- Phocion55, on 02/19/2008, -13/+83Why are people making it seem like HD-DVD players are going to all of a sudden synchronously spontaneous combust?
- Ganja420, on 02/19/2008, -9/+72Because the players were 99$ as compared to 399$
- czimmerman, on 02/19/2008, -19/+67My family is one of those casualties. Some of my kids, like Hot Fuzz, Children of Men, Mallrats, Seed of Chucky, the Big Lebowski, and others aren't going to have Momma Toshiba around anymore to be there for them. Daddy's going to have to take care of them, make them some cocoa, and tell them that "everything's going to be alright, buddy."
Its a sad day for HD DVD, which just like Toshiba has been saying, WAS the superior format. The only thing is had to its disadvantage was disc space, and as far I can remember, there was not an issue in its lifespan regarding running out of space when content was being created. Oh well. You just wait, Blu-ray, you just wait... - GunbladeVIII, on 02/19/2008, -3/+40Hey, it's the price you pay for being an early adopter. In exchange for paying higher prices and risking buying an obsolete format, you get to enjoy HD movies earler than everyone else. Some think it's worth the risk. I don't, and that's why I sat the format war out.
It wasn't hard. It feels a lot better to know you're going to be on the winning side, and to pay lower prices, all while I still enjoyed upconverted DVDs. - scoottie, on 02/19/2008, -4/+39Seriously stop with the redundant stories about HD-DVD
- fcrow, on 02/19/2008, -5/+38It's nice to see there is finally a winner, but just wished it was HD DVD since it *already* has cheap players, region free (discs), cheaper production, every player has a network connection and PiP, easier advanced mode for cool stuff like games, etc.
But alright Blu-ray has won, let's move on and enjoy HD.. - manfrin, on 02/19/2008, -1/+32Why are you making this an issue of nationality?
- Topher06, on 02/19/2008, -5/+34Now that the war is over, I am over it too. Lets move on, nothing to see here.
- Ganja420, on 02/19/2008, -1/+29LG isn't gonna dump the format http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/12929 ...
- GeorgeStone2, on 02/19/2008, -0/+23All that HDDVD key fiasco over nothing..
- PawFox, on 02/19/2008, -1/+20HD vs Blu-Ray in animated gif format: http://i26.tinypic.com/21jc7pf.gif
- bigfatpaulie, on 02/19/2008, -1/+19Getting really old engadget...
- rajun50, on 02/19/2008, -2/+19How do you loose a war?
- lemorex, on 02/19/2008, -4/+20I paid $170 for my HD-DVD drive. It came with Heroes and 7 free movies($260 worth of HD DVDs). I would say the investment was worth it, even thought it's obsolete now, I'd do it again.
- lexbaby, on 02/19/2008, -1/+17Well, Duh. For the people that have an HD-DVD collection and now need a Blu-Ray player, LG is continuing to manufacture a dual format player. I'm sure it will not be for the long term.
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -2/+17Thank you for the demonstration.
- Jaq524, on 02/19/2008, -3/+18Dictionary.com first definition:
1.occurring at the same time; coinciding in time; contemporaneous; simultaneous.
What's the problem exactly? - FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -2/+16Meanwhile, Engadget (and the rest of the techie blogs) are making a mint in advertising dollars while you saps keep Digging their redundant stories. Enough with this crap already, we know it's over... now stop posting news about it already. Move on with your ***** life.
- logicalnoise, on 02/19/2008, -8/+21me buying the HD-DVD drive had nothing to do with sony and everything to do with price and convenience and at the time a good deal on a good player.
- greysun, on 02/19/2008, -6/+19'Superior Format' is subjective... for most people, they'll just want picture and sound quality, and more space means Blu-Ray wins on both.
I did like the software features of HDDVD, though. - monkeyhoward, on 02/20/2008, -1/+13Don't forgets p0rn
- sockpuppets, on 02/19/2008, -1/+12These stories about HD-DVD are getting seriously redundant, please stop.
- quomen, on 02/19/2008, -6/+17I asked your mom that last night.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -17/+28Ron Paul, HD-DVD...... Seems like so many things that are popular with Diggers turn out to be not that hot.
- djrbx, on 02/19/2008, -1/+12I wonder how it would've turned out if Microsoft included the HD-DVD player in the 360 instead of having it as an add on option.
- Maddoktor2, on 02/19/2008, -6/+16Good ol' SONY - bringing rootkits and obsolete platforms to your home for profit - welcome to the Betamax club, HD-DVD.
- dagamer34, on 02/19/2008, -5/+15Even people who have already bought a Bluray player (besides the PS3) are likely to be screwed by these "profiles".
- danjwray, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9Now just hold on for the next profile and you're golden.
- geoken, on 02/19/2008, -9/+18Yeah, it must be Sony hate. The fact that HD-DVD players were way cheaper couldn't have had anything to do with it.
As far as technical superiority, most people don't care about anything beyond the fact that both players can play a 1080p movie. - quomen, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10Admit it, Toshiba did ***** to promote their format. They seemed to be complacent about it the whole way through. I don't ever recall seeing a HD-DVD commercial while i've seen hundreds (not literally) of PS3/Blu-Ray adverts.
- sroop, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10War, UGH, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing
- frontporsche, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10Agreed. Oh, except for the region code thing.
- ZigVicious, on 02/19/2008, -2/+10where do violas come into it?
- FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8I don't think it's worth it yet. higher clarity doesn't warrant the premium prices we're looking at.
- Jayg28, on 02/20/2008, -0/+8Because they cost 5 times more and were 100x less available.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -7/+15You have a poor understanding of simple economics. I suggest you take a basic economics course and then LISTEN and study.
- pHr34kY, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7'lo Bob! I like your avatar!
HD-DVD can join Betamax, MiniDisc, UMD, Video8, Hi8, Memory Stick... wait... is this the FIRST Sony format to EVER win a format war? - mywhitenoise, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8They still have to win over the DVD audience, you dumb *****.
- veloscaper, on 02/19/2008, -3/+10It's a trap. They want you rush out and buy BD+ DRM.
- staticneuron, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7HD-DVD about these stories with the redundant stop seriously.
oh...... I think I did it wrong. - jeb69, on 02/19/2008, -15/+22Sony just had more money to put into the war I guess. It just sucks cause there won't be any competitive pricing.
- lastrite, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8Meh my player will still get plenty of use, there are nearly 1000 films out and most will sell for dirt cheap on Ebay.
- SpongeBad, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8It would've turned out with the 360 launching a year later at the same price as the PS3. In other words...not good.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+61080p /sarcasm
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -5/+11enough with this DRM *****, I pop in the movie in my player...I watch it.....goes back in its case...how does DRM affect it?
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6So I'm supposed to feel sorry about those early adopters? They knew what they were getting themselves into buying a format in a war that only one would win. *****.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7What is the bigger picture?
- Gabberwok, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7Does this mean the MPAA will stop creating new forms of encryption for DVDs and start focusing on a format I will never adopt? I certainly hope so...
- onlynameicanget, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7"Define: *****!"
moth·er·*****·er /ˈmʌðərˌfʌkər/
–noun
Slang: Vulgar.
1. a mean, despicable, or vicious person.
2. anything considered to be despicable, frustrating, etc. (used as a general expression of contempt or anger).
—Related forms
moth·er·*****·ing, adjective - givemereplay, on 02/19/2008, -4/+9These backroom deals are anti-competitive and have allowed blu-ray to set up a market monopoly with no consumer input. The result of this war will hurt all consumers who would have otherwise benefited from continuing competition between the brands.
