- Grumpymonk, on 11/02/2009, -8/+245I dont even pirate crappy remakes let alone buy them. I dont want their crappy movies for free anyway. The good ones get bought.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -12/+162The Main Stream Media gets something wrong again, big surprise.
- HeyyyJoe, on 11/02/2009, -25/+175"What a load of crap. The reason they make so many crappy movies is because they don't know what consumers want and their model consists of producing five movies, with the hope that one will be a blockbuster. That's always been the movie business and it has nothing to do with piracy on the web."
Piracy is like natural-selection of the movie industry. If your movie is crappy, I wont download it and certainly wont buy it. Piracy increases competition within the movie industry for better quality movies. - JoEBlack982, on 11/02/2009, -29/+147It's pretty funny to see all the pirates freak out because they thought it was one-sided (which it was). If you're like me, you steal ***** cause you can, not because it's a right. Face it, we're ***** and have to stop pretending like we're "stickin it to the man". We're not. So shut the ***** up and just be happy we get all this ***** for free.
- Ryuuken117, on 11/02/2009, -13/+130Remember kiddies: digital piracy is a gateway crime. Before you know it, you'll be running down old ladies in a BMW full of pirated copies of "10,000 BC" while you drink cocaine-laced absinthe and digitally distribute gay pornography to schoolchildren on your secondhand hackintosh netbook.
- viggooo, on 11/02/2009, -6/+111This, amazingly, is still relevant:
http://eirikso.com/2005/06/06/how-bob-the-milliona ... - Cerebron, on 11/02/2009, -8/+88You wouldn't shoot a policeman.
And then steal his helmet. You wouldn't go to the toilet in his helmet. And then send it to the policeman's grieving widow. And then steal it again! Downloading films is stealing. If you do it, you will face the consequences. - enantiodromia, on 11/02/2009, -7/+69Software piracy has been around a lot longer than movie piracy, in it's modern form. The video game industry is now bigger than the movie industry.
Seems like software companies were smart, and the movie industry has so far been dumb. - spookyttws, on 11/02/2009, -7/+69Yeah, and the fact that movie tickets go up $2 a year nothing to do with it. 10 years ago I could see a Matinee for $4, $6 after 5. Now it's hard to find a theater that charges less than $14 a ticket for a hit or miss movie. Oh, and the the AMC by my house continues the matinee tradition by offering us an $8 ticket if your movie starts before Noon. What a bargain!
- WeAreDejaVoodoo, on 11/02/2009, -10/+67***** THE MPAA!
- zclone, on 11/03/2009, -4/+43YOU ARE A PIRATE!!!
- JoEBlack982, on 11/02/2009, -12/+48Well that really wasn't my point. My point was that we DO THIS because WE CAN, not because IT'S RIGHT. Have the studios lost profit because of my personal content stealing? Of course. Here's an example. I'm looking forward to the movie Taken with Liam Neeson. It looked amazing, and I couldn''t wait for it to come out in theatres. Amazingly, a DVD rip shows up online at least a month before the U.S. release. So, I downloaded it and me and my friends watched in my home.
This is a movie I was definitely going to see in the theatres. But you know what, ***** it, I saw it the link online and snagged it thanks to some sneaky mofo's out there. Was it right? Hell no, but I did it because I could. So everyone needs to stop pretending that you're on a warpath by doing this. You're just a dick, like me. - dalittle, on 11/02/2009, -8/+44There are movies outside the Hollywood system and I cannot say I have seen a Hollywood movie in quite a while. If they want to try continue to treat me, the Customer, as a criminal screw them, I will spend my money else where.
- sloach, on 11/03/2009, -0/+29That could be because the crappy ones are only worth a download while the good ones are worth a trip to the cinema...
- slapded, on 11/02/2009, -4/+32i just tune in to 60 minutes to see Andy Roony's unkempt eyebrows.
- Muffinhunter, on 11/03/2009, -1/+29YARRR HARRR FIDDLE-DEE DEE
- MadLeper, on 11/02/2009, -10/+38The crappy movies appear to be downloaded more often than the "good" ones, pirates don't seem to have much more taste than the general movie goer.
So your saying that people not downloading crappy movies for free will convince the movie studios to make good movies, that you can download for free ? Strange logic there.. - XHashmeerX, on 11/02/2009, -2/+28I don't think I would go so far as saying software companies are "smart." They've used some pretty interesting systems of deterring piracy. Remember the key-code wheels? Now look at some of the horrendous DRM issues as of late.
- quamb, on 11/02/2009, -7/+32Anti-piracy bs has been going on since I was a kid in the 80's.
We've been told piracy is evil and is killing the industry since the advent of the VHS... and then dvd... and now digital-distribution... Whilst the fat cat studio execs continue to rake in the money.
There is some truth in that piracy does hurt any industry. But to be honest I'm sick of being treated like a criminal. Even when you go out to a dvd store, use your own $$dough to purchase a physical dvd, go home and watch it... the ***** dvd plays a 2min anti-piracy message. I mean seriously is that necessary??
On the other hand, those saying "make more quality movies". Perhaps venture outside of hollywood and you'll see plenty of great movies are coming out every other week. - Tbags, on 11/03/2009, -2/+23I pirate movies, stop whining. I don't have money to pull out of my ass to buy ***** I shouldn't be buying.
- mogebier, on 11/03/2009, -0/+21I doubt that anyone on 60 minutes would know how to download a movie anyway. They probably barely know how to use their e-mails.
So they don't understand the technology enough to ask questions about it.
Dinosaur Media. - kmoed, on 11/03/2009, -1/+21Nobody's going to the theaters anymore because of pirates, yet somehow one movie every summer seems to break the box office record from the previous years gone by, Movie Stars are still Movie Stars not starving artists.
Whats the problem???? - enantiodromia, on 11/02/2009, -2/+22yet they still make more money than hollywood. seems they are doing something right.
- screwkevin, on 11/02/2009, -6/+24But outside the Hollywood all they make is black and white hippie movies. They're always about gay cowboys eating pudding.
- nstern2, on 11/02/2009, -2/+20I kinda have to agree with you. I won't buy something until they let me do whatever I want with it. Basically I either pirate it to begin with or I rip the cd/dvd to a better format so I don't have to worry about breaking the disc, or I take the drm out of my digital downloads so when iTunes decides to shut down I can still listen to my media. It's a lose lose, so I figure I might as well just get it for free to begin with.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/03/2009, -1/+18I actually watched that segment when it came on, and the only thing I felt was wrong was that they focused on guys with camcorders more than the guys who leak the videos out of studios - because that's where real piracy starts. I don't know anyone who bothers watching DVD's of shaky, crappy video recordings of movies... everyone I know who's into that finds the real deal in torrents, straight from the studios.
Either the studios do it on purpose in order to generate some kind of viral buzz, or there's someone at the studio who isn't locking things up very well at night. - mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2009, -1/+18once upon a time South Park ruled all.
- bubba9999, on 11/03/2009, -1/+17I watched it, and it was pure industry FUD and *****. It was entirely one-sided.
- kurttrail, on 11/03/2009, -1/+16Actually, depending on the country, downloading films, songs, and the like isn't even illegal. And if you watched the 60 Minutes MPAA piece you'd know that.
And even the uploaders aren't "stealing," they are committing copyright infringement. See, adults who know the law don't have to lie that the theft of physical property is the same as copyright infringement. - MyNameIsGusto, on 11/02/2009, -4/+19Wrong. District 9, Inglorious Basterds, Star Trek, The Hangover, Better off Ted, Bored to Death, etc.
- txballer, on 11/03/2009, -3/+15The porn industry is doing just fine even though their content is HEAVILY pirated and music downloading changed the face of the music industry. Maybe the MPAA should take note.
Edit: Let not forget about the network TV industry. They distribute their content for free and they've survived. - XHashmeerX, on 11/03/2009, -1/+13I think that's purely due to high demand and ever expanding markets. Also, there isn't a big shortage of good quality games. For the most parts, game studios are pretty consistent with their quality, so their games sell by the truckload.

- cosworth99, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1060 Minutes appears to be following CNN into the crapper,.
- christopherokc, on 11/03/2009, -2/+12If you look at total movie revenue over the past 20 years, there was only one major jump. 2002 revenue is $1.3 BILLION higher than 2001. The first release of BitTorrent software was in mid-2001. I don't know if there is a direct correlation, but it seems odd that the year after BitTorrent started, people began spending a *****-ton more money on movies. Not to mention, if you take another look at the movie industry's revenues, they aren't going down. If studies show that people who illegally download music are more likely to buy music, then I'm sure the same could be found of people that illegally download movies.
60 Minutes failed its attempt at investigative journalism with this piece. They didn't present any opposing point of view in the segment. - lolwatermelon, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10"The crappy movies appear to be downloaded more often than the "good" ones"
We pirate the crap that we know won't be worth paying $20 to see. - Langford, on 11/02/2009, -6/+16Don't expect anyone in TV media to say anything about the MPAA's abuse against the public, not if they value their jobs.
- dvsbastard, on 11/03/2009, -1/+10Why is it that I am expected to pay the exact same price for two movies when one looks like a amazing story that I really want to see, and the other looks like crappy half assed popcorn flick that I am going to watch simply because my options are limited? It's bad enough that going to the movies is no longer considered a cheap night out (and I still manage to go to the movies very regularly, despite feeling ripped off most of the time)...
It's like food, some days I feel like a big greasy burger - and other days I feel like some nice fresh seafood... Doesn't mean I'll pay the same for both! And if the food industry tried to charge the same for both, I assure you I would find other means of getting my greasy food fix...
Unfortunately, we don't really have many options... It's either pay more than you think it's worth, don't watch it at all, or download it and watch it without paying - and although the last option is illegal, most people find it hard to be morally obligated to pay for something, when the alternative option is feeling ripped off (or left out)... It doesn't make it right, but that's just how it goes... - howdareyou, on 11/02/2009, -4/+13No where in that article did it mention 60 minutes getting anything wrong. Maybe they did? I didn't see the 60 minutes episode but this submitted article says nothing about 60 minutes spreading MPAA propoganda.
"Sunday on 60 Minutes, members of the film industry and the MPAA were interviewed for a story about movie piracy"
So you can't interview someone without being complicit in spreading their propaganda? Unless it was just an absolutely one-sided piece, which this article doesn't point out. - zinc6471, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8why didn't that girl care about her friend...i think she's dead and no one cares....
btw i'm a dick too... but to be honest i didn't even know that movie was coming out.... - theghostofme, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8*****, that doesn't sound half bad (sans the gay porn and kids).
- thejenigma, on 11/02/2009, -3/+11Amen.
- Engival, on 11/03/2009, -2/+10Oh yeah, it's horrible having to store all these 8gb versions of h264 encoded 1080p movies. You can barely fit 175 of them on a single 1.5tb drive, then you have to run out and spend $100 on another hard disk!
Oh and don't even get me started on how horrible it is to have to search through a list on movies on your media player connected to the TV. Sometimes it's so hard to find stuff, you have to use a 'search' function. I miss the good old days of having a large bookshelf that you can just walk up to and physically scan the shelves looking for something to watch.
It's just so much more convenient to spend $35 a movie for the privilege of having it on blu-ray. Those 8gb rips also never have the 15 minutes of advertising in it too. I really miss that. Watching a 1 1/2 hour movie SHOULD take 2 hours, not 1 1/2 hours! - elmetald00d, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8or how about here where I live, Friday and Saturdays there are no student/military/elderly discounts.....
- BattMatt, on 11/02/2009, -8/+15The easiest way to get the message to the MPAA is to simply stop watching movies. It's not like our lives depend on them, anyway...
- lexman098, on 11/03/2009, -1/+8I think what he's saying is that if he knows he can have any movie for free but still chooses to buy some movies then the ones he buys sure as hell aren't going to be the ***** ones.
And don't say that he's less inclined to buy (the good ones) if he has free access:

http://strangeglue.com/news/survey-says-pirates-sp ... - Yage2006, on 11/03/2009, -6/+13The media spreading propaganda about media piracy.
What a surprise.
/s - BlaculasFro, on 11/03/2009, -1/+8Is that sarcasm or did you seriously just compare piracy to rape?
- FauOz, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7Most of the Pirate copying is done by insiders and not guys sitting in movie theaters with cameras. The quality on streaming videos is just too good.
- c010rb1indusa, on 11/03/2009, -0/+7@zinc
thought the same thing when I saw the movie when every1 was happy at the end, umm what about the parents of the blonde who ODed on heroin that she was forced to take while being ***** by perverts in a whore house. -
