- ajz8182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dont necessarily agree with the order, but PCworld put together a great list; a great read that made me think about my top list. I personally believe the tranistor radio was the watershed moment for "gadgets".
BTW, take a look at the Motorola StarTAC (1996). Wow. What a pioneer is cell phone design; I cant believe 1996 is almost 10 years ago...*sigh*.
DIGG, for sure. cheers! - Pizpump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The ipod is #2?
Give me an effing break. Long live the bandwagon!! - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Sorry to bitch, but why no NES? Really, you have PS2 and Gameboy, but not the granddaddy of the all?"
Must be in your 20s. ;^)
The grandaddy of all these is the Atari 2600. And it was a cultural phenomenon in a way that no other system has quite equalled to this day... at least, not without a few million in marketing and advertising money behind them. - stark23x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pong. Without Pong, no Atari. No NES consoles. No Dreamcast, Playstation, Xbox, etc.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Walkman, iPod, TiVo, Palm Pilot, StarTac, PS2, Speak & Spell (old school baby!), Game Boy, Intellimouse, Zip Drive, and Simon. I'm not that old, so it really surprises me that it seems the majority of these things were really the best gadgets of only the past 30 years or so...
IMO a list entitled "The 50 Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years" should consist of generic things like the television remote control, satellite dish reciever, flat-panel monitor, pacemaker, personal GPS device, the barcode scanner and RFID, and such. And how does the roomba make the list but the Ionic Breeze get shafted? With so many stupid info-mercials you would think the things would be selling like hotcakes... - Abyss_908, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have 5 of them. The walkman and others were before my time. Sucks that the NES wasn't on there.
- 8ight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'd have to nominate an xbox and an nes
- navster15, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry to bitch, but why no NES? Really, you have PS2 and Gameboy, but not the granddaddy of the all? Pssh...
- dhughes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Walkman, Palm Pilot (Professional though), Star Tack, Treo 600, Zip Drive, Simon, QuickCam, I had a CD player in 1985-1986, almost had a Rio MP3 player :(
If I had the money I would have had more! Cool things = expensive & usually break (first model). - Zane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NES was much more important in gaming than the Atari 2600, and so was the Magnavox Odyssey.
- kitejumping, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This list sort of sucks, there are like 20 different palm pilots and they forgot the basics. Like a digital watch, and PC lol. Not to mention a microwave? or printer for that matter... How about the television... Yet another crappy list... They get a break though for forgetting the PC since its hosted on pcworld.com
- metacoola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damnit......isn't the point of of top 50 list to show the top one last....
- foovo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Texas Instruments SR-10. Surely the HP-35 was THE electronic slide rule.
- sporkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it sucks they start with number one, it looses the suspense
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, I've owned only 2....
- soniciguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've Owned 11
- NidStyles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had 5 of those. I see they left a lot of the better things off.
- zengame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder why the "Nintendo Family Computer a.k.a Famicon" has not listed.
- Tomunist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Most of this stuff is either before my time or beyond the bounds of my wallet--I've only owned one.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Texas Instruments SR-10 deserves to be number one, as it completly changed the way math is taught and looked at, and considering math is the core of everything scientific, I'd say that's pretty important. It may not be the coolest gadget, but it's the most important for sure. Handheld calculator FTW.
- alceria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm tickled that the SX-70 was #8 on the list. Too bad they neglected to mention its coolest feature which explains its cult status today.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh and the original sony camcorder was more important than the first digital camcorder.
And the Sony Mavica MVC-FD5, nobody cared about these, let's be honest, they never caught on because they were useless. - JordanAustin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Apparently, one of the best gadgets of all time, the PC isn't one of the top 50.
- dtm1017, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i know someone who still uses a star tac
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+012. the razr.
okay, does anyone else feel that the razr has way too much hype.
i can't stand motorola software. - yesukai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im still using the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer (#32). Like right now. The first one I ever got.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"NES was much more important in gaming than the Atari 2600, and so was the Magnavox Odyssey."
Please tell me that's a joke. - F20Z3N, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is a lame list how cant they put the NES and The xbox or halo 2 for a online game.
- tdempsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had (or have) quite a few of these items including the (same exact) Hamilton watch in the 70s. I guess that kinda dates me - doesn't it!
Nice memory trip. - Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0speak and spell should be higher!! :D
- DennisLG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have about 11 of these, agree Razr hardware is cool, software sucks. Still have Franklin Rolodex Electronics REX (and still use it). Also still have NEC 40 character LCD , load form cassette tape laptop that runs on AA ( no longer use it).
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I've only owned 3. Course, I'm a youngin' and some of those products I own newer versions of. In fact, there's a lot like that. :P
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol cant believe the Franklin Rolodex Electronics REX PC Companion is even remember, my parents my little bro and me all had one lol purely useless device
- Zivko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The PS2 shouldn't be on that list. Period. It's an awful console (Not to start a Console War here, I own a PS2, but don't own a GCN or XBox), so many games are just pure crap.
If anything, the PSP should replace the PS2 on that list, the PSP is more then a gaming console, it IS a gadget.
I agree with most comments about the older consoles, No NES, no SNES, not even a Genesis! (....Or a Dreamcast.) - CJHtxGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was diggin the list until I saw Iomega with zips,,, abomination of man, digg for everything else...
- TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I forgot to add that the GameBoy should have been #2. Bring the first great handheld games, and led the path for future handheld gaming.
- TheDarkTipper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, I agree. The PS2 completely failed to live up to its expectations with the "Emotion Engine."
- RichCoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally. A top-n list that I agree with. Dizug Bezitch.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"this is a lame list how cant they put the NES and The xbox or halo 2 for a online game."
LOL Halo 2 for online gaming? Halo 2 came out in 2004, PC's had online gaming 10 YEARS before Halo 2. And oh yeah, Halo 2 sucked. - soapycub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I personally have owned or still have 8 of the items .. but items that have been in our family, there are 27. :)
- matt.rubin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THE IPOD OVER THE RIO WTF?!?! Rio ia the people who invented the mp3 player. i bought the second one that came out (rio 500). Then again apple does what they always do (cough xerox GUI cough konfabulator cough) and stole the idea and dominated the market from their stolen idea. This is messed up. How can the entire world be so concentrated on a stupid iPod where the technology in them is already a good 4 years old. They even do a crappy job doing it not having any advance functions on it like bluetooth or wifi. (archos.com) ***** apple.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0jet another unfriendly navigation "top"-something site
- aheram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Commodore 64 is on there, but not the first Mac...?
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't realize that time began 50 years ago.
My ancestry is a lie! - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 I do not think they said anything about the dvd player. Also matt.rubin, I dont think the rio should have even been on the list. Yes it was the first Mp3 player, but to get mad because Apple had copied it and is now the best selling mp3 player is silly. By your logic no company should ever dupilcat another companies idea. Therefore there should only be one PC company, 1 video game system, and 1 brand of TV. If it were not for companies seeing what another company has and trying to improve in there would be no real advances in any new technology
- nickzee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple // has to be the top pc up there because of the influence is had on programmers and it invented a whole new market
this list is crap... Motorola razor is unusable....they placed the Atari in the top ten and forgot that the system is barely a blimp in pop culture and the NES became known world wide because of its great standard for games (nintendo seal) ... Might as well put all of sony's ***** products up their - FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the most significant paradigm shifts in the history of technology, the switch from film to DIGITAL CAMERA's, isn't represented!?
- fredgarvin1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No PC?
Umm... #25 Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100 (1983)
You kids need to study your geek history a little better. - jervana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sucky list.
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0only 6 of them
