we should all BOYCOTT GOOGLE if they give out our private information to the Corrupt American Government! - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1found out about a month ago and disabled the search history. at least other people who use the comp wont know my habits
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh god. im not even going to click the link, this isnt interesting.
google doesnt "record personal data." they work like any other website does and personal data gets sent to the servers when you sign up to a service, just like any other website on the internet does. google happens to be better at not giving away info when the government tries to force them! - 83457, on 10/12/2007, -1/+290% of statistics are made up
- rlgunnells, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"90% of statistics are made up"
Yes, but 40% of them are true! - npodges, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg needs a comment rating system with some motivation for people to moderate. that way, you can rate every comment people make, and it would also go into their cummulative rating. Then, you could view the comments at your threshhold for that thread, or based on the rating of the users, because lets face it, 77% of these comments are just offtopic, overrated, troll, flamebait, or otherwise not worth reading.
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>>"Google maintains a lifetime cookie that expires in 2038" is contradictory.
Thats the end of the world in UNIX. It can't be set to expire at any later date.. - Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so!!!! Luckily our courts are bloated as hell. I just wish everyone who gets sued just decided to defend themselves, expend no money and demand a jury trial. You have any idea how long it would take???/ The RIAA wouldnt get around to suing you for dling music today untill 2095 by which time you will be priating your holograms into iHolo after finding a bombardment file on Yahooglosoft so you can use your bytebombardment program. Quit settling!!! Our judicial system counts on us not going to trial, if we started going wasting all the tax dollars to try you for getting something only valued at 20 bucks which you could easily assume you have full rights to get the law will change.
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My guess is that around 77% of people who DO know that google (and all other websites out there) "records personal data" don't give a flying *****.
- jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old News! Clear and disable... Cased Closed.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0do no evil...sure
This is kinda moot though isnt it? I mean, we should all know by now companies do this, but we should still be wondering why. - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(In my best Norm MacDonald voice) In a related story, studies show that 77% of all people are borderline mentally retarded.
- sirmasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you can dissable the google cookie... it isn't essential for google to function.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I KNEW, and I'm not too swift... So, if I know and 77% of whats left doesn't know, then they are practicing ignorance.... You can bet they sell statistics, without names of course, and have for some time. A tidy profit in that, you know....
Cyborg
yes,for the other 77% - theendcrazyeye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% users = pwnt.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"we should all BOYCOTT GOOGLE if they give out our private information to the Corrupt American Government!"
How about we just boycott America? Wouldn't everything be done faster? 'cause everywhere does this now, the only way to get true privacy on the internet is to not be on the internet! Live with it! - sark666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can understand google keeping search terms and tracking trends, whats popular, or whatever else they can extract from our search terms, but it crosses the line when they associate all my past/present/future searches with my ip address. Does this only occur when using goolge personalized search? Then it would be associated with a login, which I as a user have the option to use or not. But if it's always happening logging my ip with seaches with no opt out, then I don't really feel comfortable with that. Do all search engines have a similar practice?
- h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok seriously... why do you people keep linking to the register. It's like the rquirer of the internet.
- gayle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+023% do know? Wow. What percentage understand the question? What does "personal data" mean? Is your IP address personal data? In that case, with a bit of javascript, any website can record "personal data".
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% of users need to have their license to internet revoked.
Now honestly, this is a real problem. Has nothing to do with Google, just the internet in general. The mass of people are utterly ignorant about how much information their service providers collect about them. It's fortunate that Google is fighting turning this data over but lets face it MSN and Yahoo! handed it over with a fight. Most companies have no qualms about betraying customer confidence. Sad Sad world. - rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+099.9% of everything klfan87 says is utter ***** and can be ignored.
Anyhow, I couldn't give a ***** if they record my IP and my search resaults, why? Because nobody would find anything interesting in them.
However, if they where really collecting personal data, like names, addresses, sex and more, I would care. Then again, I use gmail for my email so they already know all that. - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% don't know. 23% don't care.
- aksangrav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+099.9% of Internet users doesn't know how a huge company lives. It's not being evil. It's just being a leeding company.
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% don't "know" that it does, because they know that it doesn't!
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless they are referring o the BETA, OK. Piss poorly worded title, then.
Change the title on a resubmit or get outa dodge! - russizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0surprise: people are ignorant.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pathetic google gets a bad rep by some people before this and now they are like the only ones standing against the gov yet all other major search engines subcumbed and no one cares that msn is giving their search records away but OMG google can't even be suspicioned of doing such a thing without it damaging everyone.
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How to block the google tracking cookie. I wrote this a year ago but it still applies:
http://www.everythingisnt.com/archives/00002067.htm - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who the hell cares what I'm doing on the Internet other than my wife? No one.
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% of google users don't know the difference between the internet and the web.
Eric Wilson - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i guess i'm a part of that 23%.
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this sound like the old gmail stupidity back in the day...everybody was pissed the google would 'read your mail' and keep track of your information, and all because google uses keywords in the email to create adds. For all you morons out there, google doesn't care about your pathetic life, they just want you to use it more so you can see more of those pseudo relevent adds so they can make more money and make their investors lots of money. A brand name like google wont screw its customers, because investors will find out and sell their stocks because they know customers will bail.
- Mofo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey you guys are concerned about google? Just think about your isp? They know everything that you put into google, plus everything else you do and record it. Cox/Comcast/SBC/Verizon etc. know your every move.
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"90% of statistics are made up"
one of my favorite quotes....alothough it works better when you say something like "89.3% of statistics are made up"
Anyways....what do you expect from people they're ignorant morons. - cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% of Internet users don't know that _everything_ you do on the Internet is recorded by somebody with your personal IP address attached. Get over it.
- lennox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is this on the front page? Ever heard of proxies? Oh thats right, 99% of people who dugg this are morons.
- sofa0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+077% of the data I submit to google is random crap that my cat/dog type in.
- topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ummmm.... no it doesn't. Unless you install searchbar and click "enable advanced features".
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"""""But if it's always happening logging my ip with seaches with no opt out, then I don't really feel comfortable with that. """""
Every site you visit does that almost every time. Get used to it or use tor with privoxy.
Eric Wilson - twalker294, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good lord...so they know your IP address. Who gives a flying *****? This whole "internet privacy" thing has gotten way out of hand.
- ratsg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>>"Google maintains a lifetime cookie that expires in 2038" is contradictory.
>Thats the end of the world in UNIX. It can't be set to expire at any later date.
the end of the world for 32 bit unix. Most real unix's, running on risc platforms, have been 64 bit for some time. I'm not sure about the HP PARC chip though. - NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering people with the internet still fall prey to Phishing scams, and send emails to AOL to try and get "their name removed from the database at http://mike.hunt.isgay.com", I feel that Google collecting information on people is rather low on the list of e-dangers.
The most dangerous thing on the internet is the users. - klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google simply wants to make its search engine better so it will turn up more relevent results so you wont go and use something like yahoo. About 90% of my searches through google are for technichal documentation of one type or another....it would be nice if google wouldn't display 100 million results when I'm looking for something obscure like limbo (the programming language). Yes, I know I can use quotes and do advanced searches but thats a pain in the ass, I know what im looking for, and google should be able to make an educated guess after I search for 10 million things like it.
- GarethSaxby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Assuming by this, now 100% of Google users know it records their data? Because surely, if every single Google user filled out a poll with the question "Did you know before this that Google records personal data?", they surely know now? Oh, sorry... It's only out of 1,000 people. Again, by (ab)using statistics, another news website has come out with a "Shocking" headline that, for all intents and purposes, means ***** all. It's impossible to get any real answers from an opinion poll... Maybe they should put it on the next Census in the UK? Hmm?
Anyway, rant over, but this is a rather pointless "Headline" from The Register. I really do wish people wouldn't resort to shock tactics through the use of poor statistics; The number of users will be much higher, any logical thinker will realise that. - schwit61, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid article that only an IDIOT would believe.
"Google maintains a lifetime cookie that expires in 2038" is contradictory. First off it's either a lifetime cookie or it has an expiration date, it can't be both. Second, the user ultimately controls cookies, not web sites. To maintain privacy only allow the setting of session cookies and disable all 3rd party cookies.
IP addresses are not personal information. - arniemg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you noticed that the Register only writes opinionated, unfavorable, "news" of Google? The Register has a vendetta against them.
- Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0lol how can you not know!
i mean its easy as pie to record IP's and what they search for. and when they have the gmail cookies google can check ur gmail/google acount with there DB as see who you are....
