- mikbunn, on 11/10/2008, -2/+36The list seems narrow-minded. A lot of these things can be used in conjunction with their alternates for even greater effect.
- firebert69, on 11/12/2008, -1/+16I wouldnt consider anything on that list "high tech" in the first place
- aobtd, on 11/12/2008, -1/+15ah screw that, keeping my dual monitors
- npcabral, on 11/12/2008, -1/+15I'd also like to add carrier pigeons to that list as being heavily underrated...

Sidelined: STFU - levitron, on 11/10/2008, -4/+16Libraries FTW!
- EVILTHETURTLE, on 11/12/2008, -1/+11What a horrendously useless article.
- acontorer, on 11/12/2008, -0/+10Also underrated: the clothesline. It's an incredibly cheap, simple solar panel.
- DCstewieG, on 11/12/2008, -0/+9"...does the light of a bathroom restaurant really need to be on..."
Wait, have I been missing out on bathrooms with their own restaurants? - OnShakedown, on 11/10/2008, -0/+9the point about the kindle is a good one. i haven't used a library in ages, but there are lots of books i'd have rather borrowed than bought.
- junyamint, on 11/12/2008, -1/+10Buried. A lot of the headlined innovations are great steps forward. E-books for sure when the quality of the material looks no different than paper will be like having an entire library (minus the great study space) right at your finger tips.
- jimbod, on 11/12/2008, -2/+9Did anyone else find this a little condescending, attacking our generation for desiring instant gratification? Is it really more environmentally friendly to have a book printed in another country, shipped to a distributor, then shipped to a central library and then shipped between rural libraries and delivered to my door 3 months later by mobile library outreach trucks operated by convicts performing community service? Somehow a 100kb download seems to demand a much smaller footprint. How about temporary downloads from my library?
- TheMachine1, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7With a car you get fat and die early but you have kids. With a bike you grow very old , stay alone and childless. Bike FTW!.
- TheMachine1, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6No its not a requirement just your odds approach zero when you show up to your dates house on a bike.
- killtrocity, on 11/12/2008, -0/+6While I cannot ditch my car entirely, I use my bike for doing all of my light shopping and local trips.
Many people complain about how far away things are or how inconvenient it is to ride a bicycle, but if most people used a bike for 5-10% of their trips, it would provide countless benefits to society. - tray2, on 11/12/2008, -1/+7Headlined: Segway

- statuescrumble, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Dont tell me a hybrid car = a bike.
- Spire3660, on 11/12/2008, -0/+5Does every ***** site have to pop up a survey bubble now? I go to HP, asked to fillo out a survey, best buy same thing, now this ***** website has teh same ***** thing. Why would you think that popping up a questionaire in the middle of what im trying to read is a good ***** idea?
- HellifIno, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4Haven't you heard? Clotheslines are responsible for instant property value loss in surrounding areas! As soon as they're put up, and especially if someone sees clothes on them!! The horror!
/s ... just 'cuz SOMEONE would probably miss it... - fivo7, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4dugg for
"compost piles doesn’t make for very interesting conversation, nor Diggable headlines." - inactive, on 11/12/2008, -0/+4popups still exist ?
- spdorsey, on 11/10/2008, -2/+6I'm a big fan of audiobooks. Not because I hate turning pages, but because I often drive long distances, and now I can hold conversations on topics such as the Supreme Court, string theory, and the energy crisis.
I never saw any reason for the Kindle. Seems redundant. - Numarx, on 11/12/2008, -2/+5The list seemed to get more and more retarded as it went along, figured the next one was TV and its alt was a wind up radio....
- Moonkeeper, on 11/12/2008, -0/+3Here's another:
Flying a private jet to a meeting.
Conference calling. - sp89, on 11/12/2008, -3/+6I used to be an avid reader in elementary school and middle school. Ever since I got my own computer I stopped reading. :(
- Lokc, on 11/12/2008, -1/+4Due to this whole advocating using dead trees shipped by truck vs a small data as a means of conveying information, I am more inclined to think they are just nostalgic and afraid of the future
"Get off my lawn!!" - paulb0t, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3That survey pop-up was the worst. popup. ever.
- linuxeventually, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Buried. The author of this list clearly hasn't tried any of the stuff they are preaching. I'm sure they've never had to make do without running water, electricity and other bare necessities of a modern world. It isn't fun, and if they had, they wouldn't be complaining about tech. Get out of here Luddites.
- Spire3660, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Huh? Are you saying a car is required to attract a mate??
- Yazilliclick, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Except be as portable, as easy to read as a book in as many locations, and be easy on the eyes for reading for long periods.
- tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Hybrids are marketing brilliance, nothing more.
- ninjaturtles1, on 11/12/2008, -2/+4Dugg for the bit about bikes!
I sold my car and ride my bike everywhere I have to go! It awesome!
And very, very liberating! - ksgant, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3And wouldn't using an ebook reader be better than printing on a book? Even using recycled paper, that's an awful lot of energy being expended for printing a book.
Existing books I can see going to the library for, they're already printed. But wouldn't it be much greener (since the site this list is on is called Treehugger.com) to just electronically publish a book in the future?
Come on... - chaos36, on 11/12/2008, -1/+3buried for the word treehugger and being dumb hippi *****.
- BT1000101, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2If you want to sell E-Book readers, make them cost less that an infinitely more useful, entry-level notebook computer.

problem is however that cooked foods attracts rats
some uncooked foods attracts mice - mradules, on 11/12/2008, -0/+2Buried for article split into 2 pages unnecessarily (yes, I'm that lazy!)
- tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Excuses, excuses. You Aussies are getting fat and lazy.
- tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Sure, but it's still more fun to put a cat in a dryer than hang to one on a clothesline.
- alexnb185, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2ya, wtf is with all this geen hype. Turn your ***** off and you're good to go.
word. - tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Rules to date by:
1) Make you date come pick you in her ride with her gas.
2) Make sure your date makes good coin so she can take you out and wine and dine you and take you on expensive vacations.
3) You get to come first. - skywake, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Doesn't work everywhere sadly. Not everyone lives close to where they need to get and quite often the roads aren't very bike friendly. Where I live for instance its half an hour drive to the city centre in non-peak periods (almost no traffic) and its about 300m down hill.
If I was wanting to reduce my carbon footprint my first choice would be public transport. Unfortunately busses only come here every 30mins on weekdays (which is fine) every hour on Saturdays (not so great) and every two hours on Sundays and public holidays (not good at all) and stop at 8PM...... so a car is a necessity. - Yazilliclick, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Ignoring that ebooks are an advancement of books with many advantages and the tech is still growing and new...
Books are made in manufacturing plants. Guess what they're made of? You have pulp mills, printing presses etc... All made of metal, using a good deal of chemicles and requiring the transport (gases, big trucks) of a rather heavy material from place to place to place for each step. An ebook reader replaces many books and only requires the digital download of a book. Meaning no more transportation all over the place. - reconsldr74d, on 11/12/2008, -1/+2Ok well how about almost all hybrid cars = higher cost even over the long run and just as much if not more damage to the environment due to nickel and other toxic metals used in those cars?
Hybrids make people feel better but they are far from the right answer to anything. - alfiegnome, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Global warming does not cause drought. Droughts are naturally occuring and have been happening in countries for millions of years. To say that global warming is the cause for your countries unfortunate situation is stupid. Droughts can come about in a multitude of ways.
- Yazilliclick, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1Right numb nuts, droughts didn't exist at all prior to this global warming craze. Heck I'm sure the weather was just peachy all the time prior to us and then just went to ***** all of sudden. Droughts never existed, hurricanes didn't exist, tornadoes didn't exist, floods didn't exist.... /s
Facts are that your drought if what you're saying is true is a natural phenomenon not caused by man or our actions, at least not from any pollution. So you can turn off your tv, use CFLs, pray to your earth goddess and nothing is going to change until the weather patterns change on their own as usual. - tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1I disrespectfully disagree.
- tomarocco, on 11/12/2008, -0/+1It comes with side benefits.. Rat meat tastes just like chicken if you prepare it properly. Anyone who's ever eaten at the 99 Cent Chinese food joint knows that.
