5 Places the U.S. Gov't won't let Google Show You
valleywag.com — So much for indexing all the world's information:
- 2543 diggs
- digg it
- lemcoe9, on 07/17/2008, -180/+1148 diggs and no comments? Fail.
Interesting though. Apparently someone had a little to much time to actually find and compile these.- godfly, on 07/18/2008, -7/+38Your current stats: +3 / -38
You Fail.- badfish0116, on 07/18/2008, -19/+4This thread ***** fails
- housewarmer, on 07/19/2008, -2/+9Perhaps a dumb question, but where do you find those stats? I've searched a bit but not found anything.
- futureb, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10click on where it says "0 diggs", or maybe by the time you're reading this where it says "-150 diggs"
- FonzsXe, on 07/18/2008, -9/+3unseed your ram while the computer is still on please
- inspecality, on 07/19/2008, -1/+4unseat
- j1ggy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+5I highly recommend that you go to a tattoo parlor and have the words EPIC FAIL plastered across your forehead.
- kittnerrules, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17/18/08 12:05 a.m. ET "-155 diggs"

- KonstantinLevin, on 07/17/2008, -41/+18Wait. I think the White House *was* Dick Cheney's house. Or does he just run both?
- Alienkid, on 07/18/2008, -31/+13uh oh, everyone who digged this might get 5th freedom'd
- mesarah, on 07/18/2008, -33/+4Interesting for me
- qwkredfox, on 07/18/2008, -35/+7Interesting for me 2
- salomejones, on 07/18/2008, -39/+9Kind of pathetic that a Valleywag editor doesn't know the difference between "site" and "sight".
- KonstantinLevin, on 07/18/2008, -2/+13These aren't site's they're "sights" as in something you'd see sightseeing. They're views.
- 4321234, on 07/18/2008, -6/+1Hey, so either would be right? (in their own way) Cool.
- rayraym0fucka, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3432, I think a site is a place, and a sight is something you see.
- salomejones, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1You're an idiot, konstantinlevin.
- KonstantinLevin, on 07/18/2008, -2/+13These aren't site's they're "sights" as in something you'd see sightseeing. They're views.
- ctrlfreak13, on 07/18/2008, -8/+423How about the list of 51 places around the world that was on the front page 2 days ago?
http://digg.com/security/Blurred_Out_51_Things_You ...- jordansky, on 07/18/2008, -5/+14Buried as duplicate.
- Mathieugothax, on 07/18/2008, -2/+6And it made it to the front page. Cmon, enough duplicate crap, put original, interesting post on the FP...please? Geez.
- DyceFreak, on 07/18/2008, -4/+9I 2nd that motion... absolute nonsense here...
bury if you respect digg- neFariou5, on 07/18/2008, -0/+21030 (and rising) people apparently don't
- phoomp, on 07/18/2008, -3/+62 different lists. This list highlights the specific items that the US government has blocked.
- DyceFreak, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2yea aparently diggiots would rather have 5 than 51...
- ZachSka87, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Why? Because anything about the U.S. Gov't that implies some kind of evil conspiracy gets Dugg better and faster. Make the government look evil, mention Ron Paul, or seriously inflate a story about a jackass who got hit by a taser and you've got at LEAST 500 diggs in the first 10 minutes...and that's before anyone even reads the article.
- rayraym0fucka, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1I didn't see it two days ago and that's fine with me - I caught it this time around. There's nothing wrong with having a dupe. Unfortunately not all of us have all the time in the world to keep track of what's been frontpaged and what hasn't.
- RadioFreeOpium, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3I didn't catch the other article and I found this one quite entertaining, and apparently others did as well. Some of us don't spend our entire lives on digg you know.
- XxERMxX, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2You people don't seem to understand how digg works... if enough people haven't seen it, you may see it two three ten more times. Bury "dupes" and your restricting people from seeing it resulting in more duplicates.
- SirRealist, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I agree. This was front page a couple days ago. That makes XxERMxX's comment moot. If people aren't reading the front page...then why even come to digg?
- xsecretfiles, on 07/18/2008, -5/+128Is there a way to hide my backyard? I've got some "secrets" buried there.........
- flarn2006, on 07/18/2008, -4/+43Three things:
1. If it's buried, Google Maps won't show it anyway.
2. If Google, being a US company, won't show Bahrain because of something their government said, I guess it's only fair they can blur out your house too if you want them to.
3. I've got something I'm gonna bury too: your comment. (just kidding!)- ryleyleckie, on 07/18/2008, -0/+74Google Grave View will show it.
- orangefly, on 07/18/2008, -1/+37grave view just takes me to a picture of the constitution....
- Icarus25, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I see what you did there...
- ChayD, on 07/18/2008, -2/+8I'm wondering that too, not that I've anything to hide, but would Google honor a private citizen's request that their property not be shown if they can prove right of ownership?
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -5/+8"...not that I've anything to hide, "
define anything.
(still buried for "nothing to hide" fallacy) - cawpin, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Yes, they will. They honor those requests from the street view cameras so I'm sure they would for Maps and Earth as well.
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -5/+8"...not that I've anything to hide, "
- edwartica, on 07/18/2008, -0/+39Just get a tarp with a pixilated pattern printed on it, and spread it all over your lawn. Voila!
- subliminalurge, on 07/18/2008, -0/+10Of course, you might have to leave the tarp there for several years while you wait for the sat to take a new picture. Won't be good for your grass.
- seks03, on 07/18/2008, -0/+16I can get your house blurred out, let me know what your address is.

- thembx, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0hahahaha, i was about to say that slorocks

- ChronicColonic, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Thanks!
- Syugo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+8Wtf is up with one of your neighbor's pool? The other two are nice an light blue...but that one is greenish black.
- ChronicColonic, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6Yeah, I know...it was nasty...it is not like that now. In Arizona you can get fined for letting your pool get like that. It becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes...which in turn ups your risk of getting West Nile.
- ECas123, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Invest in a shovel and a chain saw ;-)
- Scaryclouds, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1I thought her name was Kandy.
- pw378, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Hans?
- flarn2006, on 07/18/2008, -4/+43Three things:
- Andyschism, on 07/18/2008, -15/+2Photoshopped.
- KonstantinLevin, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Nope. Straight up Google embeds.
- Andyschism, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Jokes are lost.
- KonstantinLevin, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Nope. Straight up Google embeds.
- darladoon, on 07/18/2008, -24/+10for a guy (i.e. cheney) who likes to talk 'tough', by threatening and bullying our "enemies," he certainly spends a lot of time hiding from said "enemies."
- screamthenrun, on 07/18/2008, -6/+22DUPE!... like ctrlfreak13 said
there was a far better list on the front page not long ago- KillerStone, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Wouldn't that make your comment a dupe as well?
- screamthenrun, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2YES
- XxERMxX, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Read the article, and you'll see is credits the 51...
- Dylson, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1?
- KillerStone, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Wouldn't that make your comment a dupe as well?
- megamod, on 07/18/2008, -4/+13most of these were included on the 51 places you can't see in google a while back...lame...
- HolyMan28, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1My house is within the fifth one... neat.
- joshuagor44, on 07/18/2008, -5/+94Can't see the Batcave either
- deweyhewson, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4It's somewhere in Ohio, according to this:
http://www.ohiobarns.com/othersites/signs/nc/33-45 ... - highPhone, on 07/18/2008, -11/+12i heard Heath Ledger didn't even show up to the screening of the Dark Knight. What an ass...

- deweyhewson, on 07/18/2008, -1/+4It's somewhere in Ohio, according to this:
- nairbil, on 07/18/2008, -12/+15What about Area 51?
- drunkinbda, on 07/18/2008, -10/+7doesnt exist..
>.> - moxley, on 07/18/2008, -3/+18You can see area 51 - it's just not super detailed.
Look for the long runway with a lot of buildings around it on Groom lake bed in Nevada...I check it out every so often.- 4321234, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11Pixelating would be too crude a coverup for our Alien overlords. They use direct brain control to make you THINK you're not seeing anything. It takes at least 4 layers of tinfoil to defeat this.
- Hangly, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Or one coiled copper wire.
You amateurs with your tinfoil.
- Torpov, on 07/18/2008, -1/+9You can see Groom Lake just fine on Google Earth/Maps.
- JakeLocust, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Yeah Area 51 is on there......My dad was in the Air Force and he used to analyze photographs among other things. He was able to pic out a lot of stuff including which buildings he believed housed more important air craft and which buildings where used more often then others. There is also a half buried building. That run way is the longest on the planet. 2 Space Shuttles could land at the same time from opposite directions.
- calebh, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2There are green circles (they turn grayish-brown when you zoom in) north of area 51 on both google maps and live maps. Anyone know why/what these are?
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=a ...- bbjohnnyt, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3These are alfalfa fields. Food for the alien visitors.
- Observer001, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3I'll hazard a guess from their appearance: they're vast alien gramophone tracts, sort of 70,000 inch wide 45" records for terrifyingly vast player-craft. It's either that or the Zetas are experimenting with biofuels.
- cgbspender, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1The road is called "Farm Road" ... might be a clue ;)
The thin black lines on the circles are devices that turn like watch hands and water the ground. - tcpip4lyfe, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6They are crops irrigated with a center pivot sprinkler.
- leland1, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1They are where the extraterrestrials practice making crop circles. I think they redo them everyday before dawn. :-)
I didn't realize that KFC's 87,000 sq. ft. logo of Col. Harland Sanders was in nearby Tempiute, Nevada (the small town north of Area 51, off of the Extraterrestrial Hwy. 375) was so close to Area 51. It was part of KFC's redesign of their logo in 2006, and can be seen from space. Anyone for fried chicken?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,229308,00.html
- celkin, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2What about Area 51-A?
- 4d669, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1How about the crop circles? Are they in?
- drunkinbda, on 07/18/2008, -10/+7doesnt exist..
- santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -18/+120I know everyone is anti-US government around here, but I don't mind if Google doesn't show certain things, if it prevents terrorists from using these maps for planning things. Now, I'm prepared to be called a right wing nutjob.
- PosedMagnet, on 07/18/2008, -34/+7Considering you're babbling about terrorists, I'd say you are a nutjob, yes.
Are you seriously still buying into the terrorist boogeymen story? It's 2008, 7 years since 9/11. Get over it.- PullingTeeth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+40Fact: 9/11 was not the only terrorist attack, ever.
- santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -1/+26So all 19 terrorists who ate America were killed on 9/11? No major attacks since then, but you must be an idiot to assume they don't still hate us.
- dinot, on 07/18/2008, -0/+9I'd like to quote YOU in a comment posted about Huffington Post's secret office location thingy:
"Well it's not so ***** secret now, is it? Seriously, why would you admit to having a hidden office behind a bookshelf? Now people know what to look for." http://digg.com/people/Huffington_Post_Founder_s_H ...
You must be one of those "everything the government does is bad and i'm such a rebel and *****" Ron Paul types. And it's nice to see you getting logic-pwned by the two comments above due to your inability to think for yourself and beyond the whole 'government sucks' mentality. - flyingwolf, on 07/18/2008, -4/+0Actually it's been shown time and tie again that out of those 19 people who were supposedly on the plane, 5 were in fact in other places.
Some weren't anywhere near the planes and in fact some were in the US studying when they see their own picture on the TV labeling them a terrorist.
Now I am not a conspiracy nut by far, but I can tell you from my time in the military that everything that is known is not always told. - PosedMagnet, on 07/18/2008, -9/+4Digg stalker, yikes.
Re: bookshelf, if someone broke into your house, *****. What does that have to do with terrorists?
Since apparently no one can see beyond black and white, there is no immediate terrorist threat to the USA. Well, certainly none that would require MAPS to be incomplete. Now, unless you all dozed off in history class, there's a little something called "propaganda".
Since 9/11 it's been "Terrorist this, terrorist that". You were never concerned about terrorists before when they hit in 1993, or when the Oklahoma City bombing happened. Why? Propaganda. Now unless you're bullheaded, I'm pretty sure you're smart enough to realize that correlation.
Based on all your guys' logic, it should be fine to wiretap "because of the terrorists".
Give me a break. There's no ***** immediate looming threat that was never there before. Removing maps, increasing security, wiretapping, treating citizens as potential threats, none of that will protect you even if there WERE another attack. - crazy0, on 07/18/2008, -4/+0hey magnet your counting on all these scared sheeples to have any back bone and common senses...which is clearly lacking in the mass culture....i feel ya man
- dinot, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1@crazy0
I'm sorry, but I didn't realize that being reasonably cautious = scared sheeple. If you're so confident that there's no threat to our lives, why don't you post your real name, home address, and your bank account number? Since you have a backbone and all that. - crazy0, on 07/18/2008, -3/+0oooooooooooooooooh you sure showed me dinuts ....ur mistaking made up terrorism with actual real world common sense.... im more in danger from walkin in the wrong hood than these made up terrorists...now go back to watching your tube you timid lil lemming
- dinot, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1crazy0. You fail.
- crazy0, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0^ look at him he wrote a two sentence response, your cool.
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -14/+20How though? How does it stop terrorists?
They never tell us how, they just say it will.
Not good enough anymore, IMO.- dinot, on 07/18/2008, -5/+9It's the same thing as wearing a helmet while riding a motorbike. It won't stop you from dying in a horrible accident, but it MIGHT.
It's called taking precaution. - santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -2/+11The government doesn't tell us everything. Never have, never will. It doesn't "stop terrorists", but surely you can see how preventing them from seeing certain places could be a hindrance. It may not be good enough for you and me, but sadly, there's nothing we can do about it.
I assume, at the risk of getting dugg down to the depths of hell, that the US government is full of good intentions. There is obviously corrpution, probably at all levels. Also, there is just incompetency everywhere. However, people here treat the government as some evil entity, constantly seeking to make themselves richer by holding us, the little people, down. Most of their failures can be attributed to gross negligence. - flyingwolf, on 07/18/2008, -4/+3Actually wearing a helmet has been proven to save your life in the event of an accident. To the point that many times you would have had a fatal injury but thanks to the helmet can walk away.
But no amount of taking off my smelly boots is going to keep anyone safe... - ubrikkean, on 07/18/2008, -3/+1On the other end of the spectrum, how would you benefit by seeing these places on Google? It doesn't really make a practical difference for most people, so we might as well take the precaution, like dinot said.
- dinot, on 07/18/2008, -5/+9It's the same thing as wearing a helmet while riding a motorbike. It won't stop you from dying in a horrible accident, but it MIGHT.
- tufftugg, on 07/18/2008, -12/+4How about a right wing fascist?
- santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Moron, you are such a far left wacko , it's easy for you to label me a right wing fascist. Like you have any ***** idea what that means. Stop assuming the government is out to get you all the time.
- EricSchC1, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Both of you act like children, w/your incessant name-calling...way to go, taking any legitimacy out of your own arguments. I can handle the differences of political opinions, but I swear, the constant usage of phrases like "libtards", "right wing fascists", etc. is sickening...what ever happened to lets defend whatever's best for the American people or the planet at large, even, regardless of political differences...
It would seem like you guys would rather "settle this on the playground, after school", than consider the real consequences of your opinions and perceptions.
- dpinkston, on 07/18/2008, -10/+5Cause I am sure there are no other easy ways for terrorist to get this information...
/sarcasm- avrygoodfrnd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1dunno why you've been dugg down, you've got a point... the terrorists are really going to use google earth to plan their attacks -_-
they probably don't even have access to google earth...
- avrygoodfrnd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1dunno why you've been dugg down, you've got a point... the terrorists are really going to use google earth to plan their attacks -_-
- phoomp, on 07/18/2008, -6/+15That's fine, until they start to massage the definition of "terrorist" to include people we just disagree with.
- EarlOfLade, on 07/18/2008, -9/+4I absolutely amazed at how someone think censorship will do anything. Do you seriously think that blurring and obscuring these objects on Google maps will have any effect on anything? If so, why and how?
- santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3Fine, let's take your logic a little farther. Why not publish blueprints of the White House? It's 100% paid for by taxpayers, and the President, an employee of the government, lives and works there. They give tours there, so why not show us 100% of the layout of the building?
You and I both know there are reasons for not disclosing everything. I took your logic a couple steps beyond you, but the principle is the same. - avrygoodfrnd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1santaliqueur: you take things too literally... honestly, do you think google earth is the only map in the world?
- santaliqueur, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3Fine, let's take your logic a little farther. Why not publish blueprints of the White House? It's 100% paid for by taxpayers, and the President, an employee of the government, lives and works there. They give tours there, so why not show us 100% of the layout of the building?
- flyingwolf, on 07/18/2008, -5/+8Well remember, the Patriot act declares "hackers and crackers" terrorists. So therefore if you use a crack for photoshop you to can be a resident of gitmo.
- fpaudon, on 07/18/2008, -3/+3Well I live 5 minutes from Lincoln Labs, so I wouldn't really want someone to launch an attack there that they planned on Google Earth.
On the other hand, if I took pictures of the facility, does that make me a terrorist?- mrgermy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Take some, post them on Flickr and let us know what it looks like.
Then let us know if anyone shows up at your door.
- mrgermy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Take some, post them on Flickr and let us know what it looks like.
- MrNeom, on 07/18/2008, -2/+16New terrorist plan, bomb the blurry spots, they must be important.
Governments policy on you: "We're gonna wire tap you and you shouldn't care as long as you have nothing to hide."
Government policy on self: "GTFO of my business." - Frost9999, on 07/18/2008, -3/+13Terrorism isn't even a problem in the USA. How many people have died in the last 10 years from terrorist attacks compared with heart disease? Look it up... they should be blurring out fast food retaurants if they want to save lives.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Those people are willingly going to those places, eating crap, and not excersising.
It is no secret that the US has some rather poor eating habits and an obesity problem.
The difference is they are CHOOSING to go to these places, they aren't forced to eat at McDonalds or Burger King or Wendeys or whatever. - apollomurga, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2sigh. people who are killed by terrorists don't get to choose whether they live or die. they can choose to be a fat ass glutton and eat fast food which is bad for them.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Those people are willingly going to those places, eating crap, and not excersising.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Wow, statements defending Google's blocking of sensative areas and for the government are being dugg up while people who claim those who support Google/the government over this are paranoid nutjobs are bding dugg down.
What is this, bizarro-Digg? - gullevek, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2yeah, but do you really think this is the _only_ place you can get maps?
- PosedMagnet, on 07/18/2008, -34/+7Considering you're babbling about terrorists, I'd say you are a nutjob, yes.
- darladoon, on 07/18/2008, -12/+2if cheney has done nothing wrong, then why is always hiding?
- ryleyleckie, on 07/18/2008, -16/+5US gov is so paranoid and stupid.
- drunkinbda, on 07/18/2008, -3/+20are you that offended that you cant see 5 things on google? is it screwing up your science project?
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -8/+3More than 5 things actually... and yes, I'd rather be free to view google earth without govt. interference, thank you.
- strictnein, on 07/19/2008, -2/+2I'd like to view your bedroom at night without government interference as well. And your mom's.
Oh, so you're saying there might be some limits to this time of thing? - Travelsonic, on 07/19/2008, -1/+2Except that CLEARLY is a violation of another's rights.
Try again.
- strictnein, on 07/18/2008, -2/+4You're acting like they're blocking every military base, power station, government building, and toothpaste factory.
- ryleyleckie, on 07/18/2008, -3/+2yeah, i'm acting like that..? i actually don't care, don't even use google to look at the US as i'm not a citizen. was just saying that your government's paranoia is hilarious.
- drunkinbda, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1there is a point where security does not equal paranoia. What do you say to people that lock their doors at night? Secure? safe? or paranoid?
Some things a country just does not want people to see. I think people that are concerned about these few things are just nit picking for the sake of it.
- dorkino, on 07/18/2008, -3/+1I think you mean the US citizens.
- drunkinbda, on 07/18/2008, -3/+20are you that offended that you cant see 5 things on google? is it screwing up your science project?
- intelno001, on 07/18/2008, -1/+43Only 4 of those are in the US, there's no evidence that the US government requires them to be blurred, and the title misspells 'site'
This is what I call 'crap'- PabloMac, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3It's a site for sore eyes.
- prophetpimp, on 07/18/2008, -7/+3Its not crap. Google has actively been proactive with government to get stuff that shouldn't been that easy to access, to be removed or blurred. They have an Agreement with India where by the zoom resolution over certain Indian installation will be limited. And i agree with this policy not because i like censorship but because i know terrorist will use this information.
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -2/+6"i know terrorist will use this information."
Terrorists will use public information and actual maps, should we stop making 'em too? - nbulp, on 07/18/2008, -3/+2Ooh... truthiness!
- prophetpimp, on 07/18/2008, -4/+4I am not an American, I am Indian and i live in Bombay. We have been hit by so many freaking terrorist attack you Americans can even begin to imagine. Yes terrorist can use this information. For example the Indian Parliament Attacks. Its not as far fetched as it seems. Maybe in America it might be but in place as exposed as India, its not.
- Ghjnut, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2You just completely ignored what he said. The fact is, with the vast expanse of the internet out there, blurring one image on google maps is just a minor deterrent. I can guaranty you that someone who is going to do something as extreme as plot a terrorist attack is going to have no trouble finding the resources they need.
- Travelsonic, on 07/18/2008, -2/+6"i know terrorist will use this information."
- PosedMagnet, on 07/18/2008, -8/+21LOL @ rooftop defense system on the White House.
What, are we in some sci-fi movie now?
Ever think that maybe it wasn't erased and that it's just not there?
Some of these just don't make sense. Naval Observatory is Dick Cheney's house? or the MIT Lincoln Laboratory on a completely zoomed out map of the eastern part of the country... what?- Typhoon2009, on 07/18/2008, -0/+151) I'm pretty sure that the White House has Secret Service or FBI snipers on the roof of the White House. I've seen people walking around on top and they looked like they meant business.
2) Dick Cheney's house is on the same complex as the Naval Observatory.
3) I agree, wtf is with the MIT one?- Ilyanep, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2Zoom in on the pinpoint that says "A". It'll be blurred out.
- macphan, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2I live no less then 10 miles away from Lincoln Labs. They do serous testing and research for the US Department of defense.
- strictnein, on 07/18/2008, -0/+13The White House has a very advanced defense system. I'm sorry if you were unaware of this.
- vexingmodstwo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+8Never been to DC, huh?
- adriandb, on 07/18/2008, -0/+9Typhoon2009 has it correct. I live in the DC area and can confirm that there are both dudes with guns and a defense system on the roof of the white house. It's also well known that the Naval Observatory is where Cheney spends a lot of time and it is where he was when he was in "an undisclosed location" following 9/11
- 4321234, on 07/18/2008, -3/+4Here's hoping Cheney will get to spend plenty of time in the future in a secured federal facility.

- robotfuel, on 07/18/2008, -14/+6Sometimes I sit and wonder what is truly going on in this world. The military is always the first to have the latest in technological advancements and with Google Earth out for free I can only imagine what they have under wraps. With the current push towards globalization - an ideal that's been a main goal for the super, super rich for some time now (google Rockefeller quotes, Memoirs) and our general denial, compliance and apathy towards it I can only hope that one day mankind can no longer sustain itself and topples under its inability to co-exist peacefully.
Peace...ha. What an inane and ridiculous thing to want, right? What a stupid and preposterous notion to want to live in a world where the accumulation of wealth and capital isn't the main goal and our lives aren't subtlety (and not so subtlety) controlled by those with the most toys and toy soldiers.
I guess that's not really related to the topic but I haven't slept much in the past 24 hours and that always kicks me into existential mode.
Anyway, frosted butts.- EricSchC1, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3wow...I can't believe that...at least 7 people (at the time of my commenting) don't think we should be about peace and prosperity, but rather war and global dominance. Sad...

- RSterkenburg, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2The satellites that do geolocation for handheld GPSes, cars, and sometimes even phones are old satellites that the US millitary has rendered so obselete with new ones that they just let anyone use them... and they're accurate to a couple meters. I'm sure you can imagine what the accuracy of their new technology is.

I guess they upgraded to an air defenseless system...- sentinel106, on 07/18/2008, -1/+6wasn't that in the '70s though?

- dorkino, on 07/18/2008, -6/+5White House rooftop defense system erased? LOL right...
- jeffvvisoft, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Yeah... doubtful that would of come in handy on 9-11.

- aaabatteries, on 07/18/2008, -6/+3They forgot to include /b/.
Seriously--Google doesn't list it.- linuxpenguin, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2Dumbass - it doesn't know what the hell to do with the forward slashes.
And seriously - do you think a computer can make sense of /b/ and figure out what the hell it's related to to assign it a rank? It's just a bunch of random *****, lolcats, and porn from what I understand.- aaabatteries, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2No, I'm right.
Proof:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=4chan+random& ...
http://www.chillingeffects.org/notice.cgi?sID=1161
Please refrain from calling someone a "dumbass" unless you have a substantial argument poised against them.
I'm not sure how the ranking process works, but popularity/hit count of a site seems to take a big part. Therefore, doing a search for "4chan random" should bring you to the actual site--should it not?
In addition, if you do a search for "/a/ 4chan" the first hit is 4chan's anime board.
Your counterargument is hereby false. - linuxpenguin, on 07/19/2008, -2/+1@aaabatteries: You're still a dumbass, dumbass. A search for "4chan" brings up 4chan.
http://www.google.com/search?q=4chan
4chan isn't blocked. Your particular search is just a peculiarity because people talk and bitch more about 4chan more than they actually link to 4chan (which is opposite what is expected for most sites). - aaabatteries, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2My point was that the random board was blocked.
4chan's main page, and all other boards are unblocked.
- aaabatteries, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2No, I'm right.
- linuxpenguin, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2Dumbass - it doesn't know what the hell to do with the forward slashes.
- reeftool, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1This is funny. Driving into Schenectady on Rt. 146 there is a huge road sign and left turn arrow for Knolls.
- starbuck5250, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0Yeah, the so-called 'Knolls' photo is actually the General Electric Main Plant location at the end of Erie Blvd.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/18/2008, -11/+3Either map everything or nothing.
- lynx44, on 07/18/2008, -2/+7You're right. Google maps is only useful if I can see every location in the world. I can't count the amount of times that those censored places have made a potentially useful service useless for me.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/18/2008, -3/+2Don't avoid the point, you point avoider
- linuxpenguin, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1Yes - this is Google Maps, and therefore Google is the one who took all the pictures and collected all the data for the maps. Not the company named at the bottom of the screen where it says "Map data (c) 2008". That would just make too much sense.
Actually, the data/photographs are all mapped. Just not on the map you're looking at. If you were someone who should know what those areas looked like, you could see them.
Google Maps is no less useful without this data - what do you care? If there's a nuclear silo on the roof of the White House, that doesn't really affect you at all does it? Or is this now suddenly a concern even though for hundreds of years, almost no one knew what the ***** the roof of the White House looked like and it didn't really matter? - aelias, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1They did map the world. That ***** is there, clearly. You just aren't allowed to look at it as clearly as you'd like.
Keep your expectations low, or have none.
- lynx44, on 07/18/2008, -2/+7You're right. Google maps is only useful if I can see every location in the world. I can't count the amount of times that those censored places have made a potentially useful service useless for me.
- poorbusker, on 07/18/2008, -4/+7these all seem pretty reasonable to me
- davidrools, on 07/18/2008, -5/+2Inaccurate. I looked at Bahrain to see the track layout during last years F1 GP there. It's still there now. Whatever.
- chaos386, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Why the hell is he getting dugg down? Bahrain is quite visible on Google Maps, and it's not blocked in Bahrain, either. I just checked with a friend of mine who lives there (I'm in Saudi Arabia, btw).
- WhoDoneIt, on 07/18/2008, -0/+46I think they've blocked Santa Claus's house too. I've spent hours looking at the north pole and haven't seen and signs of it or reindeer tracks.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 07/18/2008, -7/+4There is no "advanced air defense system" at the White House. The Secret Service has a few shoulder launched Stinger missile systems as a last line of defense. That's about it.

- diggydougie, on 07/18/2008, -2/+2Where did the government get the authority? Or did they just ask google and google said "OK"? If Google wasn't forced to then it is their prerogative. Just like the telecoms companies with the wiretapping. But the question is, were they ordered, or asked?
