- xer0five, on 11/09/2009, -1/+46***** DRAGON AGE!
- dvsbastard, on 11/09/2009, -1/+31These aren't ways to set up dual monitors... These are simply suggestions of what you *could* do with dual monitors... And honestly, there are a lot more than just 6 things (Personally I wouldn't want to work with out dual monitors)...
P.S. ***** these new Digg background image ads... It feels like a god damn myspace page now... - mariuspiatek, on 11/08/2009, -2/+16Dual monitors are absolutely a must if you work on a computer. (Unless you have a 30" wide screen or so)
As a designer and developer I run an iMac with a 24" wide screen monitor and i could use one more on the other side.
It is just so much easier and faster to find what you need. - barnettatron, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9One word Ultramon. Get it.
- blcarmadillo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8If only they'd fix the darn flash players to allow you to watch full screen video on the one screen while you're working on the other. It's been awhile since I tried with hulu but my past experience has been that the second I click on anything on the other monitor the full screen video shrinks down to its in page size.
- somebodyscream, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7And anyone who uses a dual monitor set up probably already does all of this. Probably why they installed a second monitor to begin with...
- TexasMd91, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6I wouldn't know what to do without my dual monitors.
Usually on hulu while working/web browsing/etc. Its pretty much a TV screen that can be turned into a second work screen when needed. - Maynza, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6You know what doesn't run on dual monitors? Dragon age origins.
- MAGZine, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5right? these are everyday applications of dual monitors - nothing groundbreaking/new.
- legoalert33, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Work + porn?
- doshindude, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3This article states the obvious...Without any of those things listed, nobody would have any use for dual monitors.
- Ghostalker, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3FTA: "I work on my computer a lot. I use many different programs depending on my task at hand. I am constantly monitoring different sources of information, from RSS feeds, several different email boxes, social networking streams, and different blog commenting threads."
This person does NOT need multiple monitors. He needs multiple friends, preferably ones he interacts with in real life. - AndrewDB, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3I run WoW in Windowed Mode and I use WoW Wiki and Thottbot and etc up on the secondary monitor. It's a beautiful system and works wonders during raids.
- dgendreau, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3desktop + laptop + SynergyPlus = win
- Knowone, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3I was thinking the same thing. This is annoying I guess I'll finally start using Ad Blocker Plus.
- dirtbox, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Needs more Ultramon.
- PFS1, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Multiple desktop help too. Even with dual monitors, I feel claustrophobic when I come back to windows after doing work with my KDE setup.
- cJw314, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Long, long AdBlocked.
- wizardfingers, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2shouldn't this be titled "6 Ways Dual Monitors Can Increase Productivity"
but good article I can't wait to get an extra monitor I've got this huge CRT and its a pain definitely getting two nice LCDs on Black Friday. - desertDenizen, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Dual 24 inchers... nothing less. I keep the 2nd one turned off about 50% of the time, but when it's on, it's essential. I can have a sitemap open, a wireframes doc, and a browser open all side by side, which makes checking our developers' work a snap. I can't imagine trying to do it by toggling back and forth. Actually, I can imagine it, because I still have to operate that way when I'm on a laptop, which sucks.
I actually just bought a third 24", which I expect to keep on full-time to display things like TweetDeck, traffic stats, FaceBook, etc., like a home-based Web marketing/BI command center of sorts.
Any other suggestions out there for the full-time marketing console? Presumably stocks too, when in the market. (***** weather reports... I live in Arizona, it's sunny and hot.) - benoitcsirois, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2So basically all 6 points can be described by "not need to alt-tab as much"
- Atario, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Hey, everyone, did you hear Dragon Age™ is in stores now?
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-- - burketo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Completely agree. There's two little thumb buttons on my mouse which I recently mapped to left and right desktop switching. Honestly if you have something like that on your mouse you should try it. it was like discovering an extra arm or something. Between that and dual screens I have more space than I need.
With all that, trying to get stuff done on a one monitor windows setup just feels slow and cumbersome. - brundlefly76, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I run my security cam on the second monitor to make sure the doorbell or dog barking isn't something I need to be interrupted for.
I actually run a Mac OS on primary 24" and Windows box on secondary, with Synergy allowing me to use kb and mouse as if same computer. - neutron7, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1They forgot the biggest one for me which is moving the palettes, panels etc from 3ds max and photoshop off the the second monitor.
- michaelarana, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1love ultramon, it works wonders
- artfiend77, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1More calls? Gmail? Youtube?
More like 3 ways to be productive and 3 ways to waste time. - Tenareth, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Oh come on, it was only 20+ years ago that UNIX had default support for multiple monitors. They tend to average 30 years behind the technology cycle.
- ampdj89, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1©
- DharmaTurtle, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1What the ***** the ad actually NARROWS the comment section. I woudln't mind background ads like this if it didn't resize things.
- cJw314, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1But, but then you couldn't see the helpful ADS that are paying for your "FREE" shows.
- cJw314, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1You use a thumb button to move your mouse cursor between monitors? Is this the zenith where efficiency meets laziness?
- skcolb, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Dual monitors are awesome, but if you have to be told how to make them work well, you're doing it wrong.
- blcarmadillo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1@fryguy1013
You learn something new every day. Thanks for the info and link to the tutorial. - Polycarp87, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2But if you set up two monitors, then it can be twice as useless!
- Vusys, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1It misses playing games on both monitors. Something like balldroppings or pong. The novelty of watching a white dot on a black background bounce between monitors still hasn't worn off for me.
- fryguy1013, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1There is a way to make flash not do that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwH_-C2-93E
Basically it's a safety mechanism. If the developer of the "press esc to un-fullscreen" thing did a bad job, then you could potentially be stuck with that window full screen and unable to get to the windows underneath. With two monitors, it's not a problem, because you have two monitors :) - JammoBlammo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I don't even want to get into how many help threads I see for getting multimon up in Linux environments. The only thing people bitch about multimon under Windows is proper taskbar scaling.
- CaviMike, on 11/09/2009, -0/+16 WAYS? Don't they mean 6 USES?
- JammoBlammo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1If you click the full screen and back to your other monitor a few times in succession, you will eventually gimp the flash window into staying fullscreen.
- blcarmadillo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1...hulu advertisements consist of video ads placed at various points throughout the program you're watching not on the web page. So, instead the ads may be more effective if they were full screen then when they're in the little flash player on the web page.
- egemenbor, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1ive got a 24" and a 19" running side by side..not that i need but i had a spare 19" lying around so i thought what the hell might as well use it..still havent gotten used to having 2 monitors running at the same time since i still tend to bunch up all my windows on the same monitor but ill get used to it eventually..and yeh this article is useless..
- Xugg, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Black Zune Windows theme for the win.
- efitz11, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1where i work, every workstation comes with 3 20" 4:3 monitors. makes me wish i had the same setup at home
- proverbs17, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Love dual monitors. Can't work without them.
I can always tell if a person barely uses computer because they ask "why do you have 2 monitors". People that use computers all of the time know why and don't have to ask....... - blcarmadillo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1@JammoBlammo
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that.
@efitz11
Good point. - efitz11, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1i've experimented with virtual desktops and have yet to find something useful with them. yes, there is more screen space but if you can't see it, whats the point?
- efitz11, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1hulu desktop ftw! no full screen problem
- burketo, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1no no. Multiple desktops is different to multiple monitors.
Here this will give you an idea (about 20 seconds in): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfnzfmagHr0 -
