions for that?
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The down side to that is that you're then restricted to a particular business area.
ToysRus might have a hard time building a reputation as dependable security consultants, for example, whereas a brand such as Nike is able to be more flexible and future-proof. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+211.start yourself on a techie show

Call it.... build-it-and-they-will-come.com - koweja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And here I thought it would be mocking Web 2.0. How disapointing, but at least it is good advice.

Spock, Shell, Trump, Swarm, .. - taezo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thought about this a lot. My name is too unusual for most people to spell after hearing it. So then what? Initials? Those names are owned by gov agencies and big biz.
Next went for a name that said what I do, but that's not so easy--I teach woodworking and boatbuilding. Many of the tool names have been bought up by retailers.
I started thinking about short words that weren't too strong, and which were easy to speak and say in foreign languages. I wanted it to be hip, so I added a number.
Sounded cool. cut5. Kinda SnowCrash-ish. It relates to the activity of building stuff in wood.
I loved it. Perfect web2.0 name. But alas, a German biotech firm owns it. www.cut5.com. Great logo. The red 5 is rockin it. I have no idea what they do, but whatever it is, I'm sure I cannot afford to buy it.
Gotta try another tack. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Tip 11: Use your instincts!
I did, and I purchased these two while they still were available:

I'll have something set up with them by 2007 :) - plagiats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Welcome back to 1998.
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19. Don't make the extension part of your name. You only end up looking retarded.
- tofuComputer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+012. Don't spend ANY money doing it (in fact, just don't spend any money at all!).
- Sagags, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1humm I wonder if sagags was a good name for my site, it is origonal.
what do you guys thing? - stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Some good ideas there, although most of them seem pretty obvious.
- HalfGiraffe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0How about hum.com?
The domain is available. - quackslax29, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0tip 13. just make a web 3.0 site. you wont have to name it because by then all you'll have to do is think about what site you want to visit. who needs metadata when you have your thoughts.
- icall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Startups are cheap and easy to launch? 1 in 1,000,000 startups are easy and cheap to launch, the other 99.9999% take a lot of work and money.
