- iherbivore, on 10/10/2007, -4/+208--less than 10 percent decide to close an overlay, which they can exit by clicking on an "X" in a corner--
I still get a tingle of fear when closing some form of window spawned from my browser, too many bad memories of the 'X' seeming to mean 'open a thousand new windows here' - knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -18/+73I'm going to be dugg down for speaking the truth, which people don't like hearing...people are used to getting everything without nothing in return, especially this crowd. Something's gotta give. It doesn't have to be 20 minutes of commercials for a one hour show, but people don't make shows for free folks...
- ollj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+54I am in the 70%, because there usually are alternatives that do not waste my free time.
Worst are advertising videos before a video that (try to) disable your browsers ability to close the window/tab. - GvnMcCld, on 10/10/2007, -0/+48The worst one is the link that says "Close This Window"
- michaelnew20, on 10/10/2007, -9/+53Just another way that Google will take over the world. Overlay's stink!
- pedo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+46I use BitTorrent to avoid commercials. I use YouTube because I don't like to wait.
- h4ppydotcom, on 11/07/2007, -3/+40I am one of the 100% who feels thoroughly ticked off and annoyed when a DVD he has bought and paid for insists on showing animations of the production company's logo, copyright notices and trailers for films that I've already seen. And they show EVERY time I try to watch the DVD. And the SKIP/MENU commands are disabled so I have to sit through them, or insert the DVD then go make the popcorn and come back 5 minutes later.
What gives? I've paid already - let me get to the movie! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+38I like the ads that don't lock out seeking. One click and the ad is finished before it ever started.
- Smegzor, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27I'm hoping someone comes up with a GreaseMonkey script to remove these new overlay ads.
- rova, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Of course they stop watching the video. To me its a percentage thing. I am not going to watch a 10 second advert before a 20 second video. I wouldn't watch a 10 minute one before a 20 minute video either.
Also, when I'm in 'web mode' I now have a wait time of about three seconds. If any page load is taking more than that I start looking for the back or home button. The joys of broadband. - rusty0101, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24No, worst are pre-rolls for videos that don't roll to the video. IMDB has been particularly bad about this in my experience.
- KraigR, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28I happen to be one of the 30% who is pissed off enough by the ad that im not gonna let it take over my video...and im one of the 10 % who close overlays, and any other ad that i possibly can
- ajbalash, on 10/10/2007, -8/+29Dugg down because the whole idea of YouTube is that people DO make shows for free. The ads aren't to attract people to make videos, there are obviously plenty of people that enjoy doing it for free. Commissions from the ads will give YouTube/Google a huge source of revenue to begin offsetting the cost of bandwidth.
- bungoman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22No, it just goes to show that people are ***** fed up with advertisements.
- fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Who do you expect to foot the bill for the massive operating costs? Google does stuff for money not warm fuzzies.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I wouldn't Steal a car, but when I buy one I also wouldn't expect it to tell me that stealing a car is wrong everytime I try to start the ***** thing either, and not letting me start it until it's finished bitching at me.
- pedo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16uh that has nothing to do with attention spans. it has to do with not liking ads... and not wanting to spend time looking at them.
- cnldelta, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17If I see a fricking ad in front of a video I or my friends made, I'm pulling out of youtube!
- seanwyx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Only 70?!
- SCStephen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11there is one overlay on either "break" or "hallpass" that doesn't have the "X" or "Close This Window"... and while we are on the subject of advertisements, I can't stand those stupid "Free iPod" talking ads... come on... /rant
- Smiley09, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I'd like to think that the majority of people wouldn't stand for a flat 10s advert to watch a 5s video of a squirrel turning around dramatically...
Make it dependent on length, with a maximum, if advertisements are absolutely needed to keep it free? - fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Isn't the majority of stuff on YouTube already made for free by people with too much free time or taken off the air that's already been paid for by advertisements. Don't even get me started on how I have to still watch ads after already paying for the damn channel.
- FizixMan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Even better are the ones that show a non-skippable anti-piracy video first thing each and every time you pop in the DVD.
- crlake, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Yes... if I wanted to see a commercial, I watch TV. But since I've stop watching regular TV, then obviously I DON'T want to see commercials. I will just stop watching YOUTUBE and move on to something else. There's 100's of other websites with video on it --- Next.
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Too ***** true. I'm sick and tired of seeing advertisements EVERYWHERE. It's ridiculous now. Hell, they're on people now! I don't want to spend my life being advertised to at all times. As much as I'm sure an advertisement helps sell something, I don't buy something unless I'm looking to buy something. Always advertising something to me is just going to make me hate your damn product even more.
- drevin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10It wouldn't be so bad if the commercials weren't so god awful.I fkin hate Axe spray now.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10For the 61,319th time: Sorry Google, the future in advertising is product placement. See Transformers for How To.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Welcome to the Internet. Here's your complimentary skin thickening lotion, and a bottle of our new "Sand-B-Gone" vaginal cleanser.
- chocolatetacos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Why watch a post-roll commercial?
- h4ppydotcom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7... but Alt-F4 would close the window/browser not just the overlay!
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Perhaps the fact that 90% of overlays set the transparency of the x to 100 and never put it in a uniform place has something to do with why noone closes them?
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Overlays stink yes. What about the post-roll commercial videos like they have/had on Google Video? Those where nice
- Schmidtopolis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6And your site caters to my needs how? There's 12, 000 other sites that no doubt do what you do, and with no ads. So come on... sell me. Ohhh wait, nah, I want someone who's not selling anything but content.
- locojones, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Overlays or not, it will no longer matter because this will signify the death knell of Youtube. You see, the only reason Youtube still exists at all is because it can claim Safe Harbor protection under the DMCA. As part of the requirements to qualify for Safe Harbor protection, a service provider cannot monetize the content. See 17 USC 512(c)(1)(B) ("does not receive a financial benefit directly attributable to the infringing activity").
Once YouTube starts running ads, it starts monetizing any copyrighted content on the system. Once it is no longer eligible for Safe Harbor protection, then the real lawsuits can begin and we can finally be done with it. - AvengeX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6They'd need to hack the Flash player. Not sure if that's possible with JavaScript, but hats off to the person who inevitably manages it.
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+510 second adverts are too long. Try 5 second adverts put into every 5th video shown and see how that affects stats! I wouldnt be surprised if the 70/30 is flipped.People like a free-ride on the internet but shifting all that video costs money.Just make the adverts bearable and its not such a problem. Meet us half way Google!
- Schmidtopolis, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Pay for access to what? The next man? Youtube is expendable, thus is the nature of the internet. Either pander to your audience, or die. You want to feed use ads like TV, we'll move on to those who don't.
- jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Any talking ads piss me off. Namely because I forget to turn my sound down, go to a torrent site or something and suddenly hear porn type ads blasting from my speakers, and so does everyone in the house. "WANT TO MEET FREE HOT GIRLS IN YOUR AREA??"
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah advertising doesn't really work here. I'm tempted to see what link that is, but I'm not going to.
- kaffein, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Advertisers will have to adapt and make 9 second long advertisements similar to: http://youtube.com/watch?v=smUCdkx-YGQ
Only 9 seconds... - actorboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"...'Free iPod' talking ads..."
The new midi. - Dustmuffins, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Ah, the good old days of IE...
- Subliminational, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That only happened to me on porn sites....
- vandy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5revenue does not equal profit. there has to be enormous costs in bandwidth for that site.
- ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I use Adblock with a block list of my own creation. I'm sorry if content developers don't like it, but with the way HTTP works, I make a point of only downloading the files described in a page layout that I'm interested in.
With videos, if there's an ad playing before them, or overlayed on them, that I don't like and can't easily block, I just close the page.
That's my choice. Not viewing ads is functionally no different than making a point not to buy anything you see advertised. So why waste everyone's time downloading them in the first place?
If non-video pages find a way to stop me from seeing them too without downloading things I don't want to see; fine. There's still a WHOLE lot of internet out there. - jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Yeah that video cracks me up every time. "you wouldn't steal a car..."
- tempusrob, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sad thing is, they're lecturing to the people who *went out and bought the movie.* The ripped BT version is going to have all that crap stripped.
- drachemorder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't mind a skippable commercial --- if it's interesting I'll let it play, but why should I be forced to watch a commercial once I know I'm not interested in what it's selling?
Maybe if they let you skip it after the first few seconds, that would be a decent compromise... - drachemorder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"Where before you watch a trailer of that sweet new game coming out, you have to watch a damn car commercial."
So, you have to watch a commercial before you can watch a commercial. What's the world coming to? - arjung, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5i think the google lawyers know exactly what they're doing (no offense). if this choice really would cause the service to be shut down, they wouldnt pursue it.
