- abbathdoom, on 10/08/2008, -2/+78If only the RIAA and the MPAA had the intelligence and integrity of Ars Technica, surely the best tech news site on the planet.
- pigfister, on 10/08/2008, -1/+55What bull *****.
- eddywin, on 10/08/2008, -1/+49downloading DRM-Free mp3's funds terrorism
- Bauer22, on 10/08/2008, -1/+48So it's wrong for a large group of people to "steal" $250 Billion dollars by P2P download yet it's OK to give greedy CEOs $700 Billion of tax payers' money? Am I the only one seeing something ***** up here?
- idavidtang, on 10/08/2008, -1/+39Statistics have shown that each illegal download results in a death of a kitten.
- spikes, on 10/08/2008, -4/+41So if I download AC/DC Black Ice, and put my $15 saved towards Gears of War 2 this November, the loss to the economy is what again?
- MikeSobe, on 10/08/2008, -1/+28Another incredibly well researched and written article from Ars.
- sk11, on 10/08/2008, -2/+24Music industry: p2p sharing has cost us 10 thousand dollars!!
Mainstream media: hahaha, you idiots: it's 2008, that's a trivial amount of money these days.
Music industry: ok, then it's cost us 100 trillion dollars!!
Mainstream media: bwhahahaha, the country as a whole doesn't make close to that much money, wanna try again?
Music industry: fine, so let's make it 200 billion - 250 billion dollars!
Mainstream media: yeah, ok that sounds a lot more plausible. - Niteryder, on 10/08/2008, -1/+22Funny that this came up again, historically they have
used the same numbers since around 2001 with no
factual basis, except to scam the government and a
ppointing themselves vigilantes of the internet, to
scam organizations and the general
public for purposes of self enrichment. - abelandable, on 10/08/2008, -1/+20No modchip.
- subterfuge, on 10/08/2008, -0/+19is $200-$250 billion how much lawyers have been paid so far in cases regarding piracy?
- wally40, on 10/08/2008, -1/+18Should forward this article onto a couple politicians!!!
- temsi, on 10/08/2008, -2/+19Actually, since that album is available exclusively through Wal*Mart, a case could be made that by not giving them your money, you're actually helping the economy, since the presence of Wal*Mart in any state results in a net loss of money for that state, all things considered.
- benicillin1, on 10/08/2008, -2/+19not necessarily. maybe he would have been 15 bucks short of buying gears of war if he purchased the AC/DC cd. in that case, downloading AC/DC facilitated one more purchase of gears of war 2, therefore benefitting the economy by $45 ($60 - $15)... GENIUS! ...
- inactive, on 10/08/2008, -1/+13Does this include jobs lost by people caught P2Ping at work?
- Lewie, on 10/08/2008, -0/+12Socialist? You mean to say that Walmart execs share their profits with their employees? That all company decisions go through a democratic process involving all employees?
Or do you mean Authoritarian? Dictatorial? Capitalist? - RedShoulder, on 10/08/2008, -0/+10FTA: "...And we're making policy on the basis of our ignorance."
Sounds about right for a typical day in Washington DC. - anononon, on 10/08/2008, -0/+10I'm claiming otherwise.
:( - piranhaa, on 10/08/2008, -2/+12Who says piracy doesn't CREATE jobs and purchases? What if someone wants to gain some proficiency in learning a certain program (ie: Photoshop, Windows Server, Exchange, etc), yet doesn't have the resources to do that? What if (s)he downloads that certain program and becomes a master at it (making NO MONEY off it)? THEN, they proceed to get hired on at a company that doesn't have this software yet, purchases licenses and then sets it up. Hmm, there are now copies of copies PURCHASED from the vendor.
However, these numbers aren't looked at. They look at the copy (s)he downloaded and tacks that to the tally of money they 'COULD' have received even though there's no way in hell (s)he/he would have purchased it in the first place.
I know as a fact this happens. This happened to me. - snatchmstr, on 10/08/2008, -0/+9Thats a lot of jobs lost due to piracy in 1986. I guess p2p was rampant 22 years ago huh?
- MScrip, on 10/08/2008, -0/+8Exactly. $250 billion dollars that could have "potentially" been used to purchase music.
Or, billions of "real" dollars that gets wasted or given to CEOs of bankrupt companies.
Have any record companies gone bankrupt because of piracy? Have any had to be bailed out because of low income? Even though CDs sales are "down" they still makes plenty of money. And now that digital sales are picking up, there's even more money for them.
Record companies, as much as we hate them, have a good "record" of profits. :) - All4not, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7200 billion is chump change. Now we bailout companies with 4 times that amount.
- petefic, on 10/08/2008, -1/+8So whats with the dawn of the dead thumbnail?
- theonlywizdum, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7"illegal copyright infringement" as opposed to legal copyright infringement?
- gothicform, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7If only as much effort was put into nailing the bankers who have ***** the world economy up as it is catching 12 year old kids and grannies downloading an MP3. Imagine how much better the world would be if we had our priorities right...
- gandhii, on 10/08/2008, -1/+7digg is an aggregator .. NOT a news site.
- bradhart2, on 10/08/2008, -3/+9These people lie so much they could work for McCain
- uber, on 10/08/2008, -0/+6Now way ... what about all of the new high paying Legal jobs they manufactured.
Plus think of all the money they put into the economy making campaign contributions to influence Law makers. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5I think he meant that Digg used to be about Technology and had "intelligence and integrity"... Times have changed....
- keithloughnane, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6They owe me a billian dollars in lost revenue for stuff they didn't buy off of me.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6live in the now
- ventaur, on 10/08/2008, -0/+587% of all statistics are made-up.
- johanrocks, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4That statement makes no sense...
It's either 45% alcohol (which is 90 proof), or 45 proof alcohol (which is 22.5%). You can't have 45% proof alcohol. - bradhart2, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4750,000 lost jobs is *****, that is far more than the recording industry actually employs around the world.
- lofispy, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4Well, let's put it into another context....I'm a broke *****, I admit it...what money I have goes to priorities, not "media", in all it's diverse and entertaining forms...so, seeing as how I wouldn't be buying a damn thing I didn't need anyways, D/Ling a movie, album, or game is neither adding OR taking away a damn thing from the economy...and brought to it's logical conclusion, still allows all the advertising and product placement within said "media" to be delivered to me, where as if I never pirated it, those ads would have never reached me...so, when you think about it, in my situation, I'm actually adding to these companies bottom lines by allowing their ads to reach me when they otherwise wouldn't. Not to mention, not having to spend money on what little entertainment I do desire allows to pay my bills on time, which helps keeps other companies afloat, and finally, allows me to be right here...arguing with the likes of you.
But finally, you are obviously missing the point, when it comes to information, the cat is out of the bag...information doesn't know borders or restrictions, and like it or not, companies and the law have to adapt....just holding on to the old ways doesn't do anybody a damn bit of good... - Ebue1, on 10/08/2008, -5/+9Thanks internets, you're the reason the US economy is going to *****
/sarcasm - kirado4, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4or better yet the movie houses could release the movie on the same day all around the world for ***** sake.. it's called technology get with the ***** time allready..
- Totz83, on 10/08/2008, -0/+445% proof alcohol makes statistics seem stupid
- veriix, on 10/08/2008, -0/+465% of all people know that already.
- Ferrel, on 10/08/2008, -1/+5That is the great thing about statistics, they can be works of fiction and made to serve your needs when taken out of context.
A poll of 2007 showed that Ferrel was correct 95% of the time on all things. It is a great idea to vote for Ferrel! - spool5, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3Incredible that such a figure could be used so widely, yet no one even knew what they were talking about. From '86...I mean come ON!
- Scrappy1850, on 10/08/2008, -5/+8why do you feel that epic is allowed to make money, but AC/DC is not?
- Blandyman, on 10/08/2008, -1/+4Some people don't even have the money for that, are barely getting by, things like that. They don't ave money to throw away on a program they aren't sure if they'll ever get good at.
- zephyr42, on 10/08/2008, -2/+5now THAT is Irony!
- lofispy, on 10/08/2008, -1/+4No...what's no secret is that the copyright laws that exist are broken and outdated....what's costing jobs and income is those like you who demand we hold onto the old ways even as the rest of us shine the line of progress on better paradigms and the new truth that information cannot be contained and parceled by those who would presume to be the gatekeepers of media.
- init100, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3What are you referring to? The article or the numbers? I'd say the article is excellent, while the numbers are BS.
- Totz83, on 10/08/2008, -2/+5I don't see why they need to exaggerate numbers to get a point across, theres no denying that if p2p keeps gaining popularity at the rate is is now that many people will lose there jobs. What they fail to realize is that the jobs could be replaced with legitimate careers if the "industrie(s)" embraced this new distribution method.
I think cam-versions are the big worry though, people should at least have the decency to wait until a movie is post release before they download it. - joearchy, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Well put, see that's what i dont get.
Sure I was a pirate, I downloaded COD4 and assassins creed.
But I played them and loved them, so I bought it.
Then again I bought Age of Conan and hated it! so I feel ripped off. - maus56, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2My somewhat inelegant assessment: What a steaming pile of crap!
- randumbusername, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2to hell with them. we just got stuck with a multibillion dollar price tag; ***** the film/music industry.
