- Charun, on 12/25/2008, -1/+33At some point I think most of them are people's cats.
- TPSwill, on 12/24/2008, -0/+24That is WAY too many accounts. :o

- facelesscoward, on 12/25/2008, -4/+17I made a Twitter account to see what the hype was about. I didn't get it. I haven't logged in since.

- douce2, on 12/25/2008, -0/+7I contributed to that study, somewhere in one of those days was my one account...which I never used
- cyclopssmiley, on 12/25/2008, -4/+11Digg, hating on twitter for no apparent reason.
- BullHunter, on 12/24/2008, -1/+8That is just Nuts! Twitter will be a takeover target very soon
- Jeffnfun631, on 12/25/2008, -0/+6I love Twitter. I use it as a Social Circle and also as an RSS reader. I read yahoo news on twitter through a tweet Box
- LukeBeaumont, on 12/24/2008, -1/+7It already is...
- sherm420, on 12/25/2008, -0/+6you know i dont do facebook because it is WAYYY to personal for my taste. call me old school but i grew up KNOWING the internet IS insecure. and if there is something nefarious to be done using the "social network", it will be done. but hey, i will search facebook for all of my potential interns.

- moredown, on 12/25/2008, -0/+5you know everyone is going to block you now, right?
- waxenpi, on 12/25/2008, -0/+5too many social networks... i know competition is good but do i really need to stay in touch with friends through 5 different websites? i think facebook is the best because generally you know who you're dealing with...
- veled, on 12/25/2008, -0/+5Twitter - A 'micro'blogging medium, for all that implies. If you find blogging in general useful, you'll likely find twitter useful too.
I use twitter as a unifying status feed for LJ, Blogger, Facebook, etc. I also use certain other features, like Twittersearch, to give my Squidoo pages an interactive feature.
The main draw, besides Twitter itself, is that you can automate various tasks using Twitter + a plugin / third party app of some kind. For example, I have one service that picks up on certain del.icio.us links that I tag for twitter distribution, allowing me to make both twitter and del.icio.us more useful to me. Another one I use is TweetLater, which is good for remembering holidays, birthdays + other important dates (Your wife can't say you forgot your anniversary if you set the tweet up for it in advance!), and in my case, advertising for special events like conventions I'm working at without having to remember to post the day of (as well as allowing me to space out tweets about an event leading up to said event) so I can decide what I say in advance and avoid that spammy feeling by getting it all out of my system at once and relaxing the rest of the time.
As far as listening to other folks go, I've also found out about special events and other conventions like BarCamp through twitter, so it's helped broaden my horizons and be useful in other ways too. And it's kept me in touch with family, which is another plus.
Finally, I love the "post from phone" feature, as it's allowed me to stay connected during conventions and other events where I can't bring my laptop for one reason or another. Yes, it may be a little "too" much for some folks, but when you're already waiting at the #$%@'in bus stop or standing in line someplace or another situation where you're not doing anything anyway, a tweet is better than nothing. - MrChunks, on 12/25/2008, -0/+4I recommend you visit this link then -> http://twitter.com/account/delete

pain in the ass finding ppl u know with the absentee of networks - MrChunks, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3You create tweets which can be up to 140 characters and are mostly descriptions of the kind of ***** you've just had. Emphasis on consistency and colour, please.
- douglasr007, on 12/25/2008, -1/+4That's 5,000-10,000 accounts too much

Ur friends/acquaintances inform u of parties/events, share interesting/funny links and things on the Internet.
I could go on and on and on ... it's interesting how the younger generation fight and hate on Twitter thinking its stupid and that Facebook is all they need. You all are missing out! - omarqaz7, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3Not surprising. Why did they have to do a study though? Couldn't they have just asked?
- jayll, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3Same.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3It's as good as the people you follow. I have mine set as a nice pseudo-irc channel that's on throughout the day, but with input from a lot of authors I like who toss in the occasional idea they're musing about for their books.
- hurricanewane, on 12/25/2008, -0/+390% of the rest are people that never use it.
- 2of8, on 12/25/2008, -2/+5Really? Here are sample entries from your twitter page:

Are you that ***** self-centered to think that somebody gives a flying ***** about what kind of tea you had in the morning, and that you're working during work hours? - mtownand1, on 12/25/2008, -0/+3This: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/4/23/
- Bombfrog, on 12/25/2008, -0/+2I'll give 10 internet points to anyone that can tell me what the point of Twitter actually is.
- jo42, on 12/25/2008, -4/+6They should have called it Twatter.
- m1zl3d, on 12/25/2008, -1/+3You know I don't care right?

- nmlyons24, on 12/25/2008, -1/+3Yea, I signed up to see what all the commotion was. It told me to tell it what I was doing...seriously. Other than journalists, this is total garbage.
Wish I would have thought of it first! - majikphat, on 12/25/2008, -0/+2Eatin lunch at The Rancho w/ @dakotamartin.
- Bangaarang, on 12/25/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't be surprised if that 20% growth was spam bots creating random accounts.
- gpickett00, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1I registered. I don't know why I would choose twitter over any social netword
- twon, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1I dont know the Twitter hate.
I log into facebook, look at status updates, and logout.
I log into myspace, look at staus updates, and logout.
They're all I really care about. Now I can avoid the ugly mess that is those sites. - rhedrick, on 12/25/2008, -2/+3http://www.BrightKite.com is an interesting alternative to Twitter, allowing pictures as well as 'micro-blogging' - plus much more.
I work for neither Twitter, nor BrightKite. - xino, on 12/26/2008, -0/+1You're right as far as the majority of the activity on twitter, but you can follow just people you know on Facebook on twitter. If you don't use a cell phone to receive tweets and everyone you care about getting info from is on Facebook, I can see how twitter would be redundant for you. Part of the "holy grail" for you as well as others would be if the twitter technology would be implemented in facebook and in other people's favorite social networking site so that you could just use those services with your phone. The best part about that would be that people in those communities can have active participants on even the most basic cell phones.
Another "holy grail" that will be great will be stuff like Laconica which is an open microblogging standard. It's like twitter, but it's free and open source software that anyone can use to run their own twitter like service and if it gets adopted by twitter and the other social networking sites, twitter accounts would be able to send messages to plurk and facebook and Myspace accounts.
Listen to FLOSS episode 37 which is an interview with Evan Prodromou who is working on this project right now. www.twit.tv/floss37 This show interviews all different people in the open source community.
http://identi.ca/ Here's one website using Laconica.
http://laconi.ca/ Here's the main site for the Laconica software itself. - motters, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1How many Twitter accounts are abandoned per day though?
- xino, on 12/26/2008, -0/+1The power went out the other day and I tweeted it. Facebook on my phone isn't a good option, but twitter is.
- inactive, on 12/25/2008, -1/+210,000 accounts / 3,000 people = true amount of new users
- sherm420, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1The average attention span of the populace will be inversely proportional to the amount of twitter users.
- jfreeman, on 12/26/2008, -0/+1You can't send text messages to facebook from your phone.
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -0/+1Forgive me, but I dont see the purpose of twitter.
